Rotary strainers; travelling-band strainers.- Apparatus for screening water for condensing plants &c. comprises a number of channels having at the sides moving screens through which the water passes in a direction across the direction of the stream in the channel, the screens being arranged on one or more faces so that the water passes in opposite directions through the members of each pair to a common outlet. Water is diverted from a culvert 1 through a settling-pit 4 and inlets 5, and, after passage through rotary disc screens 6, is returned through outlets 7 and a channel 8 to the culvert 1. Each pair of discs 6 is mounted on a common shaft 6<a>, driven by reducing gearing from Pelton wheels 10 supplied with water from the channel 2 by a centrifugal pump 12. The pump 12 also supplies water to rotary jets 16 which wash matter adhering to the screens into troughs, suitably placed on the inlet side of the screens and discharging into collecting boxes 18 provided with removable baskets. Sediment is discharged from the pit 4 to a trough 25 through a flexible pipe 22 by a pump 21 mounted on a trolley 23. Endless-band screens, driven by Pelton wheels and with their rising and falling sides parallel to the end walls 27 may be used instead of the rotary disc screens. Washing water may be supplied to rotary disc screens through a hollow spindle on which they are mounted: the spray jets may rotate with the screens automatically-operated valve-control devices being employed so that water is delivered only to the jets above water level.
