Abstract

A groundbait for fishing contains powdered dried invertebrates, such as fly larvae or maggots and earthworms or lumbricus. The groundbait is produced by (1) formation of a paste by wet fine grinding of live maggots or worms; (2) addition of polyoses such as starch and preservatives to the paste or to the worms before grinding; (3) drying by an apparatus having a scraped surface or by spray drying. The bait may also contain protein such as fish meal or meat; maize or rice, copra, peanut or soya cake and breadcrumbs.

Description

SPECIFICATION A bait or groundbait composition The present invention is in the field of fishing and more particularly is concerned with a composition useful as a baitorgroundbaitorat least as a component of a bait or groundbait, together with a method for the preparation ofthe composition and such a bait.
FR 2145785 describes a bait composition which comprises fishmeal as one component. The bait de scribe is essentially intended for sea fishing.
Most fish, and in particular but not exclusively river fish are very fond of fly larvae generally known as maggots. Maggots may be used either directly as bait on a hook or incorporated into groundbaitto attract fish. However, the use of maggots in groundbait has at least two disadvantages. Firstly their life-span as larvae is limited to a few dozen hours. Secondly it is claimed that if the larvae are swallowed alive by a fish, then they attack its gut causing the fishes death.
The later problem may account for a prohibition on the use of maggots in certain categories of river.
In one aspect, the present invention aims to provide a composition and a method for its preparation, which is at least as attractive to fish as the larva itself, which may be preserved for practically an indefinite length of time and which is not objectionable to as being harmful to aquatic life.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a composition for use in a bait or groundbaitforfishing, comprising a powderofin- vertebrates, the said invertebrates being at least one of fly larvae, maggots, earthworms, and lumbricus.
Powderis defined to bethemoreorlessfrag- mented state ofthe dried invertebrate.
As noted above, the composition ofthe invention may comprise a dry powder of earthworms or lumbri- cus. Such a powder may be prepared in substantially the same way as the powder of maggots, which is described below. Thus these two types of invertebrate are treated as being equivalent in the description as regards their intended use in the bait or groundbait composition, although maggots are preferred in the majority of cases.
The powder produced from the maggots may be used itself as a groundbaitfor attracting fish. However, it is preferred that it is mixed with othercompo- nents to form a bait composition.
According to another aspect ofthe invention, there is provided a method of manufacturing a product according to any preceding claim comprising the steps of: forming a paste by wet fine grinding invertebrates, the said invertebrates being at least one of fly larvae, maggots, earthworms and lubricus, previously, simultaneously, or subsequently adding a polyose and a preservative to the invertebrates or paste thereof, and drying the paste.
Preferably the drying is carried out by means of a rotary-drum drier having a scraped surface.
Preferablythestarch is added intheform of an aqueous suspension of 25% of starch, and is added in an amount of the order of 5 to 50% by weight of the final dry product.
Preferably the preservative is an anti-oxidizing agent such as ascorbic acid. The proportion of ascor bit acid added is ofthe order of 0.5 to 2 per 1000 by weight of paste, or between 0.1 and 2% of the final dry product.
The product resulting from the drying on the drum is in the form of brittle flakes. These flakes may be easily crushed in a mill, which may take the form for example of a grinder or alternatively some form of mixer. The flakes produced are composed mainly of proteins and polyose.
Figure lisa flow diagram illustrating the steps for producing the various forms of bait of the present invention.
Thus fly larvae or maggots A, or earthworms or lumbricus B, are placed in a tank 1, and a suspension of starch (a) and an anti-oxidizing agent (b) added.
The mixture is then passed to a turbo-grinder 2 having a grating, forwetfine grinding the mixture.
The paste obtained from the grinder 2 is passed onto a rotary-drum dryer 3. Alternatively, the paste may be dried by a "spray" method using atomization and a counter-current of hot air. However, this latter drying method is probably more costly and leads to the product having a lower aroma.
The dryer 3 preferably has a scrapped surface. The flakes or grains produced by the dryer may be ground dry4to provide powder A", B", mixed with other constituents 5 (c, d, e, etc ) whilst being simultaneously ground to provide a bait composition A", B", or finally may be packaged without further processing for direct use 6.
Two examples of a bait composition will now be given. These both advantageously employ powder formedfrom maggots by the method described above: Example 1 English breadcrumbs 18 kg; Broken maize 17 kg; Peanut cake 8 kg; Soy cake 17 kg; Molasses of copra 22 kg; Ruskfragments 18 kg; An aromatic composition 100 9 ; Dried maggot powder 10 kg Example2 Expeller maize 17 keg; Floweret 17 kg; Biscuit 8 kg; Peanutcake 12 kg; Broken rice 18 kg; Broken maize 11 kg; Natural copra 17 kg; An aromatic composition 200 g; Dried maggot powder 5 kg.
These compositions have the advantage of generally being as attractive to "white" fish as living maggots, whilst avoiding their disadvantages such as, for example, of small fish gorging themselves on them.
They equally well enable the use of other bait such as water worms, boiled grain, etc. which is of little value if living maggots are incorporated into the bait.
This is another very important advantage of the compositions ofthe present invention.
Although particular forms have been described and/or represented for putting into effect the method of preparation, and ofthe particular compositions of the products, it must be understood that the scope of the present invention is not restricted to these specific cases but that it extends to the whole ofthe products and the method as defined above in the widest sense.
