Abstract

In apparatus for filling the barrel 2 of a sealant gun from a container 18 of sealant, the barrel 2 is rigidly mounted in a support 1 including a filler plate 8 which has a lip 12 engaging the open end of the barrel 2. The container 18 is movable upwardly using a mechanical or hydraulic jack 15 rigidly fixed to the support 1. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for filling sealant gun This invention relates to apparatus for filling a sealant gun with sealant. The term 'sealant' as used herein includes polysulphide, polyurethane, epoxy grouts and other similar products.
Hitherto, sealants for filling expansion joints, etc have normally been gunned in using a sealant gun. These sealant guns are filled with sealant from a container. In order to fill a sealant gun, a filler plate is used. The filler plate is usually circular and has a diameter which enables it to fit exactly into the opening of the container housing the sealant. The filler plate has a central hole through it. The hole has around it a lip which fits into the open end of the sealant gun. Once the lip of the plate has been inserted into the open end of the gun, the gun and plate are forced downwardly by hand into the container. As the plate fits tightly the sealant is forced upwardly through the hole in the plate and into the gun barrel.
Filling of the gun barrel requires downward vertical hand pressure. Often the downward pressure is not vertical, resulting in the lip coming out of the open end of the gun causing spillage of the sealant. The filler plate can also become dislodged and it may sink into the container requiring removal. In general, the process requires a skillful and strong person.
The process is also messy and sealant is generally wasted due to spillage. The costs of filling expansion joints etc are therefore higher than they might be because of the labour and time required to fill a gun by this method each time it is emptied.
It is an object of this invention to provide apparatus for filling a sealant gun and which will reduce the above problems.
According to the present invention there is provided apparatus for filling a sealant gun from a container of sealant, the apparatus comprising a filler plate, retaining means for retaining the barrel of the gun in fixed relation to the apparatus and in sealing engagement with the filler plate, support means for supporting the container of sealant, and filler means for causing the gun barrel and the container to move axially relative to each other to fill the barrel with sealant.
The invention further provides apparatus for filling a sealant gun comprising a base secured to a support post providing a depending har adapated to have a filler plate secured to its lower free end and providing means for retaining a sealant gun located substantially vertical in use adjacent the bar.
The filler plate is preferably releasable and interchangeable.
Advantageously a jack on the base carries a support plate for a sealant container, and the depending ann is braced from the post.
In order that the invention may be more fully understood an embodiment thereof will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a side view of the embodiment.
The drawing shows apparatus, generally indicated at 1, for filling a sealant gun 2 with sealant from a container of sealant 18.
The apparatus includes a support post 3 secured at one end at right angles to a base 4.
The base 4 consists base plate 5 supported on feet 6. At the opposite end of the post 3 to the base 4 is secured an arm 7 at right angles to the post 3 and parallel to the base plate 5. Arm 7 supports a filler plate 8 parallel to the base plate 5 by means of a depending support bar 9. Support bar 9 is shorter than and parallel to post 3. A brace 10 fixed halfway along the length of the support post 9 and to the post 3 provides the necessary rigidity to the filler plate 8.
The filler plate 8 is circular and has a central hole 11 therethrough. The filler plate 8 is secured to its support bar 9 between the hole 11 and its outer circumferential edge by means of a suitable securing bolt 19, or the like. The filler plate 8 is selected to have a diameter which enables it to fit neatly and tightly into the open end of the container 18.
The hole 11 in the filler plate 8 has a peripheral lip 12 for locating the open end of the sealant gun 2.
The arm 7 is a square section bar having an L-shaped recess 13 therein near its end opposite the end secured to the post 3.
The apparatus 1 further includes a sealant container support plate 14 and a jack 15 which supports the container support plate 14 and is adapted to maintain the plate 14 parallel to the base plate 5 when raised.
In use, the open end of the sealant gun 2 is placed over the lip 12 around the hole 11 in the filler plate 8, and the gun 2 is fixed in position between the filler plate 8 and the arm 7 by inserting plunger 16 of the sealant gun 2 into the L-shaped recess 13. As the apparatus 1 is operated vertically, and to ensure that the gun 2 is vertical and parallel to the post 3, a spacer 1 7 is used. The spacer 1 7 is a right angular bracket secured to the filler plate support post 9 at the end secured to the arm 7 such that the spacer 17 fits in the angle between the post 9 and the arm 7. The length of the leg of the spacer 1 7 parallel to the arm 7 is such that the barrel of the gun 2 is vertical.
The sealant gun 2 once filled can be used in conventional manner to fill expansion joints, etc, with sealants. The sealants commonly used are polysulphide, polyurethane and epoxy grouts. Two part sealants are firstly thoroughly mixed in the container 18 before being filled into the barrel of a sealant gun. When the sealant is ready, the container 18 is placed onto the container support plate 14 supported by the jack 15. In this position the container 18 is underneath the filler plate 8.
The container 18 is then lifted by the jack 15, the filler plate 8 thus being inserted into the container 18. As the container 18 is raised, the sealant is forced into the gun barrel through the hole 11 until the barrel is full.
Apparatus in accordance with the invention provides a means for easily and quickly filling sealant into sealant guns, and it reduces spillage and waste of sealant often encountered in this operation.
The apparatus can be constructed as a robust unit which can be operated by a single person without requiring a high degree of physical labour or skill as is required by hitherto proposed apparatus for filling sealant guns.
In alternative embodiments, the apparatus can be adapated for various sizes of sealant guns, and the filler plate can be varied for various shapes and sizes of containers. Also the method of interchanging the filler plates as well as the manner of locating the sealant gun in the apparatus can differ.
Support for the filler plate can be changed and means for lifting the container can be altered. Indicators can be included for informing an operator when the gun barrel is full and when the container is empty. The jack can be mechanically or hydraulically operated.
