Abstract

The handle 1 of a cricket bat has a tapered end 2 glued into a complementary bore 3 in the blade of the bat. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Sports Equipment The handle of a conventional cricket bat is spliced into the blade. This means of fixing has been used for many years, but requires very accurate machining of the tapered end of the cane handle and complementary slot in the blade of the bat.
The present proposal simplifies manufacture and is illustrated in the drawing, wherein: Figure 1 shows a handle, and Figure 2 is a partial section through a bat assembled in accordance with the present proposal.
Referring to the drawing, a cane handle 1 is prepared by machining a taper 2 at its end. The taper is shown to have a circular cross section with maximum and minimum diameters "a" and "b" respectively, and an overall length "c".
Purely by way of example, these dimensions may be as follows: a 22 mm b 15 mm c 140 mm The blade 3 of the bat is drilled to form a tapered bore 4 with dimensions corresponding substantially to those of the taper of the handle. Suitable adhesive is applied and the handle inserted.
Although the taper of handle and bore are shown to be frustoconical, they may taper to a point, although this is not preferred. Alternatively, the bore may taper to a point and the handle may be frustoconical. The taper may have a form other than that shown, being stepped or of some other conic section.
The present proposal may possibly be applied to other sports equipment, for example to golf clubs.
Means other than adhesive may be used to secure the handle in the bore. Cbnceivably, the taper can have a cross section other than circular.
1. A cricket bat or other sports item, in which the end of the handle has a taper which is of circular cross-section and is received in a complementary bore n the blade or equivalent component.
2. A method of assembling a cricket bat or other sports item, comprising machining a taper on the handle and drilling a tapered bore in the blade or equivalent component, applying adhesive, and securing the taper on the handle in the bore.
