Description

SPECIFICATION Support means This invention relates to hooks or brackets which may be used for supporting ropes, rope ladders or other means by which heights may be ascended or descended.
According to the present invention there is provided a device for supporting means by which heights may be descended, the device comprising a rigid member shaped to locate over a portion of a windowsill or like structure and having hook means on which said height descending means may be located.
Preferably the device is shaped to locate over the windowsill of a bedroom window so that, in an emergency, a rope or preferably a rope ladder may be located on the device to enable a person to descend from the bedroom. The emergence may be, for instance, a fire which prevents the person descending by means of the stairs.
The present invention also includes the above mentioned device of the invention with a rope ladder attached thereto.
The device is preferably made of metal bar which may be plastics coated.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention the device is in the form of two Sshaped portions of metal bar interconnected by two parallel rungs. One rung interconnects an end of one S-shaped portion with an end of the other S-shaped portion and the other rung interconnects that bight portion close to the other end of one S-shaped portion with the corresponding bight portion of the other S-shaped portion. When located in position on a windowsill the first mentioned rung will be positioned below the sill, the bight portions adjacent thereto will be located around the innermost edge of the sill and the rope ladder can be attached over the ends of the S-shaped portion close to the other rung. In another preferred embodiment said other end of each S-shaped portion is formed into a closed loop.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of examples only, and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 shows the device of Fig. 1 located over a windowsill with a rope ladder attached thereto; and Figure 3 shows another device in accordance with the present invention located over a windowsill with a rope ladder attached thereto.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, a device in accordance with the present invention is made of plastics coated metal bar and comprises two S-shaped portions 1 and 3 which are interconnected by rungs 5 and 7.
Rung 5 interconnects S-shaped portions 1 and 3 between one end of each S-shaped portion. Rung 7 interconnects the S-shaped portions between the bights of the S-shaped portions which are remote from the abovementioned ends thereof. The device is in the form of the integral rigid structure and the rungs may be fixed to the S-shaped portions by means of welded or soldered joints or indeed in any other suitable way.
As illustrated in Fig. 2 the device may be located over a windowsill 9 with the free ends 11 of the S-shaped portions of the device upstanding from the windowsill and the other ends of the S-shaped portions being located below the sill. The ends of a rope ladder 1 3 may be positioned over free ends 11 of the device. With the rope ladder hanging down from the windowsill, it is supported by the device of the invention which, due to the shape of the device, securely grips the windowsill irrespective of the weight of the rope ladder and any person positioned thereon.
Indeed the greater the weight on the rope ladder the more securely does the device grip the windowsill.
Referring to Fig. 3, another device 21 in accordance with the present invention is similar to that described above with reference to Figs. 1 and 2 except that the free ends 11 of the device of Figs. 1 and 2 are replaced by closed loops 23. Attached to the device is a rope ladder 25 having light-weight aliminium rungs 27 and wire rope 29. The ends of each rope 29 are looped through the closed loops 23 of the device 21.
A device in accordance with the present invention, together with a rope ladder attached thereto, may be stored when not in use by being wound on a suitable reel. In an ermergency the device, with the rope ladder attached thereto, may be located over the windowsill and the reel allowed to fall to the ground with simultaneous unwinding of the rope ladder.
1. A device for supporting means by which heights may be descended, the device comprising a rigid member shaped to locate over a portion of a windowsill or like structure and having means on which said height descending means may be located.
2. A device according to claim 1 having a rope ladder attached thereto.
3. A device according to claim 1 to claim 2 and made of metal bar.
4. A device according to claim 3 wherein the metal bar is coated with plastics.
5. A device according to any of the preceding claims wherein the device is in the form of two S-shaped portions of metal bar interconnected by two parallel rungs.
6. A device according to claim 5 wherein one end of each S-shaped portion is formed into a closed loop.
