Abstract

A structure such as a porous stone structure is described, which has its surface sealed against atmospheric depradations by an inhibitor which is applied to the structure and polymerises in situ at ambient temperature.

Description

SPECIFICATION Protected Structure The invention relates to a protected structure.
Structures such as buildings are often subject to atmospheric attack.
It is an object of the invention to seek to overcome this disadvantage.
According to the invention there is provided a structure having a porous surface structure sealed against the detrimental action of atmosphere, precipitation or condensation by an inhibitor which is ap plied in situ and polymerises at ambient temperature.
The inhibitor may be a solution comprising vinyl acetate which is dissolved in a carrier which may be a solvent or diluent.
A suitable solvent is toluol, with or without methylated spirit though other suitable solvents include ethyl alcohol in strengths of from 100% to 50%, benzene, toluene, acetone, carbon tetrachloride, trichlor ethylene, chloroform, ethyl acetate and butyl acetate.
Preferably, the inhibitor may comprise vinyl acetate (6 parts by weight), toluol (2 parts by weight) and methylated spirit (preferably industrial methylated spirit) (28 parts by weight) to give a total of 36, or 100%.
Alternatively, the inhibitor may have the following composition: Vinyl Acetate 80.00 grms Dibutyl Phthalate 1.55 grms Diethyl Phthalate 0.80 grms Methylated Spirit 500.00 grms 581.63 grms, 100% In a further embodiment, the inhibitor may have the following composition: Ether extractable materials 50.00 grms (8 oz) Dibutyl Phthalate 1.55 grms (4 oz) Diethyl Phthalate 0.80 grms (8 oz) Solvent 500 c.c. (- gallon) In a yet further embodiment, the inhibitor may have the following composition Solids content 37% Solvents 63% The main ingredient of the solids is a vinyl acetate polymer containg about 8% of its weight of ether extractible materials, such as plasticiser.
The solvent consists essentially of ethanol and an aromatic hydrocarbon, such as benzene.
In every embodiment the inhibitor forms a readily flowable liquid which is applicable by painting, spraying or other suitable means to a structure such as bricks, blocks or other building material, metal structures such a piles, joists, trusses, lintels, beams, bressemers or the like, wooden elements such as rafters, joists, floor boards, window and door frames, and porous structures in buildings say, such as acoustic tiles, panelling or the like. The inhibitor is also applicable to structures such as sculptures of metal, stone, polystyrene or the like which are particularly prone to attack when they are free-standing particularly outside in public places. The list of examples given is exemplary not exhaustive of the kind of structure to which the inhibitor is applicable. In every embodiment the liquid inhibitor is applied to the surface of the structure. The inhibitor permeates the porous surface of the structure and also polymerises in situ at ambient temperature to provide a closely adherent layer which does not occlude the surface topography of the structure while nevertheless binds the material of the structure so that it remains dimensionally stable and protects it against atmospheric attack. Thus, rain, etc, is shed from the surface of the structure, and any acids therein are prevented from attacking the material of the structure, which is thus preserved in its original form.
The invention extends to the inhibitor per se.
