Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for laying a coat of adhesive coating on sheet materials such as paper and plastics The present invention relates to an apparatus for laying a coat of adhesive on sheet materials such as paper and plastics of the kind comprising a distributing roller which draws the adhesive from a basin and lays it on one surface of the sheet which is caused to pass tangentially to said distributing roller.
It is known that when adhesive tapes made of plastics or of paper are prepared it is necessary to lay an adhesive coat at least over one surface of the sheet material. The adhesive to be laid on may be mixed either with solvents or with water. In the first case the socalled solvent-base adhesives are obtained while in the second case the adhesives thus obtained are called water-base adhesives.
As far as coatings with solvent-base adhesives are concerned, there are many known apparatuses which are suitable to apply a coat of adhesive without incurring too many troubles. In fact the coating with solvent adhesives has no problems as to surface tensions and the surfaces of the sheet materials, either in the case of paper on in the case of plastics do not exert any refusing action towards the adhesive which therefore can be put down properly and laid on in a homogeneous manner. On the contrary, when water adhesives have to be laid on the problem of surface tensions arises. In fact it is known that water laid on a wax-surface tends to gather and does not reach a homogeneous distribution.
In order to obviate this drawback it is necessary then to employ water and adhesive mixtures having a high dry content. These mixtures too, however, involve problems as to the homogeneity, in fact longitudinal ribbinesses are formed on the sheet material while the adhesive is being laid on. These ribbinesses are due to the presently used devices which are not capable of laying on adhesives having a high dry content in a homogeneous manner.
One of the methods presently used called "reverse roll method" consists in employing a triad of rollers. Paper is passed around a driving rubber roller. A second roller is disposed close to the rubber roller and rotates in the opposite direction with respect to the latter. The third roller is disposed above the second roller and in close proximity thereto so that said third and second rollers form a sort of basin adapted to contain the adhesive. As the second roller rotates a certain amount of adhesive sticks fast thereto, said adhesive being then laid on the paper which is caused to move onward by the rubber roller.
This method is normally used for laying on solvent adhesives while difficulties are encountered when water adhesives are concerned. In fact in this case thick adhesives are not suitable because during the coating step they give rise to a continuous longitudinal ribbinessso that the adhesive layer loses the necessary characteristic of homogeneity; for that reason very aqueous adhesives have to be used which, on the other hand, give rise to difficulties due to surface tensions.
Another method called "reverse gravure system" consists in using a roller engraved over the whole length thereof by means of spaced apart alveoli, the depth of said alveoli depending upon the amount of adhesive by weight which is wished to be laid on the sheet material. Said roller draws the water adhesive from a basin and always rotates in the opposite direction with respect to the paper; furthermore it cooperates with a blade suitable to remove the adhesive in excess from the alveoli.
By this method it is possible to achieve a substantially good coating; however it is always necessary to use adhesives characterized by a very small dry quantity, as a rather thick adhesive would involve coating homogeneity problems. Furthermore, this method needs to eliminate the water in excess present in the adhesive and consequently requires the use of driers, which involves important installation and service costs.
A third known method is called "direct blade system". It involves the use of two differently sized rollers. Paper is wound around the bigger one, while the smaller roller, acting as a distributor and a contrast device, cooperates with a blade for directly laying on the adhesive. This method too can be advantageously used as far as solvent adhesives are concerned but it cannot be used for laying on water adhesives. In fact, in order to allow the adhesive to be easily contained in the basin defined by the blade and the distributing roller, that one should have a very high viscosity which, during the coating step, would cause the formation of longitudinal ribbinesses and, as a result, the coating would lack of surface homogeneity.
A further method for laying on water adhesives is called "Mayer Baar". In accordance with this method a basin containing a very liquid adhesive is provided from which a spreading roller draws. The sheet material is caused to pass tangentially to said roller so that the adhesive drawn by the distributing roller may be laid thereon. The regulation of the amount of adhesive is carried out, in a downstream station, by a doctor roll consisting of a roller around which a music wire is wound up. Said roller serves to regulate the amount of adhesive on the sheet material but it inevitably leaves a series of ribbinesses on the adhesive coating due to the presence of the music wire.
The main object of the present invention is to eliminate the above mentioned drawbacks and to provide an apparatus capable of coating the sheet materials with a very homogeneous layer of water-base adhesive having a high dry content.
A further object of the invention is to provide a polyvalent apparatus adapted, by means of ready and quick replacements of some components, to indifferently carry out the coating either with water-base adhesives or with solvent-base adhesives.
The foregoing and still further objects that wiil become more apparent in the following description are attained, in accordance with the present invention, by an apparatus for laying an adhesive coat on sheet materials such as paper or plastics of the kind comprising a distributing roller which draws the adhesive from a basin and lays it on one surface of the sheet that is caused to pass tangentially to said distributing roller characterized in that it comprises a distribution doctor roll adapted to regulate the amount of adhesive on the surface of the distributing roller, a contrast roller disposed tangentially to the distributing roller and adapted to remove the adhesive in excess and to return the sheet material, a cleaning doctor blade for cleaning the distributing roller and adjusting means designed to move the distribution doctor roll, the contrast roller and the cleaning doctor blade close to and away from the distributing roller.
Further features and advantages of the invention will become more apparent from the detailed description of a preferred embodiment of an apparatus for laying an adhesive coat on sheet materials such as paper and plastics given hereinafter by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the only figure is a crosssectional view of the apparatus according to the invention.
