Abstract

A carton 1 for containing a liquid such as milk or fruit juice comprises means for defining two spaced orifices 2 and 3 for providing a controlled flow of liquid from the container. The container 1 is formed from a blank which, when assembled to form the container, provides two folded back arrangements which when pulled out form the orifices 2 and 3 when a part of the container is cut or torn off along oblique cut or tear lines indicated on the exterior of the container, which also carries instructions for the user. When the container is tilted to dispense the liquid contents, a steady controlled flow of liquid is achieved from dispensing orifice 2 which can be targeted at the desired target area, without "overshooting", slopping or spilling. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A carton The invention relates to a carton.
Cartons for containing and dispensing liquids such as milk orfruitjuice are known. They are generally made of a suitable material such as a liquid-proof cardboard. The cartons are usually sold intact, containing the liquid the purchaser desires, with an arrangement whereby a spout can be formed by manipulating the cardboard and cutting it to provide a relatively large pouring or dispensing aperture or spout.
Experience shows that with a single aperture it is almost impossible to commence pouring without ejecting some of the contents beyond the intended target area, and the pourer's apprehension at this affect usually results in an involuntary squeezing of the carton adding to further unpredictability.
It is noticeable that, for example particularly when trying to add a desired volumn of milk to a cup of tea or coffee, an existing carton is incapable of dispensing the desired quantity with any real consistency.
According to the invention there is provided a carton for containing and dispensing a liquid, comprising means for providing a controlled flow of liquid from the container.
The said means may comprise a dispensing orifice and an orifice displaced therefrom which is adapted for passage of air during dispensing of liquid through the dispensing orifice.
The two orifices may each be of less surface area than the single pouring aperture of the known cartons.
It will be understood that the invention extends a carton with an arrangement for providing said means.
The arrangement may provide instructions and a cut or tear line for providing each orifice.
A carton embodying the invention is hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows a schematic perspective view of the carton.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a carton 1 for containing a liquid such as milk or fruit juice comprising means in the form of two spaced orifices 2 and 3 for providing a controlled flow of liquid from the container.
The container 1 is formed from a blank which, when assembled to form the container, provides two folded back arrangements which when pulled out from the orifice 2 and 3 when a part of the container is cut or torn off along oblique cut or tear lines indicated on the exterior of the container, which also carries instructions for the user.
When the container is tilted to dispense the liquid contents, a steady controlled flow of liquid is achieved from dispensing orifice 2which can be targeted at the desired target area, without "overshooting", slopping or spilling.
This is because in one-aperture containers, when the container is tilted to dispense the liquid initially "compresses" the air in the corner opposite the aperture, the liquid itself being.virtually incompressible. When the liquid reaches the aperture for pouring, the flow is enhanced by the pressure of the trapped air "shooting" the liquid out in a stream beyond the intended target. The provision of the additional orifice obviates this disadvantage in allowing air which would otherwise be compressed to escape, so that the surface of the liquid being poured is at atmospheric pressure and not subject to any additional pressure so that a steady and controlled flow is achieved.
The two orifices are at opposite sides or corners of the container.
Indeed, it has been found that pouring from a container embodying the invention is superior to the majority of jugs and lipped liquid dispensers in common use.
1. A carton for containing and dispensing a liquid, comprising means for providing a controlled flow of liquid from the container.
2. A carton according to Claim 1, the said means comprising a dispensing orifice and an orifice displaced therefrom which is adapted for passage of air during dispensing of liquid through the dispensing orifice.
3. A carton according to Claim 2, the two orifices each being of less surface area than the single pouring aperture of known cartons.
4. A carton according to any preceding claim, including an arrangement for providing said means.
5. A carton according to Claim 4, the arrangement comprising instructions and a cut or tear line for providing each orifice.
6. A carton, substantially as herein before described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
