Abstract

A map is formed by taking an aerial photograph of a town and tracing over the visible portions of the roads on that photograph. The portion of the roads not visible from the photograph are extrapolated from those portions which are visible. The major roads are two spaced apart lines which taper towards each other as they go up the map away from the point where the photograph was taken. The minor roads are solid lines which decrease in width as they go up the map.

Description

SPECIFICATION Maps The present invention relates to a method of producing a map.
Previously road or town maps have been produced which are plan view where everything is shown to the same scale. Such maps do not represent what could be seen from a particular point of an area.
According to one aspect of the present invention, a method of producing a map comprises taking selected information from a photographic image. Such a map may be fairly simple to produce and may provide a map of what can or would be seen from a particular point of an area.
The method may further comprise adding information on portions which are not visible on the photographic image. The method may further comprise adding information by extrapolating from portions which are visible on the photographic image. Thus if it desired to include one type of information on a map, for instance roads, where stretches of the roads are hidden by buildings on the photographic image, those stretches can be included to give a complete view on the map of the roads, such a view corresponding with that which could be seen on a photographic image were all of the obstructions to be removed.
The method may comprise tracing over selected portions shown in a photograph of an area, which photograph may be an aerial photograph.
The present invention also includes a map which has been produced by a method according to the invention previously defined.
The present invention includes a method of producing a road map, and a road map which has been produced by the invention previously defined.
The invention may be carried into practice in various ways, but one embodiment will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying diagram which is a road map of Halifax Town Centre.
The map 10 is formed by first taking an aerial photograph of the town. Then those portions of the roads which are visible from the photograph, and are not obstructed by the buildings, are traced over. The remainder of the roads can be filled in later by extrapolating from those portions of the roads which are visible from the photograph, or, where no portion of a road is visible, the roads can be drawn in using the visible roads on the reference points.
The major roads 12 are shown by two spaced apart lines which taper towards each other as they go up the map away from the point where the photograph was taken. The minor roads 14 are shown as solid lines which decrease in width as they go up the map.
Various key reference buildings have been included diagramatically such as the Halifax Royal Infirmary 14 and the railway station 16.
1. A method of producing a map comprising taking selected information from a photographic image.
2. A method as claimed in Claim 1 comprising reproducing selected information from a photographic image.
3. A method as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 comprising adding information on portions which are not visible on the photographic image.
4. A method as claimed in Claim 3 comprising adding information by extrapolating from portions which are visible on the photographic image.
5. A method as claimed in any preceding claim comprising tracing over selected portions shown in a photograph of an area.
6. A method as claimed in Claim 5 in which the photograph comprises an aerial photograph.
7. A method of producing a map substantially as herein described with reference to, and as shown in the accompanying drawing.
8. A map which has been produced by a method according to any preceding claim.
