Description

SPECIFICATION Ventilator for use in a building structure This invention relates to a ventilator for use in a building structure, and also to a building structure.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a ventilator for use in a building structure of the type having an inner wall and an outer wall with a cavity therebetween, a ceiiing extending to an upper edge of the inner wall, and a floor extending to a lower edge of the inner wall, said ventilator comprising an elongate member adapted to provide ventilation through a gap between the floor and the inner wall or between the ceiling and the inner wall.
Advantageously the elongate member is an elongate strip provided with a plurality of apertures through which air can flow.
Preferably a flange is provided extending transversely from one edge of the elongate member. In use, the flange may engage the ceiling or the floor.
Desirably the ventilator is provided with means adapted to receive the inner wall. The means adapted to receive the inner wall may comprise a formation having a recess, the inner wall being received in the recess; conveniently the recess may be U-shaped. The formation may be disposed on an opposite edge of the elongate member to the flange.
Preferably, the means adapted to receive the inner wall serves to secure the member to the inner wall.
A projection may be provided on the formation for defining an upper or lower limit for a surface layer such as plaster which can be applied over the inner wall. When the ventilator is being used to ventilate between the inner wall and the ceiling, then the projection would define an upper edge of the surface layer, and when the ventilator is being used to ventilate between the inner wall and the floor, then the projection would define a lower edge of the surface layer. The surface layer may comprise part of the inner wall itself, for example, when the inner wall is made of plaster.
The ventilator may be provided with a stop member against which floor covering such as carpet can abut. The stop member is preferably provided on an end of the flange remote from the elongate member.
Conveniently the ventilator comprises a plastics material, and the ventilator may be formed by extrusion.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a building structure comprising an outer wall and an inner wall having a cavity therebetween, a ceiling extending to an upper edge of the inner wall, a floor extending to a lower edge of the inner wail, and ventilating means, wherein a gap is provided between the upper edge and the ceiling and/or between the lower edge and the floor, and said ventilating means is disposed in the gap between the ceiling and the wall and/or in the gap between the floor and the wall to provide ventilation through the or each gap.
Advantageously the ventilating means comprises a ventilator as described above. In particular, it is preferred that the ventilating means comprises an elongage member adapted to provide ventilation through the or each gap.
Advantageously also the outer wall comprises a brick layer and the inner wall comprises a lining layer.
Preferably insulation is provided in said cavity. Desirably, spacing means is provided to space said insulation from the outer wall or the inner wall to provide a ventilation path between the insulation and the wall.
In one embodiment the inner wall comprises plasterboard, and the outer wall comprises a brick layer. In this embodiment the spacing means may comprise a plurality of battens which can be secured to the outer wall in order to space the insulation from the outer wall so that air may flow between the outer and inner walls.
A surface layer such as plaster may be arranged on the inner wall so that the inner wall lies between the outer wall and the surface layer.
In an alternative embodiment the outer wall comprises a brick layer and the inner wall comprises a plaster layer, the brick layer being spaced from the plaster layer by a spacer member which may be a corrugated panel. In this embodiment air can flow through spaces which are defined between the corrugated panel and the outer wall.
A skirting board may be provided extending adjacent the lower edge of the inner wall.
When the gap is provided between the lower edge and the floor it is preferred that the ventilating means is disposed between the inner wall and the skirting board, and the floor.
Preferably the gap is provided both between the inner wall and the ceiling, and between the inner wall and the floor; a separate ventilator can be provided for ventilating both between the inner wall and the ceiling and between the inner wall and the floor. In this way a circulation of air through the gap between the floor and the wall, through the cavity, and through the gap between the ceiling and the wall can be achieved by convection.
The ventilator and building structure of the present invention is particularly useful in the refurbishment of old brick walls to which an inner wall in the form of a new insulated lining is added. The ventilation provided by the ventilator helps to prevent condensation between the brick wall and the lining.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective part sectional view of one embodiment of a building structure according to the invention having a ventilator for ventilating between a ceiling and a wall and between a floor and the wall; Figure 2 is a section on lines 2-2 of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a perspective part sectional view of another embodiment of a building structure according to the invention having a ventilator for ventilating between a ceiling and a wall and between a floor and the wall; and Figure 4 is a section on lines 4-4 of Figure 3.
In Figures 1 and 2, a building structure generally designated 1 comprises an inner wall 2 of plasterboard, and an outer brick wall 3.
A plurality of timber battens 5 are secured to the outer wall 3 and extend vertically with respect thereto (only one batten 5 is visible in Figure 1). In Figure 1, only the upper and lower portions of the walls 2 and 3 have been shown.
