Abstract
The invention relates to a liquid crystal display device 1 wherein there is means in the form of a laminate 2 of metal foil e.g. of aluminium for dissipating incident heat energy so that a desired contrast ratio between the legend 3 and the background 5 is maintained and the legend is visible. The metal foil laminate 2 is in the form of a strip which is secured by suitable means such as adhesive to a major surface 4 of the device 1 through which the legend 3 is viewed, at the perimeter 6 thereof. There is a metallic heat sink 7 at each end of the liquid crystal display device 1, so that heat is conducted rapidly from the device 1 through the foil 2 to which the heat sinks 7 are connected. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A liquid crystal display device
The invention relates to a liquid crystal display device.
Liquid crystal display devices usually display numerals or other legends which are visible as a black figure against a greyish background.
The liquid crystal display device displays the required legend(s) in response to electronic input, and the legends are rendered visible by maintaining a desired contrast ratio between the background and the legend(s). This contrast ratio is usually maintained by altering the applied voltage and/or keeping the device cool. However, it sometimes happens that the device is used in a situation where it is subject to incident heat energy, and the contrast ratio is altered. In the extreme, the ratio is such that both legend(s) and the ground become black, so the legend(s) cannot be distinguished at all.
Accordingly it is an object of the invention to seek to mitigate this disadvantage.
According to the invention there is provided a liquid crystal display device, wherein there is means to dissipate incident heat energy so that the desired contrast ratio is maintained.
The heat dissipating'means may comprise a metal foil.
The foil may preferably be positioned at or adjacent the perimeter of the liquid crystal display device, preferably on the surface through which the display is viewed.
The means may comprise a laminate of two metal foils. The two foils may be secured together by an adhesive.
The or each foil may be aluminium foil, preferably 20 thick.
The means may comprise part of a heat sink.
The heat sink may comprise a metal or metallic conductor at one or more sides of the device.
A liquid crystal display device embodying the invention is hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 7 is a schematic plan view of a liquid crystal display device according to the invention; and
Figure 2 is, to a much smaller scale, a schematic view of a use of the device shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a liquid crystal display device 1 wherein there is means in the form of a laminate 2 of metal foil for dissipating incident heat energy so that a desired contrast ratio between the legend 3 and the background 5 is maintained, so that the legend is visible.
The metal foil laminate 2 is in the form of a strip which is secured by suitable means such as adhesive to a major surface 4 of the device 1 through which the legend 3 is viewed, at the perimeter 6 thereof. The laminate 2 is at the perimeter 6 of the surface just inboard thereof so as not to obscure the viewing area, and thus the legend 3.
There is a metallic heat sink 7 at each end of the (generally rectangular) liquid crystal display device 1, so that heat is conducted rapidly from the device 1 through the foil 2 to which the heat sinks 7 are connected.
The laminate 2 is made up of two layers of aluminium foil each 20 > thick and secured together by adhesive.
In use, any heat energy incident on the device 1 is dissipated by the highly heat conductive foil so that the heat energy does not alter the desired contrast ratio of the liquid crystal display device so that the legend 3 remains visible.
This result is particularly useful on applications like that shown in Figure 2, where the liquid crystal display device 1 is mounted in a fascia 8 of a cooker, the display 1 functioning as a meat probe, in other words indicating the temperature of meat being cooked in the cooker. Heat from the cooker, say from the hobs 9 thereof could affect the contrast ratio of the device 1 and render the legend 3 illegible, but for the foil 2.
The effect of the foil 2 can be demonstrated by taking a display device 1 without the foil, and heating it artificially so that its whole surface becomes black, and the legend 3 illegible. If the foil 2 is now applied to the surface 4, the blackness disappears and the desired contrast ratio is restored, with the legend 3 becoming visible.
