Abstract

Apparatus for attaching a garbage crusher to a sink comprises an annular upper connecting plate 5 having at the outer periphery thereof a plurality of engaging hooks 7'a, 7''a and a lower connecting plate 8 having at the outer periphery thereof a plurality of couplers 9', 9'' having rings 10', 10'', for engaging the-hooks 7'a, 7''a. The upper connecting plates is fixed to the drain pipe 2 of the sink 1 by means of threaded rods 6', 6'' mounted on the upper connecting plate: a metal ring plate 3, having small holes 4 adapted to engage with said rods, and engagable with projections formed on the outer surface of the drain pipe 2. Each ring 10', 10'' includes a rubber sleeve 10'a, 10''a serving to reduce vibrations caused by operating the garbage crusher. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for attaching a garbage crusher to a sink The invention relates to apparatus for attaching a garbage crusher to a sink.
Particularly, the invention is an improvement of our previous Korean Utility Model Application No.
84-2210, enabling easier attachment or separation of a garbage crusher to or from a sink. Our previous attaching construction comprises an upper connecting plate to be fitted around a drain pipe disposed on the bottom of a sink and a lower connecting plate attached to a garbage crusher and adapted to be connected with said upper connecting plate. The upper connecting plate has at one side thereof an engaging groove and an engaging jaw, which engage with a protrusion of the lower connecting plate formed by curving one side portion thereof. The upper connecting plate is coupled at the other side thereof with the lower connecting plate by means of a threaded rod and a butterflytype nut.
However, such a construction makes the connection of the crusher to the sink very inconvenient. Since the threaded rod and nut are directly subjected to vibration generated by driving the motor of the crusher, they may loosen to form a gap therebetween. This causes an undesirable leakage of water.
The upper connecting plate is in close contact with the bottom of sink, by a screwing force of the threaded rod connected thereto. Since this rod has a protrusion-type head, however, the pressing force transmitted via the rod is very slight in amount.
In addition, the drain pipe has at the outer surface thereof an annular step for engaging with the upper connecting plate. This formation of annular step causes the manufacture of drain pipe to be complicated.
Accordingly, an object of the invention is to provide an improved construction enabling easier and accurate attachment or separation of a garbage crusher to or from a sink.
According to the present invention there is provided apparatus for attaching a garbage crusher to a sink having a drain pipe at the bottom thereof, comprising an annular upper connecting plate adapted to fit around the drain pipe and provided at the outer periphery thereof with a plurality of engaging hooks, meansforfixing said upper connecting plate to the drain pipe, and a lower connecting plate adapted to be attached to the garbage crusher and provided at the outer periphery thereof with a plurality of couplers, each coupler being adapted to engage each hook of said upper connecting plate.
Preferably, the means for fixing said upper connecting plate to the drain pipe comprises a plurality of substantially vertical threaded rods rotatably attached to the upper connecting plate, each rod having at the top end thereof a protrusion, a metal ring plate adapted to fit around the drain pipe above the upper connecting plate, the ring plate being supported by said rods and having a plurality of locating holes each for receiving a said protrusion of a said rod, a plurality of projections being formed on the outer surface of the drain pipe and adapted to support the upper connecting plate.
In this preferred construction, when the threaded rods are rotated in a direction to enlarge the vertical spacing between the upper connecting plate and the ring plate, the upper connecting plate is urged downwardly against the projections of the drain pipe and the ring plate is urged upwardly towards the bottom surface of the sink, thereby ensuring the fixing of said upper connecting plate to the bottom of the sink. A rubber ring may be provided between the ring plate and the bottom ofthe sink to assist in attenuating, vibrations caused by operation of the garbage crusher.
In a preferred embodiment, each coupler of the lower connecting plate includes an engaging ring and a rubber packing adapted to be inserted into a said engaging hook of the upper connecting plate.
The rubber packing effectively also serves to reduce any vibration generated by driving the motor of the garbage crusher.
The invention also provides a system for crushing garbage comprising a garbage crusher and apparatus as described above for attaching the garbage crusher to the sink.
An embodiment ofthe invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is an exploded perspective view showing apparatus in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing a garbage crusher attached to a sink by the apparatus of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a part-sectional view similar to Fig. 2, showing the condition when the crusher is separated from the sink.
Referring to the drawings, a drain pipe 2 is mounted on the bottom surface of a conventional sink 1 in a conventional manner. The drain pipe has a plurality of projections adapted to support an upper connecting plate 5. In the drawings, only two projections 2' and 2" are shown. A ring plate 3 fits around the drain pipe 2 and has three small holes 4, 4', 4", into which protrusions 6b, 6'b, 6"b of respective threaded rods 6, 6', 6" are inserted. The rods 6, 6', 6" are rotatably mounted to the upper connecting plate 5 and have shoulders 6a, 6'a, 6"a to seat the ring plate 3 thereon, respectively.
