Abstract

A window handle assembly has a handle part (3) pivotally connected to a base part (1) by a pivot pin (2). The base part (1) has holes (7) through which screws or rivets can pass to attach the assembly to a window frame. In order to improve the appearance of the assembly there are provided inserts (11) which fit into respective complementary recesses (6) in the base part to cover the screws or rivets. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Window furniture This invention relates to window furniture, and particularly to window handle assemblies.
Window handle assemblies for casement windows commonly have a base part having holes through which screws or rivets can pass to a sash stile of a window frame. Pivotally connected to the base part is a handle part having a handle portion which can be manually gripped to rotate to engage on a retainer, such as a strike plate, on the window mullion or transom to hold the casement sash in a closed position.
Window frames are usually of wood, extruded aluminium or plastics material and the window is commonly supplied by the manufacturer with the furniture, i.e. window stays and handle assemblies, already attached by suitable connectors, such as screws or rivets, to the frame. The connectors may, however, be unsightly.
An aim of the present invention is to improve the appearance of window handle assemblies.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a window handle assembly having a handle part pivotally connected to a base part, the base part having holes therethrough for the passage of connecting means, such as screws or rivets, and an insert which can be mounted on the base part to cover the holes and the connecting means.
Preferably, the top of the base has two recesses, one on each side of the connection of the base part with the handle part, to receive two such inserts.
The or each insert preferably has a downwardly depending spigot which is a push fit in a complementary recess in the top of the connecting means covered in use by the insert.
A window handle assembly in accordance with the invention and some modifications thereof will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of the handle assembly.
Figure 2 is a part-sectional view taken along the line ll-ll of Fig. 1, and Figure 3 is a detail sectional view showing a modification of the handle assembly of Fig.
1.
Refering to Figs. 1 and 2, the handle assembly comprises a base part 1 to which is pivotally connected by a pin 2 a handle part 3 having a handle portion 4A and a projection 4B. In use the projection 4B is engageable with a strike plate of a window mullion to hold the window closed, in known manner.
Preferably, the base and handle parts are die cast from a zinc alloy, but they could be manufactured in other ways or from other materials. For example, the parts could be extruded and then machine finished.
On its top face 5 the base part 1 has two recesses 6, one on each side of the pin 2 between the base and handle parts. Extending entirely through the base part 1 are holes 7 having countersinking 8. Through the holes pass connectors 9, such as rivets or screws, for attaching the base part 1 to a window frame (not shown).
In order to cover the connectors 9 and improve the appearance of the handle assembly two inserts 11 are provided which are arranged to fit in and have shapes complementary to the respective recesses 6. Each insert 11 has two downwardly depending cylindrical spigots 12, each spigot being a push fit in a complementary recess 1 3 formed in the top of each connector 9, as best seen in Fig. 2. As shown in Fig. 2, the depth of each insert 11 may be the same as the depth of its associated recess so that a flush top surface of the base part 1 and the insert 11 is provided.
The inserts 11 are preferably of plastics material and may be suitably coloured and may have printing thereon, for example the name of the manufacturer.
Many modifications of the above-described assembly are possible. For example the inserts 11 could be attached to the base part 1 in other ways. As an example, if the the connectors 9 were screws, the spigots 1 2 could be shaped to fit the slots in the heads of the screws. Furthermore, the edges 1 4 of the recesses 6 could be suitably bevelled, as shown in Fig. 2, and the edges 1 5 of the inserts 11 could be shaped in a complementary manner to permit the inserts to be located in the recesses by flexure of the inserts, which would then be retained by the overlap of the edges 14, 15.
Figure 3 shows another, presently preferred modification of the connection of each insert 11 to the base part 1 and illustrates the cooperating edges 14, 1 5 of the insert 11 and of the recess 6. In this case the edge 1 5 of each insert has a shoulder 1 6 which forms a step and the edge 14 of each recess 6 is perpendicular to the top face 5, or slopes slightly inwardly from the top face 5. The shoulder 1 6 seats upon the top face 5 and the lower part of edge 1 5 of the insert resiliently engages the edge 14 of the recess to assist the spigots 1 2 in the retention of the insert in the recess. In this modification the top of the insert is above the top face 5.
Although the above-described handle assembly is best suited for use with windows which are manufactured and assembled with the window furniture in a factory, it could be used for attachment to existing window frames.

Claims (7)

1. A window handle assembly comprising a handle part pivotally connected to a base part, the base part having holes therethrough through which connecting means for attachment of the base part to a window frame may pass, and an insert which can be mounted on the base part to cover the holes and the connecting means.
2. A window handle assembly according to claim 1, wherein the insert has a downwardly depending spigot which fits in a complementary recess in the connecting means to secure the insert to the connecting means.
3. A window handle assembly according to claim 2, wherein the spigot is a push fit in the recess of the connecting means.
4. A window handle assembly according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the base part has a recess in its top surface for receiving the insert.
5. A window handle assembly according to claim 4, wherein the top surface of the insert when mounted on the base part is substantially coplanar with the top surface of the base part.
6. A window handle assembly according to claim 4 or 5, wherein the edges of the recess of the base part and of the insert are so shaped that the insert has to be flexed to be inserted in the recess of the base part and is thereafter retained by interengagement of the edges of the recess and the insert.
7. A window handle assembly constructed and arranged substantially as herein described with reference to Figs. 1 and 2 or as modified by Fig. 3.
