Abstract

A circular grinding machine has a base 1 which carries an inclined inherently rigid bed 2 for a headstock 3, a tailstock 4 and a cross slide 7 for a pivotable carrier 6 of an internal and an external grinding tool. A set of vibration-damping elastic pads 11 is mounted between the base and a rigid frame of the bed. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Grinding machine The invention relates to machine tools in general, especially to grinding machines.
Acirculargrinding machine normally comprises a parallelepiped bed which supports all essential components normally including a headstock, a tailstock and a tool carrier. The bed is mounted on a selected portion ofthefloor in the hall of a plant so that itis held against externally induced vibration. Such mode of mounting the bed in a plant, i.e. that the bed need not vibrate in response to vibration ofthe floor, is complexandtime-consuming and can be carried out in an optimum way only by skilled persons.Furthermore, the height of a properly installed convention al circulargrinding machineisnormallysuchthatitis necessary to install a platform and/or a stairway so that the attendants can reach and properly service all parts ofthe machine.
The improved machine tool can constitute a circu lar grinding machine and comprises an understructure, an inherently rigid superstructure, vibrationdamping means interposed between the superstructure and the understructure, and tool-supporting and work-supporting means mounted on the superstructure.
The vibration-damping means preferably compris es a plurality of (e.g., four) spaced-apartelastic cushions in the form of pads orthe like.
The superstructure preferably comprises a rigid frame, and the vibration-damping means is then in- terposed between such frame and the understructure. The frame can be assembled of or can comprise rigid profiled beams, e.g., one or more hollow profiled beams.
In accordance with a presently preferred embodiment ofthe invention, at least the upper part ofthe superstructure is inclined with reference to the understructure.
The work-supporting means can comprise a headstock and a tailstock, and the tool-supporting means can comprise a mobile slide and a tool carrier on the slide. Means can be provided to pivot the carrier with reference to the slide, for example, if thetoolsupporting means comprises means for carrying a plurality of (e.g., two) grinding tools one of which is idle when another tool is in actual use and vice versa.
The novel features which are considered as charac teristicofthe invention are set forth in particularinthe appended claims. The improved machine tool itself, however, both as to its construction and its mode of operation, together with additional features and advantages thereof, will be best understood upon perusal of the following detailed description of certain specific embodiments with reference to the accompanying drawing.
The single Figure of the drawing is a somewhat schematic perspective view of a circular grinding machine which embodies the invention.
The machine tool which is shown in the drawing constitutes a circular grinding machine with two main sections, namely an understructure or base 1 and an inherently rigid superstructure or bed 2. The bed 2 carriesawork-supporting means including a fixedly mounted headstock3 and a reciprocabletailstock4, and a tool-supporting means including a cross slide 7 and a tool carrier 6 on the cross slide. The bed 2 comprises a rigid frame 9 which is assembled of several profiled beams including one or more hollow beams 8.The upper part of the bed 2 (such upper part actually supports the headstock 3, the tailstock 4 and the cross slide 6) is inclined with reference to the base 1.The machine tool further comprises vibrationdamping means which is interposed between the frame 9 and the base 1 and includes four elastic cushions or pads 11 (known as so-called vibration dampening connectors, manufactured for example by Continental-Gummiwerke AG, Hannover) (only two shown) which can be disposed at the corners of a rectangle or square.
The base 1 is provided with a tank (not specifically shown) for a liquid coolant (e.g., water) and with a circulating band-like filter 12 for the coolant. The coolant is returned into the tank by flowing through the filter 12.
The upper part of the bed 2 is provided with elongated guide means in the form of one or more tracks 13 for the reciprocable tailstock 4. Aworkpiece 14 (e.g., an elongated spindle or a camshaft) can be driven by a torque-transmitting element 16 of the headstock 3 and is held between such element and a center 17 ofthetailstock4.
The cross slide 7 is reciprocable in the direction of the X-axis by a first motor 22 and in the direction of the Z-axis by a second motor 23 in conjunction with a fixedly mounted prestressed feed screw 18. The reference character 24 denotes a flexible trailing cable which connects the energy source (not shown) with the energy consuming component or components on the cross slide 7. The tool carrier 6 includes means for supporting a pin-shaped first material removing tool 26 which serves for internal grinding and a wheelshaped second material removing tool 28 for external grinding.Thetool 28 can be driven bya motor27 which is mounted on the carrier 6.The carrier 6 is pivotable with reference to the cross slide 7 by a further motor31 so that it can assume the illustrated position (in which the tool 28 is ready to remove material from the workpiece 14) and a second position in which the tool 28 is remote from the material removing station butthetool 26 is readyforinternal grinding. The motor 31 can pivot the carrier 6 about an axis 29.
The feed screw 18 is spaced apart from and parallel with a tensioning bar or rod 19 which serves to prevent one-sided or unbalanced tensioning. Thetransmission (not shown) which cooperates with the feed screw 18 is installed in a shroud 21.
It is equallywithin the purview of the invention to change the orientation of the bed 2 so that its upper part is disposed in or close to a horizontal plane.
The exact construction of the means for driving the filter 12, of the means for driving the torquetransmitting element 14, of the means fortransmitting motion between a prime moverandthetailstock 4, of the means for transmitting motion between the motor 31 and the carrier 6 and/or other motion transmitting means forms no part of the present invention.
An important advantage of the improved machine tool isthatan optimumfrequencytuning can be carried out in a short or long series of machines atthe manufacturing plant so as to ensure that each machine isfully assembled priortotransporttothe plant of the purchaser and that the mounting of such machine at the selected location in the plant takes up a very small amount of time, even ifthework is performed by semiskilled or unskilled persons.
Another important advantage of the improved machine isthatthe base 1 can support one or more vibration generating auxiliary apparatus including switch boxes, shields against sprays of cooling medium, work and tool manipulating devices as well as one ormore magazinesforsparetools. The installation and operation of such auxiliary apparatus on the bed 1 does not affect the accuracy of treatment of a workpiece which is held by the tool-supporting means on the bed 2 and is acted upon by a selected tool.
