Abstract

A disposable shaving unit, for forming the head of a razor, has a blade 12 mounted on a blade platform 11, a guardbar 14 disposed in front of and parallel to the cutting edge of the blade and connected to the blade platform, and a mounting member 16 for mounting the unit on a razor handle. One or more flexible strips (16b Fig. 5) integral with and interconnecting the blade platform and the mounting member form a resilient hinge permitting resilient pivotal movement of the blade and guardbar about an axis parallel to the blade edge. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Pivotal shaving unit This invention relates to shaving equipment, and more particularly to a shaving unit incorporating a blade having a cutting edge and designed to be mounted on a razor handle for pivotal movement against a biassing spring about an axis parallel to the cutting edge, since such pivotal movement is found by many users to give a better or more comfortable shave.
Shaving units of this type are well known and since they are intended to be discarded when the blade or blades no longer give a satisfactory shave, they are commonly formed to be detachable from the supporting razor handle.
Hitherto, shaving units of this type have been formed with a pair of spaced-apart recesses on the pivot axis, for engagement with claws of the razor handle. If such handles are detachable from the shaving unit they are of relatively complex construction, since they must include not only a mechanism for moving the claws into and out of engagement with the recesses of the shaving unit, but they must also incorporate a spring device for engagement by the shaving unit, to resiliently oppose the pivotal movement of the unit.
According to the present invention there is provided a disposable shaving unit comprising a blade platform at least one blade having a cutting edge and secured to the blade platform, a guard bar located in parallel spaced relationship to the cutting edge, and a mounting member by which the blade and blade platform can be, or are, secured to a razor handle, said mounting member including one or more flexible strips integral with the blade platform and forming a resilient hinge, the axis of the hinge being parallel to said cutting edge.
One embodiment of shaving unit in accordance with the invention is illustrated in the acompanying drawing in which: Figure lisa plan view of the shaving unit with the blade or blades and top cap removed to show better the construction of the unit: Figure 2 is a front elevation of the unit of Figure 1; Figure 3 is an end view of the unit of Figure 1; Figures 4, Sand 6 are sections on the lines IV-IV, V-V and V1-V1 of Figure 1.
Figure 7 is an underneath plan view of the unit of Figure 1.
As shown in the drawing, the shaving unit comprises a blade platform 11, a blade 12 secured to the platform 11, a top cap 13 secured to the platform 11 by rivets which thus hold the blade to the platform, and a guard bar 14 extending parallel to the cutting edge of the blade and formed integrally with side walls 15 which themselves are integral with the blade platform.
A second blade can be mounted above the first blade with a spacer therebetween, the cutting edges of the two blades being staggered. For simplicity the blade and top cap have been omitted from all the views except that of Figure 4.
The means for mounting the shaving unit on a razor handle comprise a mounting member 16 in the form of a parallel-sided strip which is integral with the underside of the blade platform. Closely adjacent the blade platform, the mounting member has a recess 16a extending therealong on the side remote from the guardbar, the depth of the recess being such as to leave, between the base of the recess and the opposite side of the mounting member, only a relatively thin flexible strip 1 6b or a plurality of such strips joining the mounting member 16 to the blade platform 11.
As shown in Figure 2, the mounting member contains three apertures 16thus leaving four such flexible strips 1 6b joining the mounting member to the platform. The distance between the upper and lower sides of the recess will determine the maximum bending of the strips away from the unstressed position of the strips as shown in the drawing.
The portion of the mounting member which engages a razor handle can be of L section as shown or of any other suitable shape. For example the mounting member could be formed with a re-entrant groove along its length to receive therein the rail which is a conventional means for securing a razor handle to a disposable blade unit.
1. A disposable shaving unit comprising a blade platform, at least one blade having a cutting edge and secured to the blade platform, a guardbar located in parallel spaced relationship to the cutting edge, and a mounting member by which the blade and blade platform can be, or are, secured to a razor handle, said mounting member including one or more flexible strips integral with the blade platform and forming a resilient hinge, the axis of the hinge being parallel to said cutting edge.
2. A disposable shaving unit according to claim 1 wherein the mounting member is a parallel-sided substantially rigid member having a recess in one side thereof such that the base of the recess and the other side of the mounting member define therebetween said one or more flexible strips.
3. A disposable shaving unit according to claim 2 wherein the spacing between the opposite sides of said recess determine the maximum pivotal move mentoftheshaving unit during shaving away from the relaxed state of the flexible strip or strips.
4. A disposable shaving unit substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
