Abstract
A racket, such as a badminton racket, includes a grip 4 having a rigidity gradient which enables energy accumulation in order to provide strong hitting force. The grip 4 has a flared tube 3a or a funnel-like part 5 which increases in diameter towards the rear end of the grip 4, said flared tube or funnel being covered by a foamed plastics material 41 covered by an outer cover 42 and causing the rigidity of the grip to increase towards the rear end of the grip 4. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A racket, such as a badminton racket
The present invention relates to a racket, such as a badminton racket, and more particularly relates to an improvement in the grip construction of a racket.
A badminton racket is in general comprised of an oval frame holding strings in tension and a shaft connected to the frame via a neck. The shaft takes the form of an elongate tube or rod made of fibre reinforced plastics (FRP) or metal, such as aluminium. The free end of the shaft is provided with a grip usually made of wood. An axial hole is made in the grip in order to accommodate a mass for weight adjustment.
In this conventional construction, the diameter of the shaft is much smaller than that of the wooden grip and rigidity of the wooden grip is very large.
Such an unbalanced combination causes excessive resistance to bending (rigidity) of the grip which impairs the accumuiation of elastic energy in the grip when hitting shuttles, i.e. flection of the grip.
Thus, the force applied to the shuttles is derived from elastic energy of the shaft only.
According to the present invention there is provided a racket comprising an oval frame holding strings in tension, a shaft coupled to the frame via a neck and a grip covering the free end section of the shaft, in which the rigidity distribution in the grip including the end section of the shaft covered thereby has a gradient gradually rising toward the outer end of the grip.
Some embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of examples, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa plan view of a badminton racket to which the present invention is applied;
Figure 2 is a side view, partly in section, of one embodiment of the badminton racket in accordance with the present invention; and
Figure 3 is a side view, partly in section, of anothei embodiment of the badminton racket in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to Figure 1, a badminton racket includes an oval frame 1 holding strings in tension, such strings may be formed of gut, a shaft 3 connected to the frame 1 via a neck 2 and a hand grip 4 covering the free end section of the shaft 3. The shaft 3 takes the form of a thin, elongated tube made of FRP such as carbon fibre reinforced plastics or metal, such as aluminium.
As remarked above, the present invention is directed to the grip construction of such a badminton racket.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 2, the shaft 3 terminates at the grip end 4a of the grip 4. More specifically the end section 3a of the shaft 3 gradually diverges towards the grip end 4a. The grig 4 is made up of an inner sheath 41 directly covering the end section 3a of the shaft 3, an outer sheath 42 covering the inner sheath 41 and an end cap 43 attached to the free end of the grip 4 while closing the mouth at the end section of the shaft 3. The inner sheath 41 is made of foam polyurethane resin in order to reduce rigidity of the grip nose portion 4b.
The outer sheath 42 is usually made of leather. The end cap 43 may be formed in one piece with the inner sheath 41 during moulding of the latter, and may be also covered by the outer shell 42. In one typical example, the largest diameter of the end section 3a of the shaft 3 is 15 mm when the standard outer diameter of the shaft 3 is 7.6 mm.
The bore in the end section 3a of the shaft 3 may be either left blank or filled with foam resin.
The divergent construction of the end section 3a of the shaft 3 produces rigidity distribution with a gradient gradually rising towards the grip end.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 3, the end section 3a of the shaft 3 terminates at a position just past the grip nose portion 4b and a funnel-like reinforcement 5 follows next, which diverges towards the grip end 4a.
In an alternative, one or more FRP reinforcements may be embedded in either the inner or outer sheath in a manner such that rigidity distribution should have a gradient gradually rising towards the grip end.
In a further embodiment, density of the foam resin used for the inner sheath 41 may be adjusted along the axis of the grip 4 so that rigidity distribution should have a gradient gradually rising towards the grip end.
It will be appreciated that the invention can be applied to a tennis racket or a squash racket.
1. A racket comprising an oval frame holding strings in tension, a shaft coupled to the frame via a neck and a grip covering the free end section of the shaft, in which the rigidity distribution in the grip including the end section of the shaft covered thereby has a gradient gradually rising toward the outer end of the grip.
2. A racket as claimed in claim 1, in which the grip includes an inner sheath directly covering the end section of the shaft and made of foam synthetic resin.
3. A racket as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, in which the end section of the shaft diverges towards and terminates at the outer end of the grip.
4. A racket as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, in which the end section of the shaft terminates at a position just past the nose portion of the grip and is continued by a funnel-like reinforcement which diverges towards the outer end of the grip.
5. A racket as claimed in claim 2 or claims 3 or 4 when dependent upon claim 2, in which the inner sheath is provided with one or more reinforcement in such a manner that its rigidity gradually increases towards the outer end of the grip.
6. A racket as claimed in claim 2 or ciaims 3 or 4
