Abstract

A method of fixing a shaft in the handle of a badminton racket comprises the steps of: providing a mold (70) having a cavity (63) shaped to define the handle of the badminton racket; positioning a shaft extending at least two thirds of the length of the handle from its front end and substantially along the axis of the cavity; pouring foamable material into the mold; foaming the foamable material in the mold, thereby the shaft is longitudinally embraced by the foamable material to form an embryo handle; removing the embryo handle from the mold. So that, when using the badminton racket having the structure according to this method, to hit a shuttlecock, the force used can be transfered from the handle to the head portion more accurately. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improved method of fixing shaft in a handle of badminton racket and the product thereof This invention relates to an improved method of fixing a shaft in the handle of a badminton racket, by this method, the shaft can be inserted into the handle at least 2/3 of its length so that when hitting the shuttlecocks the force used can be transferred from the handle to the head portion more accurately.
At present, the badminton racket manufacturers fix the shaft in a wooden handle by drilling a long hole therein and then inserting the shaft into the hole. The connection structure of the shaft and the handle of a badminton racket made by this known method is illustrated with reference to the Figure 1.
Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the connection structure of the shaft and the handle of a know badminton racket. In Figure 1, a shaft 10 made of a long hollow metal tube is inserted into a long hole which is formed in the tip portion of a wooden handle 11. As shown in the Figure 1, the insertion length of the shaft 10 is only about one half of the whole length of the handle 11, that is, usually the long hole is drilled to be 1/2 of the whole length of the handle 11. Besides, normally the material hardness of the shaft 10 is designed to be larger than that of the handle 11, therefore, when using this racket hit shuttlecock, at the point where the shaft 10 and the handle 11 is connected, a stress is formed, this stress will give an undersirable influence on the control efficiency of the shuttlecock. Moreover, the closer the player grips the handle near the end portion or the greater the force use, the greater the stress becomes. In order to solve the above-mentioned defects, drilling a long hole passing through the end portion was considered. However, in practice, there are still problems that have remained unsolved, that is, the length of the handle and the diameter of the shaft have their standard specifications, the length of the handle is required to be 18-19 cm, the diameter of the shaft is required to be 6-8mm. As the manufactur produces the badminton racket by using a drill to open a long hole in a wooden handle, for a 68mm diameter shaft, a long hole of about 6-8mm in diameter is required, namly, a drill of 6-8 mm in diameter must be used. However, the length of the drill depends on the diameter, for a drill of 6-8 in diameter, the length is no more than 84-86 mm, that is to say, when we use a drill of 6-8 mm in diameter to drill a long hole in a wooden handle of 18-19 cm, the obtainable length can only be 1/2 of its whole length. In the case of using a special long drill, because the drill is usually rotated at a very high speed, vibration is produced, the hole drilled is not satisfactory.
It is accordingly a primary object of this invention to provide an improved method of fixing the shaft in the handle of a badminton racket so that the above-mentioned defects can be solved.
According to the present invention, this and other objects are achieved by providing an improved method of fixing the shaft in the handle of a badminton racket, which method includes the steps of: providing a mold having a cavity shaped to define the outer form of a handle of a badminton racket; positioning a shaft extending at least two thirds of the length of the handle from its front end and substantially along the axis of the cavity; pouring a foamable material into the mold; foaming the foamable material in the mould, thereby the shaft is longitudinally embraced by the foamable material to form an embryo handle; removing the embryo handle from the mold.
This object, features, advantages of the present invention will be more apparent in the following description of a preferred embodiment with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure l is a sectional view showing a connection structure of the shaft and handle in the prior art; Figure 2 is a schematic view illustrating the manufacturing process of the invention; Figure 3 is a longitudial sectional view showing the connection structure of the shaft and the handle of the badminton racket according to the present invention; Figure 4 is a front view of a badminton racket having the connection structure of Figure 3.
Referring to Figure 2-3, there is shown a preferred embodiment of an improved method of fixing a shaft 30 in the handle of a badminton racket, which method includes the steps of: providing a mold 70 which consists of upper die 61 and lower die 62 each having cavity 63 to form the shape of a handle 50 mutually; putting a cone-shaped ring 53 into the fromt of the cavity and inserting a shaft 30 which is made of hollow metal tube through the ring 53 and the cavity 63 of the lower die 62 with its end portion 31 sticking out above the rear end of the cavity 63; covering the lower die 62 with the upper die 62; pouring liquid polyurethane foam into and letting the foam harden; removing the embryo handle together with the shaft from the cavity; winding a leather cover 54 on the outer periphery of the handle 50; covering the end portion of the handle 50 with a cap 55 having a hole 56 in its center so as to permit the protruding portion 31 to passing through therein and have a plane surface 32 on the bottom of the handle 50 as shown in Figure 3.
Referring to Figure 4 there is shown a badminton racket 2 of the invention which includes a head portion 20, a shaft 30, a throat 40 connected the head portion 20 and the shaft 30 and a handle 50.
The head portion 20 is formed by bending a long hollow tube into the shape as shown, and a plurality of guts are stretched thereon.
Accordingly, as the handle body is made of foamable material and the shaft is substantially extending the entire length of the end portion of the handle, when hitting the shuttlecock the force used can be transfered from the handle to the head portion more accuratly.
While the present invention has been particularly shown and described with reference to a preferred embodiment thereof, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention as being defined in the appending claims.
