Abstract

A container comprises a base portion (10) divided into a plurality of components especially suited to the storage of medication in pill or tablet form, and a closure assembly having a plurality of closures (31) for sealing the compartments respectively and having hinge means (30) common to at least two of said closures capable of securing said closures to said base portion. Preferably the hinge means comprises a central spine (30) from which the closures (31) extend in pairs, one of each pair extending away from the other, the central spine being attached at 36 by a snap connection along the longitudinal centre of the base portion, which has its compartments arranged in pairs on each side of the longitudinal centre. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Container The invention relates to a container more particularly to a container divided into a number of compartments especially suited to the storage of medication in pill or tablet form.
According to the invention there is provided a container comprising a base portion divided into a plurality of compartments, and a closure assembly having a plurality of closures for sealing the compartments respectively and having hinge means common to at least two of said closures capable of securing said closures to said base portion.
Preferably the hinge means comprises a central spine from which the closures extend in pairs, one of each pair extending away from the other, the central spine being attached by a snap connection along the longitudinal centre of the base portion having its compartments arranged in pairs on each side of the longitudinal centre.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container having eight compartments arranged in four pairs; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the container with the closure assembly removed; Figure 3 is an underplan view of the closure assembly removed from its base shown in smaller scale; Figure 4 is a perspective view of the closure assembly only; Figure 5 is an exploded side view of the container; Figure 6 is a section taken on the line A-A of Figure 5; and Figure 7 is an underplan view of the container.
The container comprises a base portion 10 having four exterior walls, viz two longitudinal side walls 11, 12 and two end walls 13, 14, closely spaced interior longitudinal walls 15, 16, parallel to said side walls, transverse dividing walls 17, 17', 18, 18', 19, 19', the central walls 18, 18' of which are bridged by a strengthening piece 20 so as to form a continuous central wall, and a base formed of two portions 21, 22 completing the bottoms of the compartments so formed in two groups of four.
The closure portion comprises a hinge spine 30 formed integrally with eight individual closures 31, which extend in pairs from the spine, one of each pair extending away from the other. Each closure is provided with a raised rim 32 which closely fits the rim of the respective compartment. A snap fit is provided by a protrusion 33 which locates be hind a cooperating protrusion 34 on the rim of the compartment. The closures are connected by thin strip portions 35 so that each closure can be inde pendently hinged.
The spine 30 locates within the top of the recess formed by the spaced interior longitudinal walls 15, 16 and is secured to the base portion by means of lugs 36 at the ends of the recess in groups of four. A further two lugs 37 are provided to retain the spine 30 in the region of the strengthening piece 20 on which the spine rests at its centre.
Desirably the closures are moulded with indicia, in normal letter or in Braille, to indicate the days of the week plus an 'eighth' day.
The construction affords simplicity of manufacture in that a multi-compartmented container may be produced by making the base portion and the closure assembly each as a one-piece injection moulding.
1. A container comprising a base portion divided into a plurality of compartments and a closure assembly having a plurality of closures for sealing the compartments respectively and having hinge means common to at least two of said closures capable of securing said closures to said base portion.
2 A container as claimed in claim 1, wherein the hinge means comprises a central spine from which the closures extend in pairs, one of each pair extending away from the other, the central spine being attached by a snap action along the longitudinal centre of the base portion having its compartments arranged in pairs on each side of the longitudinal centre.
3. A container as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein each closure is provided with a raised rim which closely fits the rim of the respective compartment.
4. A container as claimed in claim 3, wherein each closure is provided with a protrusion which locates in the closed position behind a protrusion formed on the rim of the compartment.
5. A container as claimed in claim 1 - 4, wherein the closures are each connected by a thin strip portion which is flexible so that each closure can be independently hinged.
6. A container as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the compartments of said base portion are defined by two exterior longitudinal walls and two end walls, closely spaced interior longitudinal walls parallel to said side walls, transverse dividing walls, and a base formed of two portions completing the bottoms of the compartments so formed in two groups of four.
7. A container as claimed in claim 6 when appended to claim 2, wherein the central spine locates within the top of a recess formed by the closely spaced interior walls and is secured to the base portion by means of lugs at the end of the recess.
8. A container as claimed in claim 7, wherein the lugs are deformable so that the central spine can engage the lugs with a snap fit.
9. A container as claimed in claims 1 - 8, wherein the base portion and the closure assembly are each formed as a one-piece injection moulding.
