Description

SPECIFICATION A laminating machine for providing laminates of pictures on backing boards This invention relates to a laminating machine for providing laminates of pictures on backing boards.
Laminating machines providing laminates of pictures on backing boards are well known. The laminated pictures are used, for example, for large scale shop and exhibition displays. The known machines can be used to provide a basic laminate of a picture on a backing board, or the machines can be used to provide a more sophiscated laminate of a picture on a backing board, with the picture being protected by a sheet of transparent material.
The known laminating machines range from simple hand operated roller press machines to various different types of electrically operated roller press machines. All of these machines are not sufficiently automated in their operation and too much manual operator involvement is required, thus preventing the formation of laminates in substantially continuous operator runs. Also, the electrically operated roller press machines tend to be somewhat large and expensive.
It is an aim of the present invention to obviate or reduce the above mentioned problems.
Accordingly, this invention provides a laminating machine for providing laminates of pictures on backing boards, which laminating machine comprises first mounting means for mounting a roll of pictures in rolled sheet material form, a first set of rollers for applying laminating pressure to unrolled sheet material from the roll and to a backing board to form a laminate, a second set of rollers for maintaining tension on the sheet material as its passes through the first set of rollers, and cutter means for separating the laminate from the remainder of the roll, whereby the laminating machine is such that substantially continuous laminating runs can be achieved in operation with sheet material being substantially continuously unrolled, formed into a laminate with the backing board and separated from the roll.
The laminating machine may be used to provide merely a basic laminate of a picture on a backing board. Alternatively, the laminating machine may be used to employ a more sophisticated laminate of a picture on a backing board, with the picture being protected by a sheet of transparent material, such for example as polyvinyl chloride or an acetate material. The laminating machine will then usually be provided with second mounting means for mounting a roll of the protective transparent material.
Any type of known backing board may be employed, for example cardboard, foamboard and hardboard. The backing board can be supplied such that it is already provided with an adhesive layer which is protected by a peel offbacking sheet.
Alternatively, the backing board can be provided with the required adhesive in the vicinity of the machine. If desired, the adhesive could be provided on the sheet material rather than on the backing board. Usually, the adhesive will be a pressure-sensitive adhesive.
The laminating machine is preferably such that the cutter means can be set to work in a synchronous manner with the first and second sets of rollers in order to cut exactly where required at the end of each running cycle of the first and second sets of rollers.
If desired, the laminating machine can be programmed for substantially totally automatic operation, whereby the laminating machine works in laminating cycles with the first and second sets of rollers being arranged to rotate the required number of times for a required length of the sheet material to pass through the first and the second sets of rollers, and then the first and the second sets of rollers being arranged to stop whilst the cutter means operates.
The laminating machine may include a motor for driving the first and second sets of rollers.
Preferably, the motor is a variable speed motor.
The motor may however be a fixed speed motor if desired. The motor may be a stepping motor.
The laminating machine may include control means giving a choice of automatic running of the machine or foot pedal operation for starting each laminating cycle.
Preferably, the laminating machine is produced of a size that will fit on a desk or table top. The laminating machine can then advantageously be used in the numerous relatively small picture laminating laboratories that currently exist.
The laminating machine may have adjusting means for adjusting the gap between the rollers of the first and second sets of rollers. The gap may be adjustable, for example from 0 - 25mm, to allow for various thicknesses of laminate to be formed.
The rollers may be made of known materials currently used for rollers in known laminating machines. The rollers may thus be made of rubber positioned around a central metal core about which the rollers rotate. The rolLers can advantageously be provided with a silicone coating which acts to stop adhesive sticking to the rollers.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view of a laminating machine.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a laminating machine 2 for providing laminates of pictures on backing boards (not shown). The laminating machine 2 comprises first mounting means 4 for mounting a roll 6 of pictures in rolled sheet material form. The first mounting means 4 comprises a pair of upstanding arms 8, 10 which support a shaft 12 about which the roll 6 is mounted and is rotatable.
