Abstract
A portable support is shaped to straddle window cills and provides an outer projecting hook 13 to ensure that a pliable metal ladder hangs clear of the external wall for a safe foothold and provides an inner arm 12 with a hooked end 11 that extends to the wall anchor 10 which is fixed to sound masonry by forming a hole and packing steel wool 14 firmly around the threads and set projecting from the wall face 15 to enable the portable support to link-in- seconds 11. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Portable Support for Fire Escape Pliable Ladder in
Conjunction with a Fixed Wall Anchor
This invention relates to a portable support for fire escape pliable ladder in conjunction with a fixed wall anchor.
Fire escape permanent metal ladders fixed to the masonry of two or three storey domestic dwellings are rarely installed by reasons of cost, appearance and security.
According to the present invention, there is provided a portable support of solid steel that is designed for any metal or wood window with an open portion at cill level and to provide the necessary projection so that a pliable metal ladder hangs clear of the external wall for a safe foothold and to link-in-seconds internally to the steel wall anchor.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows the steel wall anchor fixed to the inner skin of cavity wall;
Figure 2 shows the portable steel support in position over the window cills and linked to the steel wall anchor.
Referring to Figure 2, the portable support comprises a 12 mm diameter mild steel bar to BS 970 that is shaped by hot bending on a purpose made jig and which straddles the window cills.
The outer hook 13 projects beyond the face of outside cill to ensure that a pliable metal ladder (adapted and fitted with a steel delta link-inseconds) hangs clear of the external wall for a safe foothold.
The inner hook 11 is shaped to link-in-seconds with the hooked wall anchor 10.
The inner arm 12 of the portable support is shaped to fit against the internal wall and extend to the wall anchor 10 which is sited in masonry under compression through the roof structure. The inner arm 12 may be bent to suit left-hand or right-hand opening portion of the window.
Referring to Figure 1, the wall anchor 10 comprises a 10 mm diameter threaded mild steel bar to BS 970 that is shaped by hot bending and which is treated against corrosion and designed for fixing to the masonry internally by forming a circular hole and packing coarse steel wool 14 firmly around the threads.
The wall anchor 10 must project from the internal wall face to form a gap 15 and be set as shown (in
Figure 2) to enable the portable support to link-inseconds 11.
Note: The position of the circular hole is found by
placing the portable support astride the cills
of window opening with a gap of 50 mm-75 mm between the external side of opening and
portable support resting on the outer cill and
with the inner arm 12 against the internal wall
which fixes the position in sound masonry.
1. A portable support comprising a 12 mm diameter mild steel bar to BS 970 that is shaped by hot bending on a purpose made jig and which straddles the cills of any metal or wood window with an open portion at cill level and provides an outer hook that projects beyond the face of outside cill to ensure that a pliable metal ladder hangs clear of the external wall for a safe foothold and provides an inner arm that is shaped to fit against the internal wall and extend to the wall anchor fixed in sound masonry and which links-in-seconds to the wall anchor by a hooked end.
2. A wall anchor comprising a 10 mm diameter threaded mild steel bar to BS 970 that is shaped by hot bending and after treatment against corrosion is fixed to the masonry internally by forming a circular hole and packing coarse steel wool firmly around the threads and set projecting from the wall face to form a gap to enable the portable support to link-in-seconds.
3. A portable support as claimed in Claim 1 and a wall anchor as claimed in Claim 2 have been tested to support a moving load of 21 stones.
Amendments to the claims have been filed, and have the following effect: Claims 2 and 3 above have been deleted.
