Abstract
An alarm device is contained in a housing that can be attached to the body of a freezer or refrigerator. The alarm will emit a single high pitched note at regular intervals if the door or lid is not completely closed. The alarm may be powered by an internal dry battery or by mains electricity. If required the alarm signal can alternatively be either a continuous buzz and/or a visual display. Means are provided to isolate the alarm for maintenance purposes such as de-frosting. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Alarm device for freezer and refrigerator cabinet doors
This invention relates to an alarm device for freezer and refrigerator cabinet doors,
Domestic freezer and refrigerator cabinets are, in general, manufactured with either vertically hinged side mounted doors or horizontally hinged top mounted lids, both of these types of cabinets can be accidentally left with the doors slightly open for long periods of time, this situation is often difficult to detect and can result in the interior temperature rising, causing damage to the food contained therein, which can be both costly and a danger to health.
According to the present invention there is provided an alarm device which makes an audible and/or visual indication that the door is not completely closed. The device is contained in a small box with a separate contact plate, both of which are attached to the outside of the freezer or refrigerator, the box being mounted on the cabinet body and the contact plate on the edge of the door or lid or the other way round if more convenient.
A specific embodiment of the invention will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 illustrates in perspective a vertical freezer or refrigerator with the alarm device mounted in a convenient position, the contact plate is also shown in position on the edge of the door.
Figure 2 shows the alarm device and contact plate at a larger scale.
Figure 3 shows a typical example of the internal parts of the alarm device, the lid being removed.
Referring to the drawings, the box containing the alarm is attached to the cabinet of the freezer of refrigerator, the contact plate is attached to the edge of the door or lid by means of magnets, suction pads, adhesive or any other means (none shown), additionally the device can be built in to the freezer or refrigerator during manufacture.
The alarm device consists of a small box 1 containing a power source, this can be a dry battery 2 as illustrated or alternatively a mains electricity supply. As the contact plate 6 is moved away from the alarm box, when the door is opened, the switch 5 allows current to flow to the alarm generator 4 via the timer 3 which enables the alarm to be adjusted from a single high pitched note emitted periodically to a continuous buzz. Additionally the audible alarm can be replaced or supplimented by a light, giving a visual warning.
1. An alarm device comprising an alarm generator, a power source, a timer and a switch, all of which are contained in a small box which can be attached to the cabinet body and a contact plate which can be attached to the edge of the door or lid of a freezer or refrigerator.
2. An alarm device as claimed in Claim 1 that can be attached to a freezer or refrigerator by means of magnets, suction pads, adhesive or any other means.
3. An alarm device as claimed in Claim 1 wherein a single high pitched note at regular intervals is emitted when the freezer or refrigerator door or lid is not completely closed.
4. An alarm device as claimed in Claim 3 wherein the single alarm note can be varied to a continuous buzz.
5. An alarm device as claimed in Claim 3 wherein the audible alarm can be substituted by or added to a visual warning light.
6. An alarm device as claimed in Claim 3 and
Claim 5 wherein the audible and visual alarms can be isolated for maintenance purposes.
7. An alarm device substantially as described wherein with reference to Figures 1-3 of the accompanying drawings.
