Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements relating to mounting of snow ploughs This invention relates to the mounting of snow ploughs, and in particular concerns a means whereby a snow plough may be readily and easily connected to a mounting frame or plate of a particular design.
In this country, there is a standard mounting frame or plate for snow ploughs, enabling snow ploughs to be mounted on commercial vehicles, for the clearing of snow by local authorities and the like during the relevant winter periods.
The said mounting plate or frame, which is a standard mounting plate or frame, comprises essentially a rectangular frame which when connected to the vehicle lies with its longer axis horizontal, and the frame has six forwardly projecting lug mountings, respectively at the corners of the frame and at the centres of the longer sides of the frame, each lug mounting comprising a pair of spaced lugs, and the lugs having apertures therein for receiving fixing pins.
The snow ploughs which are used with the standard mounting plate comprise arms connected to a plough blade, and the arms at the ends thereof have eyes for receipt in appropriate ones of the mounting lug pairs on the standard mounting plate, and for connection thereto using connection pins.
The plough also has a hydraulic ram in order to effect the raising and lowering of the plough blade, during which movement the said arms pivot with respect to the vehicle and plough.
The coupling of the arms to the standard plate is a difficult and time consuming job, and as it is usually performed out of doors, and when weather conditions are severe, it is invariably an unpleasant task, particularly as the snow ploughs are relatively heavy units, and considerable effort is required to manipulate the arms into position between the lug pairs.
The present invention seeks to provide a means whereby these difficulties can be overcome, and in accordance with the invention there is provided a snow plough and a mounting arrangement comprising arms defining a parallelogram type linkage for connection between the standard frame and the plough, including means for raising the ends of the arms when the mounting arrangement is disconnected from the standard frame means connecting the arms so that they will remain in the parallelogram type configuration when the mounting arrangement is disconnected from the standard frame, the couplings for coupling the mounting arrangement to the standard frame comprising hook means for hooking into the fixing pins of some of the lugs of the standard frame and eye means for coupling to others of the lugs of the standard frame.
The said means connecting may be a flat plate to one side of which the arms are pivotably connected and to the other side of which are said hook means and said eye means.
Alternatively said means connecting may comprise links pivotally connected to respective ones of said arms and said hook means and eye means being securely connected to the ends of respective ones of said arms.
The advantage of the mounting arrangement of the present invention is that coupling of the mounting arrangement to the standard frame is simplified in that when the fixing pins connecting the eye means and the appropriate ones of the fixing lugs are removed, the said means for raising the ends of the arms is operated, and the hook means unhook from the fixing pins at others of said pairs of lugs of the standard frame, completing the uncoupling of the mounting arrangement from the standard frame which is attached to the vehicle, and the vehicle can be driven backwards. During the lifting of the said arms, the plough itself will provide sufficient mass against which the means for raising can react in order to effect the lifting of the arms. When it is required once more to couple the standard frame to the mounting arrangement, the driver simply manipulates the vehicle into position, and then arranges for the lowering of the arms until the hook means engage the selected ones of the fixing pins, which operation will bring the eye means into register with other mounting lugs of the standard frame, and the eyes can be secured to the standard frame by passing the fixing pins through the aligned apertures in the lugs and eyes.
The invention will be better understood by considering the following explanation given with reference to the accompanying drawings, which show an example of the invention, and wherein: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the mounting arrangement according to the embodiment; Figure 2 is a side elevation of the arrangement shown in Figure 1, this figure also showing how the mounting arrangement can be uncoupled from the standard frame; and Figure 3 is a side elevation showing the hook ends of the hook plates showing the guide fingers thereon.
Referring to the drawings, and firstly to Figure 2, the front end 10 of a tractor is shown, and also shown is the tractor front wheel 12. Connected to the front of the tractor is the standard frame 14, and the snow plough 16 is coupled to the frame 14 by means of a mounting arrangement 18 according to this embodiment of the invention.