Three extension members 7, 7', 7" extend from the outer periphery of the upper connecting plate 5 and have at their ends engaging hooks 7a, 7'a, 7"a, respectively. These engaging hooks serve to receive rubberpackings in the form of sleeves 10a, 10'a, 10"a mounted on engaging rings 10, 10', 10" of respective couplers 9, 9', 9". The couplers 9, 9', 9" extend from the outer periphery of the lower connecting plate 8 attached to a garbage crusher.
A rubber ring member 11 is disposed between upper and lower connecting plates 5 and 8. The rubber ring member 11 has in the central opening thereof a plurality of rubber projections 11' arranged to prevent upward discharge of garbage.
Below the ring member 11, a conventional crusher A is disposed, which is comprised of a lower casing 12, a motor M disposed in the lower casing, a crushing disc 14 fixedly mounted on a driving shaft 13 of the motor M, and an upper casing having at an inner surface thereof a crushing protrusion 16.
In the drawings, reference numeral 17 designates a rubber ring for reducing the effects of vibration, 18 a member for avoiding reverse flow of drain water, 19 a hole for detecting leakage of water, and 20 a drain port.
When the conventional crusher A is required to be attached to the sink 1, the metal ring plate 3 and the upper connecting plate 5 are together placed upwardly on the drain pipe, until the metal ring plate 3 contacts the bottom surface of the sink 1. In this condition, the upper connecting plate 5 is disposed at a level higher than that of projections 2', 2" of the drain pipe 2. The threaded rods 6, 6', 6" are then screwed into respective holes provided in the upper connecting plate 5, and their protrusions 6b, 6'b, 6"b project into holes 4, 4', 4" formed in the ring plate 3 such that the shoulders 6, 6'a, 6"a of the rods support the ring plate.Further screwing of the threaded rods results in enlargement of the vertical spacing between the upper connecting plate 5 and the ring plate 3, until the upper connecting plate is urged against the projections 2, 2" of the drain pipe 2 and the ring plate 3 is pressed against the rubber ring 17 in engagement with the bottom surface of the sink 1. The fixing of the upper connecting plate 5 to the bottom of the sink 1 is thereby ensured.
The crusher A can then be mounted to the upper connecting plate 5. Firstly, engaging rings 10, 10', 10" of couplers 9, 9', 9" of lower connecting plate 8 attached to the crusher A are raised up so that the rubber sleeves 10a, 10'a, 1O"a can engage hooks 7a, 7'a, 7"a of the upper connecting plate 5, respectively. Then, couplers 9, 9', 9" are downwardly pressed to the position shown in Fig. 2, so that the crusher A can be easily fixed to the drain pipe 2 at the bottom of the sink. The rubber sleeves 10a, 10'a, 10"a also effectively serve to reduce vibration effects.
When the crusher A is out of order or it is required to remove the crushed garbage therefrom, it is necessary to separate the crusherAfrom the sink 1.
To this end, the couplers 9, 9', 9" of lower connecting plate 8 are again raised up, so that the rubber sleeves 1 0a, 1 0'a, 1 0"a are disengaged from the hooks 7a, 7'a, 7"a of the upper connecting plate 5, respectively. Thus, the crusher A can be easily separated from the drain pipe 2, as shown in Fig. 3.
It is to be clearly understood that there are no particular features of the foregoing specification, or of any claims appended hereto, which are at present regarded as being essential to the performance of the present invention, and that any one or more of such features or combinations thereof may therefore be included in, added to, omitted from or deleted from any of such claims if and when amended during the prosecution of this application or in the filing or prosecution of any divisional application based thereon.

Claims (5)

1. Apparatus for attaching a garbage crusherto a sink having a drain pipe at the bottom thereof, comprising an annular upper connecting plate adapted to fit around the drain pipe and provided at the outer periphery thereof with a plurality of engaging hooks, meansforfixing said upper connecting plate to the drain pipe, and a lower connecting plate adapted to be attached to the garbage crusher and provided at the outer periphery thereof with a plurality of couplers, each coupler being adapted to engage each hook of said upper connecting plate.
2. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the means for fixing said upper connecting plate to the drain pipe comprises a plurality of substantially vertical threaded rods rotatably attached to the upper connecting plate, each rod having the top end thereof a protrusion, and a metal ring plate adapted to fit around the drain pipe above the upper connecting plate, the ring plate being supported by said rods and having a plurality of locating holes each for receiving a said protrusion of a said rod, there being a plurality of projections formed on the outer surface of the drain pipe and adapted to supportthe upper connecting plate.
3. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein each coupler of the lower connecting plate includes an engaging ring and a rubber packing adapted to engage a said engaging hook of the upper connecting plate.
4. Apparatus for attaching a garbage crusherto a sink substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
5. A system for crushing garbage comprising a garbage crusher and apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim for attaching the garbage crusher to the sink.
