Abstract

216,662. Basset, J. May 2, 1923. Compound forms; hollow-ware. - A cask for fermentable liquids such as beer, consists of an outer wooden shell, 1, Figs. 2, 4 and 6, of thin staves hooped with iron and serving as a protective envelope for an aluminium or other metal lining 2 which is made by welding together two tub-shaped halves and is inserted from one end of the cask and expanded by pressure from within. A bung-hole bush 4 with a base 13 is welded or soldered in a circular aperture x left in the metal lining and is secured to the wooden casing by a separate plate 9, Fig. 2, screwed to the casing and having a polygonal aperture 22 fitting on the polygonal end of an inner sleeve 5 screwed into the bush 4 and engaging by means of packing 7 and an up-turned flange 6 with the base 13 of the bung-hole bush. In an alternative consruction the bung-hole bush is secured to the wooden casing by means of bosses 15, Fig. 4, fitting into notches in the casing in conjunction with a flange 14 integral with the bush and secured to the casing by screws. In this case the bush 4 is produced by chill-casting around the intermediate sleeve 5 which is of an ordinary corrodible hard metal, and relative movement between the bush and sleeve may be prevented by deforming the thread as at 12 by a hammer-blow. In a third modification shown in Fig. 6, the upturned flange is continued to form a lining 18 for the bung-hole bush and a thread 20 is formed on the outside of the sleeve 5 which is of ordinary design to take a hard metal cap 21 which holds in place a bung 19.
