Abstract

A greetings card adapted to be formed into a cylindrical tube with pictures printed erect in relation to the tube when stood upright on its cylindrical base edge and having at least one part (14) which is partly cut out so as to project laterally from the erected tube. The cylinder may be formed by engaging tongue 10 with slot 11. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Greetings cards This invention relates to greeting cards such as cards for birthdays, Valentines Day, Christmas wedding anniversaries and postcards.
Such cards are commonly made in one rectangular piece of trimmed card.
It has been known to make greetings cards from blanks much larger than a normal rectangular greeting card, the blank being scored across two or more lines and provided with means for connecting parts together to form a triangular or quadrilateral tube display adapted to lie on a table horizontally. These have not found much commercial acceptance partly because of the extra cost of card and partly because they are not very attractive.
According to the present invention we provide a greetings card with a suitable design and means for fixing one part to another in such a manner as to form a tube characterised by (a) the card is a one piece flat card free from fold lines so that it forms a cylindrical tube (b) at least one part is cut or perforated partly around an area which projects laterally outwardly from the tube when so formed (c) the picture is partly on the tube and partly on the projecting piece (d) the picture is the right way up when the tube is stood on end on its circular base edge.
The card may be approximately rectangular without any fold lines and provided with a slit at one edge and a tab to engage in the slot at the op posite edge.
The card may have the projecting parts as a mi nor area of the card.
Alternatively the card may be characterised by marginal parts, parts of which can be separated from the card by cuts or perforations while other parts of the margins have none and therefore re main attached to the card whereby separated parts of the margin can be bent back to serve as a skeletal tubular support while the part within the margin remains substantially flat and erect.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying diagrammatic drawings wherein Figures 1 and 3 show to greetings cards as sold in flat condition, Figure 2 shows the card of Figure 1 as erected by the recipient in tubular form.
Figure 4 shows a greeting card made in accord ance with the invention in flat condition as it will be sold; and Figure 5 shows the card in erected condition.
In Figures 1 and 3 the card is substantially rectangular and is provided with a graphic design and wording. One short edge of the card has a project ing tab 10 adapted to engage in a slit 11 near the opposite short edge so as to form a tube as shown in Figure 2 which stands on end with the picture and wording displayed in upright positions. The top long edge of the card has a projection 12 representing a cap carrying a bobble 14. The bobble is cut out around the lower part of its periphery from 15 to 16 so that on erection it stands out from the tubular form.
The card shown in Figure 3 includes the picture of a bird in which the neck, head and beak are cut out but leaving the base of the neck attached so that the cut out parts project out laterally from the tubular shape on erection.
Such cut out projections can take innumerable shapes according to the design represented.
Instead of tabs the edges may be attached together by adhesive means.
The card is a single sheet of flexible stiff card.
Any number of projecting cut out parts may be provided e.g. the wings of a bird or angel or the ends of a bow tie.
The rectangular greeting card 10 of Figures 3, 4 and 5 is provided with a suitable picture and/or greeting words and is provided with a margin 11.
Weakening lines in the form of perforations are provided around the card except at the top and bottom edges at their middle parts 13, 14.
One side margin has a slit 15 and the other side margin has perforations 16, 17 whereby pieces 18, 19 can be readily removed thereby leaving a middle tab 20.
The marginal parts on either side of the middle parts 13, 14 can be bent back to form a skeletal tube and fixed in place by engaging the tab 20 in the slit 15.
The card can then stand erect as shown in Figure 5 with the rectangular card remaining flat i.e. in a single plane. The middle part of the card is attached to the tube and the remainder form two areas projecting laterally from the erected tube.
