Nozzles for producing whirling sprays.-A jet dispersal nozzle, more particularly for breaking up the water from outfall sluices so as to prevent disintegration of the riverhead, and applicable also to such purposes as purifying water &c., comprises an inlet portion A, a blade portion B adapted to form a forced vortex and an outlet portion D adapted to form a free spiral vortex by which a hollow expanding cone, of spray is formed at the outlet. The blades and chambers are so formed that the central portion of the water revolves at a higher velocity than the peripheral portion. For this purpose the pitch of the blades B becomes less as the distance from the axis increases. The blades may be mounted on a stream line body C, Fig. 1, or as shown in Fig. 6 on a ring C. The nozzle may be provided with one or more conical or similar shells E, Fig. 4, for dividing dither the forced vortex chamber, or both, into two or more annular chambers, the cones of spray from which may be formed either at the same or different angles. The nozzle may be provided with a stream line valve H, Fig. 9, of known form, the boss C being modified to embrace the operating member H of the valve.