The laminating machine 2 comprises a first set of rollers 14, 16 which rotate as indicated by the arrows on the rollers 14, 16. The first set of rollers 14, 16 are for applying laminating pressure to unrolled sheet material which is unrolled from the roll 6 and which passes between the two rollers 14, 16 as they rotate. In order to form the required laminate, a piece of backing board 18 is placed on a front section 20 of the laminating machine 2 and is located by being placed against an upstanding locating bar 22. The backing board 18 is pushed or otherwise fed in the direction of the arrows 24 through the rollers 14, 16 as they rotate and as the sheet material from the roll 6 also passes through the rollers. The pressure applied by the rollers 14, 16 on to the sheet material and on to the backing board 18 (which is provided with a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive material on its upper surface) is effective to bond the sheet material to the backing board 18 to form a laminate.
The laminating machine 2 is provided with roller adjusting means 26 for adjusting the gap between the rollers 14, 16. The roller adjusting means comprises a pair of hand screws 28, 30 which operate on a frame 32.
The laminating machine 2 is further provided with a second set of rollers 34, 36 and these rollers rotate in the same direction as the rollers 14, 16 respectively. The rollers 34, 36 are for maintaining tension on the sheet material as it passes through the first set of rollers 14, 16. The rollers 34, 36 thus act to prevent the sheet material wrinkling or otherwise crinkling up since this spoils the laminate and it can be a time consuming operation to correct.
The rollers 34, 36 are also provided with adjusting means 38 for adjusting the gap between the rollers 34, 36 to allow for the thickness of the laminate to be formed. The adjusting means 38 is substantially the same as the adjusting means 26, so that the adjusting means 38 comprises hand screws 40, 42 which are mounted on a frame 44.
In case it may be desired to provide the laminate of the picture sheet material and the backing board 18 with a protective transparent layer, the laminating machine 2 is provided with second mounting means 46. The second mounting means 46 is constructed similarly to the first mounting means 4 and it will be seen that it comprises arms 48, 50 and a shaft 52.
The laminating machine 2 further comprises cutter means 54 for separating the formed laminate from the remainder of the roll 6. The cutter means 54 comprises an arm 56 which is attached to the adjusting means 38. The cutter means 54 also comprises a blade 58. Because the arm 56 is attached to the adjusting means 38, it will be apparent that when the hand screws 40, 42 are screwed to the required depth, the arm 56 and therefore the blade 58 will automatically be lowered or raised to the required cutting depth. The blade 58 can then be arranged to make a reciprocatory cutting motion by an appropriate drive device (not shown).
The rollers 14, 16 and 34, 36 are driven by a variable speed electric motor 60 which operates a drive chain 62. The drive chain 62 runs on three sprockets 64, 66, 68 as shown and the sprocket 64 is in driving engagement with a drive shaft (not shown) of the motor 60.
The motor 60 can be programmed such that it causes the rollers 14, 16 and 34, 36 to rotate a desired number of times equal to the length of a laminate to be formed. The rollers 14, 16 and 34, 36 can then be arranged by the programme to stop rotating whilst the blade 58 effects it cutting action.
Lowering of the blade and the reciprocatory action of the blade can also be caused automatically by the programme.
It will thus be appreciated that the laminating machine 2 can be arranged to operate substantially automatically in predetermined programme cycles.
This means that an operator can produce a batch of laminates in a substantially continuous operator run if desired. The laminating machine 2 can be arranged to run virtually totally automatically or it can be provided with a foot pedal control (not shown) for starting the machine at the end of each laminating cycle.
The laminating machine 2 can be made in any desired size but it is presently preferred that it is made in a relatively small size that can be mounted on a table or a desk top. The laminating machine 2 is thus easy and convenient to use and the cutting of the pictures from the roll 6 is effected in an easy manner after the laminates have been formed, and not before the laminates have been formed as is the case with many known machines.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, if desired, different types of first and second mounting means 4, 46 may be employed. Also, a different drive arrangement to that shown may be employed. Further, the cutter blade 58 could be replaced by a cutter disc. Advantageously, the first set of rollers 14, 16 is provided with a sensing device effective to stop operation of the rollers 14, 16 in the event that an operator's hand gets too close to the rollers 14, 16. Thus, for example, the front top roller 14 can be fitted with an electronic eye or other operator-position sensing device.
