Abstract
A door seal comprises a resilient elongate sealing member (1) having three limbs (3,4,5), one (5) of said limbs is secured along one side of the gap between door and frame by means of securing member (2), a second one (3) of said limbs rests on the opposite side of the gap and the third (4) limb extends into the gap between door and door frame. The second (3) and third (4) limbs are disposed at an acute angle so as to act as a lever which biases the edge of the second limb into sealing contact. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Outwardly opening door seal
The present invention relates to a door seal and, in particular, to a door seal for use in sealing the gap between the hinged sides of an open out' door and a door frame for outward opening doors.
Conventional seals for sealing the gap between the hinged sides of an 'open out' door and a door frame comprise a strip of resilient material which is secured along one edge to either the door or the door frame on the side thereof to which the door opens. The opposite free edge of the seal rests on the edge of the other side of the gap so that the seal bridges the gap. The resiliency of the materials biases the free edge of the seal into sealing contact with the edge of the other side of the gap thus preventing draughts.
Unfortunately, this type of door seal cannot easily accommodate variations in the position of the door relative to the door frame caused by variations in the size, shape and mounting of the hinge. The effect of this is that the free edge of the seal is not always in full sealing contact with the edge of the side of the gap opposite that to which the seal is secured.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a door seal for sealing the gap between the hinged side of an 'open out' door and a door frame in which the sealing edge of the door is maintained is sealing contact with the edge of the side of the gap opposite that to which the seal is secured.
According to the present invention there is provided a door seal for use in sealing the gap between the hinged sides of a door and a door frame comprising a resilient elongate sealing member which in section defines three limbs, each connected at one end to the other two, and a securing member, wherein in use a first one of said limbs is secured along one side of said gap by means of said securing member, a second one of said limbs rests on the edge of the side of the gap opposite that to which the sealing member is secured and the third one of said limbs extends into the gap between door and foor frame, the second and third limbs being disposed at an acute angle with respect to each other so that the third limb bears against the edge face of the said opposite side of the gap and acts as a lever which biases the edge of the second limbs into sealing contact with the edge of the said opposite side of the gap.
Preferably, the said first limb is secured to the door and the said second limb rests on the edge of the hinged side of the frame.
Preferably, the securing means comprises an aluminium extrusion which is adapted to be secured along one side of the said gap and to clamp the said first limb therebetween.
Preferably, the sealing member is comprised of rubber or a resilient plastics material.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows an end view of a door seal embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 shows an end view of a door seal which may be used with the door seal of Fig.
1 around the other side of the door from the hinged side; and
Fig. 3 shows a section through a door comprising the door seals of Figs. 1 and 2 mounted in a door frame.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings there is shown an end view of a door seal embodying the present invention comprising a sealing member 1 and a securing member 2, both of which are elongate and of uniform section throughout. The sealing member 1 is comprised of a resilient material, such as plastics or rubber, and has, when viewed at and end thereof, three limbs 3,4 and 5 each connected at one end to the other two.
Limbs 3 and 4 define between them an acute angle and the end of limb 3 comprises a bearing face 6 which is capable in use of bearing against a surface and forming a sealing contact therewith. Limb 5 comprises an outwardly projecting lip portion 7 which serves to engage with a complementary lip portion 8 of the securing member 2. A plurality of holes (not shown) are provided in the securing member 2 to receive screws or nails to allow it to be secured to a surface. The securing member 2 is comprised of aluminium. The lip portion 7 of the sealing member 1 engages under the lip portion 8 of the securing member 2, and as such in use is clamped between the lip portion 8 and the surface to which the securing member 2 is secured.
Referring to Fig. 2 there is shown an end view door seal which may be used to complement the door seal of the present invention around the sides of a door other than the hinged side. The door seal comprises a sealing member 9 and a securing member 10, both of which are elonate and of uniform section throughout. The sealing member 9 is comprised of a resilient material, such as rubber or plastics and has when viewed at an end thereof two limbs 11,12 disposed at an obtuse angle with respect to each other. Limb 11 comprises an outwardly projecting lip portion 13 which serves to engage a complementary lip portion 14 of the securing member 10. In this respect the lip portion 13 and securing member 10 are identical to the lip portion 7 and securing member 2 of the door seal embodying the present invention. Again, the securing member 10 is comprised of aluminium. The end of limb 12 comprises a bearing face 15 which is capable in use of bearing against a surface and forming a sealing contact therewith.
Referring now to Fig. 3 the operation of the outward opening door seals of Figs. 1 and 2 will be described with reference first to the door seal of Fig. 1.
In use the sealing member 1 is positioned such that limb 4 extends into the gap 16 between the hinged sides of an 'open out' door 17 and door frame 18. Limbs 3 and 5 bridge the gap 16 on the side thereof to which the door opens, limb 5 being secured to the door 17 by the securing member 2 and limb 3 engaging through bearing face 6 against the surface of the door frame 18.
When the door 17 is opened the distance between the door 17 and door frame 18 increases. As this occurs the limb 5 which is secured to the door pulls the limb 3 towards the edge of the door frame 18 and pulls the limb 4 upward towards the top of the gap 16. However, because of its length the limb 4 remains within the gap 16 and acts to prevent the sealing member from being dislocated.
There is little if any positive sealing action provided by the bearing surface 6 as it tends to be pulled away from the door frame 18, but this does not matter whilst the door is open.
As the door 17 is closed the gap 16 narrows and the limb 4 is pushed against the edge face 19 of the door frame 18. Being comprised of a resilient material the limb 4 tends to bend about the point where it joins limb 3 and 5 and exerts a levering action on them both. Limb 5 being secured by the securing means 2 is unable to move and thus tends to push the limb 4 into the gap. However, the levering action does act on limb 3 and biases it towards the frame 18. The effect of this is to asure that the bearing face of limb 3 is pushed up against the door frame in full sealing contact therewith.
The sealing member 9 is secured by means of the securing member 10 along the edge of the door 17 opposite the hinged side thereof and on the side of the door 17 to which it opens. The width of the sealing member 9 is such that it bridges the gap 20 between the door 17 and the door frame 18 so that the bearing face 15 rests against the door frame.
When the door 17 is closed it brings the bearing face 15 into contact with the door frame 18 and the natural resiliency of the sealing member 11 ensures that the bearing face is biased into close and sealing contact therewith. The sealing member may be made of any other suitable metal or plastic.