If reference is now made to Figure 1, the frame 14 will be seen to comprise a rectangular open structure, which is in fact made of steel, and lies with its longer axis horizontal. It is provided with six pairs of mounting lugs 20 to 30, arranged in two groups of three, the first group of three lying along the top front edge of the frame 14, and the other three lying along the bottom front edge of the frame.
The mounting arrangement comprises two Aframes 32 and 34 which lie basically horizontally, and have arms 32A, 32B and 34A, 34B to which are secured, in the case of arms 32, mounting hook plates 36, and in the case of arms 34 mounting eye plates 38. The frames 32 and 34 define a parallelogram type linkage and the frames are preferably parallel but need not be. The hook plates 36 as shown in Figure 3 have hooks 36A which respective ly engage pins extending between the lug pairs 20 and 24 as shown in Figure 1, and guide plates or fingers 36B whilst the eye plates 38 respectively engage the lug pairs 26 and 30 and are coupled thereto by fixing pins passing through aligned apertures in the lugs and connecting plates.A brace bar 40 extends between the arms 34A and 34B of the lower A-frame, and an additional hooking plate 42 extends from bar 40 so that its hooked end engages a pin extending between the lugs of lug pair 28.
Links 44 couple the ends of arms 32B and 34B and 32A and 34A respectively, the links 44 being pivotally connected to such arms.
The hydraulic ram 46 is pivotally connected between the bar 40, and the forward end of frame 32.
The crown side of the piston as shown at 46 is pressurised with hydraulic fluid to enable the effective length of the ram to be increased, thereby, when the mounting arrangement is coupled as shown in Figure 1, to lift the forward ends of frames 32 and 34, and thereby to lift the plough 16 clear of the ground for transportation. Release of the hydraulic pressure in the crown side of ram 46 enables the plough 16 by its own weight to fall back to the position shown in Figure 2 wherein the bottom edge of the plough engages the ground for the clearing of snow and the like.
The plough 16 is connected to the mounting arrangement via a vertical steel channel bar 48 which has top and bottom lugs 50 and 52 defining vertical pivotal connections 54 and 56, whilst brackets 58 and 60 on the end of the arms 32 and 34 define pivot axes 62 and 64 so that in fact bar 48 is coupled to arms 32 and 34 via universal joints enabling the lifting and lowering of the arms without changing the anguiarity of the plough 16 to the ground, and also enabling the slewing of the plough about the axes 54 and 56 to alter its attitude in relation to the fore and aft direction of the vehicle. It is to be noted that a coupling bar 66 connected between the frame 34 and the plough may be used to keep the plough in fixed angle in relation to the fore and aft direction of the vehicle.Bar 66 may be of adjustable length by being telescopic so that the angularity of the plough in relation to the fore and aft direction of the vehicle can be set to suit snow conditions. The greater the plough angle, the less the swept width of the plough, which allows for vehicles of different width to use the same plough.
The universal joints 54, 62 and 56, 64 may comprise rubber shock absorbing bushings, and these may be employed in the joints coupling the bar 66 to the plough and frame 34.
By coupling the plough to the standard frame 14 via a parallelogram type linkage 32,34, a number of advantages are achieved including that the correct movement between the plough blade and the vehicle on an undulating road surface is achieved. This is important in that the ploughs are usually pushed by gritting vehicles, and as such vehicles progressively discharge their load of grit, the height of the fixing pins on the standard frame varies between the full loaded and unloaded condition of the vehicle. The use of the parallelogram type linkage means that the plough operates at the correct attitude in relation to the road.
In order to disconnect the attachment from the standard frame 14, the pins in lug pairs 26 and 30 are removed, in order to free the eye plates 38, and then the rod side of piston and cylinder device 46 is pressurised, for example using relatively low pressure gas, which may be supplied from a hydrogas type hydraulic accumulator which may be mounted on one of the frames 32 and 34, the piston and cylinder device 46 is contracted, and as the plough 16 is relatively massive compared to the weight of the arms 32,34, with this contraction of the ram 46, the arms 32,34 are raised as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, unhooking the hook plates 36 and 42 from the fixing pins in lug pairs 20,24 and 28 whereby the mounting arrangement is disconnected from the standard mounting plate 14, and the tractor vehicle can be driven rearwards leaving the mounting arrangement with the plough. It may be necessary also to uncouple hydraulically the vehicle from the ram 46.
