Description
SPECIFICATION
Vehicle jacks
This invention relates to vehicle jacks.
The present invention provides a jack comprising first and second pivotally interconnected elongate members, a foot at an end of the first member, a load-support element at an end of the second member, and a screw connected between the members for pivotally adjusting their relative angular positions for raising or lowering the loadsupport element relative to the foot, wherein the second member and the load-support element have an arcuate track, and a formation engaged with the track, respectively, the arc having an axis parallel to the axis of the pivotal connection with the first member and located between the track and the pivotal connection, the load-support element being angularly movable about said axis of the arc relative to the second member by means of said track.
The invention may reside in a jack comprising first and second pivotally interconnected elongate members, a foot at an end of the first member, a load-support element at an end of the second member, and a screw connected between the members for pivotally adjusting their relative angular positions for raising or lowering the loadsupport element relative to the foot, wherein the first member and the foot have an arcuate track and a formation engaged with the track, respectively, the axis of the arc being parallel to the axis of the pivotal connection with the second member and located between the track and the pivotal connection, the first member being pivotally movable about the axis of the arc relative to the foot by means of said track.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, wherein the sole Figure is a side view of a jack according to the invention.
The jack comprises a first member defining a leg 11, which is of channel form. The leg is supported at one end by a foot 12. A second member, also of channel form, defines an arm 13 and is received at one end within the channel of the leg 11. The arm is pivotally connected to the leg by a pivot pin 14 at a location between the ends of the leg and nearer to the top of the leg than to the foot 12.
The top edges of the channel sides of the leg have slots 16 which rotatably receive trunnions 17 on a nut 18, so that the nut is angularly movable about the axis of the trunnions, parallel to the axis of the pivot pin 14. A screw 20 is screw-engaged with the nut and terminates at one end in a thrust bearing arrangement 21. The shank of the screw adjacent to the bearing arrangement extends transversely through a pivot member 22 and a shoulder 23 co-acts with the thrust bearing to fix the screw relative to the pivot member. The pivot member is rotatably engaged in the channel sides of the arm 13 about an axis parallel to the axes of the pivot pin 14 and the trunnions 17. The opposite end of the screw has a handle 25 pivotally connected thereto for manually rotating the screw.
The upper end of the arm 13, opposite to the pivot pin 14, is provided with a track 30. The track is formed of sheet metal and is arcuate. The track has a continuous arcuate bottom surface 31, stop portions 32, 33 at the ends of the bottom surface, and arcuate top portions 34, 35 adjacent the stop portions and co/ axial with the bottom surface 31. The axis 36 of the track is parallel to the axis of the pivot pin 14 and is located between the track and the pivot pin 14.
A load-support element 40 has a channel-shaped support part 42, for engaging with a body seam of a vehicle, and a guide part 42. The guide part is arcuate and complementary to the track 30 and is held captive between the bottom surface 31 and the top portions 34, 35.
In operation, the screw 20 can be rotated to raise the arm 13 pivotally in conventional manner so as to lift a vehicle whose seam is engaged with the load-support element 40. As the vehicle is lifted, there is angular movement between the element 40 and the track 30, fixed to the arm 13. This movement is controlled by frictional resistance between the guide part 42 and the track 30 and the movement is restricted by the stops 32, 33. This ensures stability of the jack, whilst the movement relative to the vehicle reduces the risk of damage to the vehicle.
To ensure that the frictional resistance is not too high and to facilitate manufacture, the load-support element 40 may be a one-piece plastics moulding.
The bottom of the leg 11 is provided with a second track 50 of similar construction to the first track 30. The foot 12 comprises a base portion 55, with a ridged bottom surface 56 for good grip, and a guide portion 57. The guide portion is arcuate, complementary to the second track 50 and engaged in the latter. The axis of the guide portion and the second track is between the pivot pin 14 and the second track. The foot may also be a onepiece plastics moulding.
In use, as the screw 20 is turned for raising a vehicle, the leg 11 approaches a vertical position and this is permitted, by movement of the track relative to the foot, without any rocking movement of the foot. This reduces the risk of slippage of the foot, whilst the pivotal movement is controlled by frictional resistance and limited by stops 58, 59 at the ends of the second track 50.
1. A jack comprising first and second pivotally interconnected elongate members, a base element at an end of the first member, a load-support element at an end of the second member, and a screw connected between the members for pivotally adjusting their relative angular positions for raising and lowering the load/ support element relative to the base eiement, wherein at least one of the base element and the load-support element is angularly movable relative to its respective member by means of an arcuate track and a formation engaged with the track and provided one on the element and the other on the member, the axis of
