Description

SPECIFICATION Bedspread This invention concerns a bedspread of the kind which forms a decorative cover to the bed including the divan or other mattress support.
Conventional bedspreads, whether of quilted or other construction are intended essentially as decorative covers for the bed during the day and are generally removed from the bed when it is in use at night.
Recently so-called continental quilts or duvets have become popular and replaced much conventional bedding including top sheets, blankets, eiderdowns and conventional bedspreads as mentioned above. They do, however, require the use of a valance to cover the divan in the interests of appearance. Duvets have one important problem. If they have a sufficient warmth factor to be suitable during the winter months without additional covers, which is, of course, their intended purpose, they will invariably be too warm for the summer months, requiring the householder to maintain a supply of ordinary blankets and conventional bedspread or more usually to use the duvet as a decorative cover by day and position its not inconsiderable bulk on the floor at night. One attempt to mitigate this problem involves the use of a pair of duvets of different warmth factors of which one or the other or both may be used, the two fastening together around their edges when used together. However, the fastening and unfastening operations as well as storage of any unused part are generally inconvenient.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an alternative and possibly more appealing solution to the problems aforesaid.
According to the present invention there is provided a bedspread intended for use on a bed at night including a portion adapted to overlie the mattress and in the form of a pocket and at least one insert of desired warmth factor adapted to be located in said pocket.
The warmth factor of the pocket itself may be suitable for summer months.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description, with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing, which shows, by way of example only, a perspective view of one form of bedspread embodying the invention.
Referring now to the drawing, it will be seen that the bedspread, generally indicated at 10, has a major surface 11 adapted to overlie the mattress of the bed on which it is used and a frill 12 extending downwardly from three sides of the surface 11 adapted to cover the sides and foot of the bed to present a neat and tidy appearance.
The major surface 11 is in the form of a pocket 13 and has an upper layer 14 which may be of a decorative quilted construction and a lower layer 15. The layers 14 and 15 are joined along three of their sides but separable along the fourth side - adapted to be disposed adjacent the foot of the bed - by means of stud connectors, a slide fastener, Velcro (Registered Trade Mark) or other suitable means (not shown) to give access to the interior of the pocket 13.
That portion of the frill 12 at the foot of the bed is connected to the layer 14 so as to cover the entrance to the pocket 13.
The warmth factor of the combination of the layers 14 and 15 is suitable for comfort without any additional bedding during summer months and it typically 4.5 togs.
An insert 16 in the form of a closed rectangular bag 17 having a shape and size corresponding with those of the surface 11 and hence pocket 13 and filled with a thermal insulant such as a synthetic fibre fleece is provided. The warmth value of the insert 16 is such that when it is positioned within the pocket 13, the warmth value of the bedspread/insert combination is suitable for comfort during winter months. The warmth value of the insert 16 is typically 9.0 tog.
Different inserts 16 of different warmth values may be provided if desired enabling a user to select one best suited to his requirement or to possess more than one giving greater control over comfort over a range of temperatures.
The pocket retains the insert in position on the bed without risk of slippage.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof.