When it is desired to re-couple the arms 32,34 of the vehicle 10, the arms 32,34 are lowered and the vehicle is driven into position, so that at least one of the pins of lugs 20, 24, 28 is engaged by the associated plate 36B and continued advance of the vehicle effects squaring up of the plough if the plough and vehicle are not initially in alignment until all the hook plates 36B (and 42B) are in position to engage the pins between the lug pairs 20, 24 and 28.
Any hydraulic coupling as may be necessary is made and then the ram is powered to lower the hooks 36A (42A) onto their pins and finally the fixing pins are inserted through the lug pairs 26 and 30 and the eye plates now located there-between to complete the coupling. The operation is simple and effective.
The link bars 44 ensure that when the arms 32 and 34 are raised to the disconnected position shown in Figure 2, the arms 32 and 34 will remain in the correct geometric relationship enabling the rapid reconnection of the arms to the standard frame.
It will be appreciated that if any hydraulic coupings are required to be made between the vehicle and ram 46, then such couplings will be self sealing when disconnected.
It is possible that the ram 46 may be operated by means of a hand pump, but as explained herein it is preferred that the ram 46 be a double acting ram or in an alternative arrangement, a spring device could be provided to close a single acting ram to perform the same function as the supply of low pressure gas to the ram 46 as explained herein. The spring would therefore contract the ram 46 and effect raising of the arms 32 and 34 as explained with reference to Figure 2. When low pressure gas is however used on the rod side of the piston cylinder device 46, pressure on that side of the ram will help to stop the plough bouncing when it is driven at too high a speed.
It is necessary to have positive connection of the mounting arrangement with at least some of the lug pairs on the mounting frame to retain the plough on the vehicle when in use and when during transportation. It is preferably to use the bottom two lug pairs 26,30 for this purpose as it is at these locations where the majority of the thrust (from the bottom rubber or steel edge of the plough in contact with the snow or road) is applied to the vehicle.
In an alternative arrangement, instead of using the links 44, there may be an intermediate mounting plate to which the ends of the arms 32 and 34 are connected pivotally, through, for example, eyes and lugs, and in the opposite side of the said plate would be provided hooks such as hooks 36, and eyes such as eyes 38. The plate would be permanently connected to the frames 32 and 34, and the advantage of this arrangement is that such a plate could be fitted to existing ploughs already in operators' possession.
The disadvantage of this arrangement is that it increases the overall length of the mounting arrangement and therefore increases the overhanging front axle loading on the vehicle when the plough is being carried in the raised position.
Although the arrangement described illustrates three hook plates 36 and 42 connected to three of the fixing pins of three of the lug pairs of the standard mounting frame, with two eyes connected at lug pairs 26 and 30, it is to be appreciated that this is not intended to limit the invention to the utilisation of these particular fixing pins, as other fixing pins could be used as required.
In an alternative arrangementforthe raising of the ends of the frames 30,32 when the mounting arrangement is disconnected from the vehicle, a screw jack with a castor wheel may be employed, the castor wheel reacting against the ground as the screw jack is turned to press the castor wheel downwardly, and the arms being lifted by reaction.
When a spring device is used for contracting the ram 46, this device may be in the form of a pair of springs at respective sides of the hydraulic cylinder.
Instead of coil springs for retracting the jack a hydracushion may be used, which is a device comprising a flexible enclosure containing oil connected to the side of the ram pressurization of which will cause retraction of same. The enclosure is contained in a balloon which is pressurised with gas so that the gas pressure is experienced and the oil in the enclosure pressurising said side of the ram always tending to contract same. When the plough is disconnected, the pressure on the ram lifts the arms facilitating subsequent hook in of the plough.
Also, the maintenance of the pressure in the ram by the hydracushion prevents or limits "plough bounce" in operation.
