Abstract

216,515. Babcock & Wilcox Co., (Assignees of Harter, I., and Kohler, A. M.). May 25, 1923, [Convention date]. Refractory substances containing clay, e.g. kaolin, are obtained by moulding crude kaolin having a melting point between 3218‹-3326‹ F. into blocks with or without a temporary binder and burning it at a temperature of at least 90 per cent of its melting-point. The material is then crushed, mixed with a binder, moulded, dried, and fired, preferably at 3000-3250‹ F. The binder consists of crude unburnt kaolin and constitutes 25 per cent of the product.
