Abstract

Controlling variable-speed gearing; facilitating changing speed.-In axially-moving rods having a resilient part adapted to yield in tension or compression upon excessive resistance being encountered, the resilient part is in the form of a single spring or rubber buffer connected to the rods by universal joints. The device is particularly applicable as a yielding coupling between the actuating and striker rods of motor-vehicle change-speed gears of the type operated by a gatechange lever or semi-automatic mechanism such as described in Specification 194,628, the universal joints allowing for temporary or permanent misalignment of the selector device and gear box. The actuating-rod 1, Fig. 1, is coupled to the striker rod 2 by Hooke's joints 3, 4, a rod 7, and telescopic members 5, 6 connected by a spring 8, which is secured to eye-bolts 9, 10 pivoted on screws 11, 12, and is so stiff as to yield appreciably only to positive resistance, such as clashing gears or clutches. The parts 5, 6 are prevented from relative rotation by grooves 5b and pins 6<a>, which may be replaced by the projecting head and end of the screw 12, or the parts 5, 6 may be non-circular. In a modification, the ends of the spring are bent axially and screw-threaded, one end being screwed into the part 6 and locked by a nut, and the other end passed through the base 5<a> and secured by nuts. In the form shown in Fig. 4, a rubber buffer 17 is held between a washer 18, seating on a nut 20 and a plug member 22, and a washer 19, seating on a shoulder of the rod 16 and a flange 21<a> of the casing 21, so that the buffer yields by compression for either direction of movement. Modified universal joints 14, 15 are shown. The casing 21 is barrel-shaped to allow for expansion of the buffer 17, which may comprise a series of rubber springs with or without interposed metal washers.
