Abstract

217,294. Weeks & Son, Ltd., W., Weeks, W. R., Ashdown, J. W., and Pearch, L. C. March 9, 1923. Cauldrons; surface treatment with liquid materials.-Relates to machines for spraying tar and like viscous material on roads of the kind in which a tar pump B disposed within the tar tank A sucks the hottest tar through a pipe G provided with a float g. According to the invention, the pump connections are so arranged that the tar drawn from the tank may either be delivered through a pipe E to the spraying nozzles F or circulated back to the tank through a pipe H, or the pump may suck hot air through a pipe J from the upper part of the tank and deliver it through the spray pipes and nozzles to scavenge them. The delivery pipe E and transverse spray pipe E<2> are surrounded by jackets e fed with steam or hot gases. Flexible tubes N fitted with nozzles n for spraying paths are connected to each end of the spray pipe E<2>. The tar boiler has a furnace C the flues c of which extend under and through the tank to give a large heating surface. The tar boiler is mounted on girders X for ready attachment to a motor vehicle, and the top of the tank is fitted with a crank shaft b whereby the pump is driven by chain gearing from any suitable source of power or from the road wheels. The tar barrels are supported over the feed openings D bv rollers d. According to the Provisional Specification, grids heated by the flue gases are arranged on the upper part of the tank to support and preheat the thick tar until it is sufficiently fluid to pass through the grids. The top of the tar tank is also in the form of a tray to prevent tar which boils over reaching the furnace.