A cavity 6 is provided between the inner wall 2 and the outer wall 3, and the space between the battens 5 and the inner wall 2 is filled with cavity wall insulating foam 7. The insulating foam 7 does not fill a space 5a between adjacent battens 5 so that air can flow through this space.
A surface layer 8 of plaster is provided on the surface of the inner wall 2 so that the inner wall 2 lies between the surface layer 8 and the outer wall 3.
A ceiling 9 extends to the inner wall 2 substantially transverse thereto. The ceiling may, for example, comprise plasterboard.
A gap 10 is provided between the ceiling 9 and an upper edge 2a of the inner wall 2; ventilating means in the form of a ventilator generally designated 11 is disposed in the gap 10 between the ceiling 9 and the upper edge 2a.
The ventilator 11 comprises an elongate strip 12 having a plurality of apertures 13 through which air can flow.
A flange 14 extends along an edge 12a of the strip 12 parallel to the longitudinal axis of the strip 12, the flange 14 being transverse to the strip 12. The flange 14 engages the ceiling 9 so that air cannot flow between the flange 14 and the ceiling 9.
An elongate formation 15 having a Ushaped recess extends along an opposite edge 12b of the strip 12 to the flange 14.
The upper edge 2a of the inner wall 2 is received in the U-shaped recess of the formation 15; this serves to secure the ventilator 11 in position in the gap 10 between the upper edge 2a and the ceiling 9.
A projection in the form of a ledge 16, secured to the formation 15, extends parallel to the longitudinal axis of the strip 12 and defines an upper edge 8a of the surface layer 8.
A floor 20 extends substantially transverse to the inner wall 2. The floor 20 may, for example, comprise timber floor boards.
A gap 21 is provided between the floor 20 and a lower edge 2b of the inner wall 2; ventilating means in the form of a ventilator generally designated 22 is disposed in the gap 21 between the floor 20 and the lower edge 2b. The ventilator 22 comprises an elongate strip 23 having a plurality of apertures 24 through which air can flow.
A flange 25 extends along an edge 23a of the strip 23 parallel to the longitudinal axis of the strip, the flange 25 being transverse to the strip 23. The flange 25 engages the floor 20 so that air cannot flow between the flange 25 and the floor 20.
An elongate formation 26 having a Ushaped recess extends along an opposite edge 23b of the strip 23 to the flange 25.
The lower edge 2b of the inner wall 2 is received in the U-shaped recess of the formation 26; this serves to secure the ventilator 22 in position in the gap 21 between the lower edge 2b and the floor 20.
A projection in the form of a ledge 28, secured to the formation 26, extends parallel to the longitudinal axis of the strip 23 and defines a lower edge 8b of the surface layer 8.
A lower edge 29a of a skirting board 29 also rests upon the ledge 28.
A stop member 30 is attached to the end of the flange 25 remote from the strip 23.
The stop member 30 is arranged so that in use it has an acute angle with respect to the floor 20 so that a layer of carpet 31 can be tucked between the stop member 30 and the floor 20.
When the ventilator 11 or 22 is incorporated in a building structure during the construction thereof, it can be disposed over or under the inner wall 2 before the surface layer 8 is applied to the inner wall. The surface layer 8 can then be applied using the ledge 16 and/or 27 to define the upper edge 8a and/or the lower edge 8b of the surface layer 8.
An air flow path through the building structure 1 is shown by arrows A in Figure 1. Air can flow through the ventilator 22 into the space 5a between adjacent battens 5, and out of the space 5a through the ventilator 11. A steady air flow is maintained by convection.
Figures 3 and 4 show an alternative embodiment of building structure which is generally designated 40. Many of the parts of the building structure 40 are of substantially identical construction to the parts shown in Figure 1, and like parts have been designated with like reference numerals. In Figure 3 only the upper and lower parts of the building structure have been shown.
In Figure 3 the outer brick wall 3 is spaced from the inner wall 2 by a spacer in the form of a corrugated panel 41. The inner wall 2 is arranged so that there is no space between the inner wall 2 and the corrugated panel 41.
The inner wall 2 is made of plaster. The inner wall 2 is received in the U-shaped recesses of the elongate formations 15 and 26, and its upper edge is defined by the ledges 16 and 28.
An air flow path through the building structure 40 is shown by arrows B. Air can flow through the ventilator 22, into spaces 41a defined between the corrugated panel 41 and the outer wall 3, and through the ventilator 11. As with the embodiment shown in Figure 1, a steady air flow can be maintained by convection.
