Description

SPECIFICATION Electrical pin This invention relates to electrical pins for electrical plugs.
It is desirable to provide at least on the socalled live pin of an electrical plug, an electrically insulating sleeve which extends from the casing of the plug to a position spaced from the free end of the pin. The idea is that when the plug is engaged with a socket, the accessible portion of the live pin prior to full engagement of the plug with the socket, will not expose a live surface once the pin has made contact with a contact element of the socket. In this manner the risk of electric shock is minimised.
The object of the present invention is to provide an electrical pin for a plug in a simple and convenient form.
According to the invention an electrical pin for an electrical plug comprises in combination, a contact portion having a rectangular section, the contact portion in use engaging a contact element of a socket, a connector portion adapted to have an electrical connection made thereto, said connector portion in use being housed within the casing of the plug, an intermediate portion serving to electrically connect the contact portion and the connector portion, said intermediate portion extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of said contact portion but offset relative thereto, and a sleeve member formed from electrically insulating material, said sleeve member defining an elongated bore through which said intermediate portion is passed during assembly of the pin, and interengaging means on said sleeve member and said contact portion to prevent relative angular movement of the contact portion and sleeve member, said sleeve member having a section corresponding to that of the contact portion whereby the surfaces of said sleeve member and said contact portion are continuous.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a part sectional side elevation of a portion of an electrical plug with a pin constructed in accordance with the invention in position, Figure 2 is a perspective view of the pin prior to its assembly in the casing of the plug, Figure 3 is a perspective view showing components of the pin during assembly, and Figure 4 shows a modification.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings the electrical plug comprises a base portion 10 and a cover portion 11 which is secured to the base portion in a well known manner, by means of a retaining screw. The base portion defines a recess 1 2 from the base wall of which extends an aperture 1 3.
The recess and aperture accommodate the pin constructed as will be described.
The pin comprises a contact portion 1 4 which is of rectangular section having its larger side walls tapered to facilitate engagement of the contact portion with contact elements in a socket. The pin also includes a connector portion 1 5 which in the particular example, is provided with a bore 1 6 to receive an electrical conductor. A retaining screw 1 7 is provided to secure the conductor within the bore.
In order to effect an electrical connection between the contact portion 14 and the connector portion 15, an intermediate portion 1 8 is provided, this being of cylindrical form and formed integrally with the contact portion.
The ends of the intermediate portion are of reduced diameter to enable it to be secured within complementary drillings formed in the contact portion and connector portion although as shown in Fig. 1, the intermediate portion 1 8 may be formed integrally with the contact portion 14.
The longitudinal axis of the intermediate portion 1 8 is parallel to but offset from the longitudinal axis of the contact portion 14 and engageable with the intermediate portion is a sleeve member 1 9 in which is formed an elongated bore 20 through which the intermediate portion 1 8 passes. The sleeve member is formed from electrically insulating material and its cross-section over substantially the whole of its length, is the same as that of the contact portion. In order to locate the sleeve 1 9 against angular movement relative to the contact portion 1 4 so that the surfaces of the sleeve member and the contact portion remain in alignment, the contact portion and the sleeve member are provided with interengaging means which in the example shown in Figs. 1-3, comprises a blind bore 21 formed in the contact portion and an integral peg 22 formed on the end surface of the sleeve member. When the peg is engaged in the bore, the sleeve member and contact portion are restrained against angular movement and the surfaces of the contact portion and sleeve member are continuous.
Fig. 4 shows a modification to the interengaging means in which the contact portion 14 is provided with a shallow groove 23 in which is engaged a complementary rib 24 formed on the sleeve member 1 9.
As shown in Figs. 1-3, the sleeve member 1 9 defines a pair of lateral projections 25 and these projections abut the base wall of the recess 1 2. If desired projections can also be formed on the other two sides of the sleeve member.
Conveniently the reduced end of the intermediate member 1 8 is secured within the connector portion 1 5 by a riveting operation.
