Abstract

A reversible textile article comprises a layer 12 of reflective material that is more reflective towards one facing direction of the article than another. In a reversible jacket, such a layer comprises a metallized film 12a, 12b, 12c needle punched with a spun bonded polyester fibre layer 12d, sandwiched between fawny fabrics 13 and 14. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Reversible textile articles This invention relates to reversible textile articles such as but not restricted to garments.
There has recently become available an insulating interlining for garments and other articles such as jackets, parkas, coats, outdoor sportswear, sleeping bags, horse blankets and other items, which comprises a metallised film needle punched with a fibre layer. The needle punching renders the film incidentally permeable. It is said to be important to arrange the metallised face of the interlining facing the inside of the garment or other article, whereby to reflect body heat back to the wearer.
We have found this to be the case. But we have also found, surprisingly, that if the interlining is used the 'wrong' way round, it can be very effective at keeping the wearer or user cool in hot conditions. The interlining is in any event very effective, so that its insulating properties are not always required, and the wearer or user might find the garment or article in fact too warm in certain conditions when, nonetheless, it is desired to use the garment or article.
The present invention provides a garment or article which overcomes this problem and makes use of the differential insulating effect of such interlining materials.
The invention comprises a reversible textile article comprising a layer of a reflective material that is more reflective towards one facing direction of the article than the other.
The reflective material may be of the type described above comprising a metallised film bonded with a fibre layer. The said metallised film may be needle punched with the fibre layer to adhere the two together and incidentally render the film permeable (or more permeable if it is already permeable). The metallised film may comprise a reflective aluminium film.
The article may have different facing materials on its two faces. The facing material on the face on the more reflective side of the reflective material may itself be a poorer heat absorber than the facing material on the other face.
The article may have a similar arrangement of pockets, fastenings and like features on both faces.
A garment, such as a jacket, may be open at the front and may have front overlapping sections having edgewise-disposed fastening members adapted to fasten into cooperating fastening members disposed on the opposite side (left or right) of the garment inwardly of the edge. The said cooperating fastening members may be arranged to be visible on one side of the garment only so that fastening members not in use are concealed when the garment is fastened. Suitable fastening members comprise press studs or edgewise disposed button holes and inwardly disposed buttons. A front opening garment can also, of course, have a slide fastener operable with either face of the garment to the outside such as is already used on reversible garments.
The garment may be a sleeveless, waistcoat-like garment and may be adapted for use as a removable lining for an outergarment after the fashion of removable insulating linings for raincoats, say, which are already available. The reversible nature of such a removable lining can be used to give different degrees of warmth being used one way in very cold conditions, the other way in intermediate conditions and being discarded altogether in warmer conditions.
In a sleeved jacket, the reflective material can if desired be confined to the body panels. An attractive garment has body panels faced with woven material and knitted sleeves, the sleeve seams being flat-locked or similarly finished so as to be neat in appearance either face out.
One embodiment of a reversible garment according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a front view of a sleeved jacket, and Figure 2 is a cross-section through part of a body panel of the jacket of Figure 1.
The drawings illustrate a reversible textile article - in this case a sleeved jacket 11 - comprising a layer 12 of a reflective material that is more reflective towards one facing direction of the article face 13 in Figure 2 - than the other, 14.
A suitable material for the layer 12 comprises a metallised reflective aluminium film needle punched with a fibre layer. As illustrated in Figure 2 such a material comprises electron beam cured top and base coatings 12a, 12c with a vacuum deposited aluminium interlayer 12b needle punched with polyester fibres to a spun bonded polyolefin layer 12d. Such a material is available under the Trade Mark SP27 from Spacecoat Garments Limited of London having a total weight of about 4.5 oz per square yard.
The jacket 11 has different facing materials on its two faces. The facing material 13 on the more reflective side of the reflective material 11 is itself a poorer heat absorber than the facing material 14 on the other face. Typically, the material 13 may be light-coloured, and the material 14 dark. It is of course possible to use the same material for both faces of the jacket, but it is at least desirable to be able to tell which face to wear outside for the desired differential insulation effect from the reflective layer, and a good choice of facing materials can significantly enhance the performance of the garment as a whole. The facing materials can be chosen for their desirable textile properties, otherwise, in the same way materials are chosen for any garment, and finished as necessary for wind, shower or water proofing as required.
The jacket 11 can have the usual pockets 15, fastenings and like features on both faces and may be identical, if desired, whichever way out it is worn.
This particular front-opening jacket 11 has front overlapping sections 16 having edgewise disposed press stud sockets 17 adapted to fasten into cooperating stud members 18 on the opposite side (the right hand side in this case, the jacket being a man's jacket) of the garment inwardly of the edge.
The stud members 18 are visible on one face of the garment inwardly of the edge. The stud members 18 are visible on one face of the garment only so that those fastening members not in use are concealed when the jacket is fastened.
Instead of press studs, button holes could be substituted for the sockets 17 and buttons for the stud members 17. A slide fastener could be used either instead of or in addition to these fastenings and will be desirably of the type that has a slider operable from either side.
The jacket 11 could be made in sleeveless waistcoat-like form and may, in that form, be adapted for use as a removable lining for an outergarment by having additional fastening to secure it to an outergarment in the conventional way, such fastenings, however, being provided on both faces of the jacket so that it can be worn either face out.
The facing materials can in this case be appropriate to such removable linings and need not be heavy duty or proofed materials.
For a jacket intended itself as an outergarment as illustrated, the reflective material 12 may be confined to the body panels, so that the sleeveless 19 may be differently constructed - as illustrated, they are knitted, with flat-locked or otherwise neatly finished seams 21 on both faces.
The use of the reflective material as a differential thermal interlining is not of course confined to jackets, but may be applied also to trousers, coats, parkas, boiler suits, ski-clothing etc. as well as to articles other than garments such as sleeping bags and blankets and even insulating covers for hot and cold flasks and other vessels, being used one face out for a hot flask, the other way out when the flask is used to store cold substances.
