Description
SPECIFICATION
Casement window stay
This invention relates to a stay fastening for a casement window, comprising a bracket adapted to be secured to the pivotally opening casement frame, and an arm articulated to the bracket and adapted to engage a retaining member secured to the fixed frame of the window. Such a casement window stay will hereafter be referred to as a casement window stay of the kind specified.
Casement window stays of the kind specified as generally known hitherto have the arm, which is provided on its underside with recesses for receiving a projection provided on the retaining member, made as a metal die casting. Whilst such construction is satisfactory, it is relatively expensive, and limiting as to design features, both operational and aesthetic, that can be incorporated.
It is the object of the present invention to provide an improved casement window stay.
According to the invention, we provide a casement window stay of the kind specified wherein said arm is provided on its underside with formations adapted to receive a projection provided on said retaining member, said arm comprising a moulded plastics component having said formations, and a covering member fitted to the upper side of said plastics component.
Preferably the covering member is of metal, formed as an extrusion and of a cross-sectional shape which interfits with the plastics component so as to be fitted thereon by sliding longitudinally thereof.
In such a stay, the covering member reinforces and gives rigidity to the plastics component of the arm, as well as enabling the arm as a whole to have more complex features of design and appearance than is possible with a one piece die cast arm.
The formations in the plastics component may comprise apertures extending therethrough, which apertures are closed at their upper ends by the covering member. Each formation may then include a lip at its lowermost end, and the projection on the retaining member may have an enlarged head portion which has to be snapped past the lip, deforming the plastics material, to enter the selected formation. This provides additional security for the stay in use, and is a feature which cannot be incorporated in a one-piece moulded or die cast arm, since undercut formations cannot be manufactured by such processes.
These and other features of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a stay according to the invention.
Figure 2 is an underneath view of the stay.
Figure 3 is an end view of the stay, in the direction of arrow 3 in Fig. 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged cross-section of the plastics component of the stay, on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the retaining member of the stay.
Figure 6 is an end view of the retaining member.
Figures 7 and 8 are respectively side and plan views of the stay.
Referring firstly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, there is shown a stay fastening for a casement window, comprising a bracket 10, an arm 11, and a retaining member 1 2. The bracket 10 is adapted to be secured to the pivotally opening frame of the casement window by screws as shown at 13, and the retaining member 1 2 has apertures as 14 for receiving screws to secure it to the fixed peripheral frame of the window.
The arm 11 comprises two components, namely a moulded plastics component 1 5 and a covering member 1 6 in the form of a metal extrusion, e.g. an aluminium alloy, fitted to the upper side of the plastics component. The cross-sectional shape of the plastics component 1 5 and the metal covering member 1 6 are such that they interfit as shown clearly in
Fig. 3, and the covering member can be fitted to the plastics component by sliding it onto it longitudinally. At one end, the plastics component of the arm has a socket which receives a ball-ended pin 1 7 on bracket 10, so that the arm is connected to the bracket for articulation relative thereto. When we refer to upper and lower parts of the arm, we have regard to the orientation shown in the drawings and most usually adopted when the stay is installed in a window.
The plastics component 1 5 of the arm has, spaced along its length, a number of formations 1 8 for receiving a projection 1 9 on the retaining member 1 2. The projection 1 9 is entered into a selected formation 1 8 according to how far the window is to be stayed open. The projection 1 9 has an enlarged head portion 20, and each formation 1 8 has a lip 21 at its lowermost end, of a dimension such that the plastics material has to be deformed for the head 20 of projection 1 9 to enter the formation. Thus when the projection is engaged in one of the formations 18 there is high security against accidental disengagement.
The provision of lips 21 adjacent the lower ends of formations 1 8 is only possible because of the configuration of the arm as a separate plastics component and covering member. The formations 1 8 take the form of through apertures, closed by the covering member 16, which enables lips 21 to be provided in the moulding process for the plastics component. If the arm were not of such two-part construction, it would not be possible to incorporate undercut formations 18 in it.
The retaining member 1 2 is provided with a further projection 22 which is of elongated form, having a divergent-convergent head.
The plastics component of the arm has a recess 23 provided between two adjacent formations 18, and the cross-sectional shape of the arm through this recess is the same as that through the formations 18. When engaged in recess 23, therefore, the projection 21 is positively held therein. Further, the side surfaces 24 of the head of projection 21 act as cam surfaces during entry into recess 23, so that the window is drawn to a predetermined closed position. When the window is closed, and projection 22 occupies recess 23, the projection 1 9 occupies a recess 25 in the arm.
The complete stay is shown in Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawings. It will be noted that it presents, as a whole, a neat and slim appearance, as well as a low profile. The latter feature renders it particularly suitable for use with metal framed windows as well as wooden windows.