Referring to said figure, it is generally indicated at 1 an apparatus for laying an adhesive coat on sheet materials such as paper or plastics, coiled around bobbins, e.g. adhesive tapes, Such an apparatus, disposed on a bearing frame not shown, comprises a distributing roller 2 below which a basin 3 is located designed to collect the residual material left on the distributing roller 2. Within the basin 3, from which the material may directly draw, a further roller 32 dipped into the adhesive may also be provided,- which roller is designed to supply the distributing roller 2 with adhesive.
Sideways to the distributing roller 2 there is a second basin 4 consisting of a bottom wall 5, two side walls 6, only one of them being visible in the figure, and a back wall 7. The front wall of the basin 4 is defined by the distributing roller itself 2.
A distribution doctor roll globally indicated at 8 is pivoted to the side walls 6 of the basin 4. According to a preferred embodiment the distribution doctor roll 8 consists of a substantially cylindrical body g within which a wide longitudinal recess 10 is obtained so as to form a sharp edge 11 which, during the operating step, becomes tangential to the distributing roller 2. The body 9 of the distribution doctor roll 8 can undergo angular displacements about its own axis according to the direction of the arrow 1 2 so that it can -take the appropriate position for removing possible crumbs of adhesive formed between the doctor roll 8 and the distributing roller 2.
A suitable amount of adhesive mixed with water is fed to the basin 4 by means of pumps or like means. In addition the whole basin 4 can be moved away from its operating position, that is from the distributing roller 2, when it is necessary to use solvent-base adhesives. Also the basin 4 together with the doctor roll 8 is susceptible of being moved close to or away from the distributing roller 2 by adjusting means 1 3 in order to settle the distance between the edge 11 of the doctor roll 8 and the distributing roller 2 so that the desired amount of adhesive may be distributed on the latter.
Always referring to the figure a contrast roller is indicated at 14; it is disposed substantially tangential to the distributing roller 2 above the basin 4. The contrast roller 14 is designed to remove the excess of adhesive remaining on the distributing roller 2 and to act as an idler roller for the sheet material identified at 15, along the path that said material has to follow when the coating consists of water-base adhesive.
As it is possible to see in the figure, the sheet material 1 5 comes from a feed roller 16 and may then pass tangentially above or below another idler roller 1 7 following the paths identified at 1 spa and 1 sub respectively. From roller 1 7 the sheet material is caused to pass tangentially to the distributing roller 2 and subsequently around the contrast roller 14. As it is possible to see, depending upon the path followed by the sheet material (1 5a or 1 5b), the latter is brought into contact with the distributing roller 2 at two different points identified at 1 8 and 1 9 respectively. The choice of the path is left to the operator depending upon the type of sheet material used which may require a longer or shorter contact with the distributing roller 2.
The distributing roller 2 is provided with a rotary movement according to the direction indicated by the arrow 20 that is in opposition to the feed motion of the sheet material 1 5.
After contacting the sheet material 15, the distributing roller 2 is brought into contact with a cleaning doctor blade 21 consisting of a support 22 carrying, at one end, a blade 23 capable of removing the residual adhesive and the dust remained on the distributing roller 2 after the same has contacted the sheet material. The cleaning doctor blade 21 is pro vided with adjusting means 24 designed to move it close to or away from the distributing roller 2.
Should solvent adhesive be used, the apparatus of the present invention also provides the use of a distribution doctor roll 25 seen in phantom in the figure which consists of a cylinder disposed tangentially to the distributing roller 2 on top of the same. A further basin is also provided for containing the adhesive and solvent mixture; it is identified at 26 and is seen in phantom in the figure. It is defined by two side walls 27, a back wall 28, the distributing roller 2 and the distribution doctor roll 25.
As it is possible to see from the figure where the whole apparatus for laying on solvent adhesive is seen in phantom the back wall 28 is provided, close to its portion tangential to the distributing roller 2, with a sharp edge 28a suitable to be bayonet coupled with pairs of guides 29 and 30 carried by the side walls 27 of the basin 26. In this case too the apparatus is provided with adjusting means for causing the distribution doctor roll 25 and the whole basin unit to move close to the distributing roller 2. This means is not shown in detail as it is known and conventional.
Always referring to the figure, it is also indicated in phantom the path followed by the sheet material 15 should the apparatus be used for solvent-base adhesive coatings. In this case it is possible to see that the sheet material coming from the feed roller 1 6 embraces the distributing roller 2 which in this case acts as an idler roller too.
After describing the apparatus mainly from a structural standpoint, the operation of the same may be summarized as follows.
When the apparatus 1 has to be used with water adhesive, the adhesive mixed with water is introduced into the basin 4. Afterwards the distributing roller 2 is rotated according to the direction of the arrow 20 and the sheet material is fed following the paths 15a or 15b according to the requirements.
While rotating the distributing roller 2 withdraws a predetermined layer of adhesive which is further stabilized during the withdrawal by the contrast roller 14 which returns the sheet material. So the sheet material lies tangentially to the distributing roller 2 along the portion between the points 18 or 1 9 and the contrast roller 14 and a homogeneous layer of adhesive sticks fast thereto, also due to the presence of a high dry amount.
When the apparatus has to be used for laying on solvent adhesive it is necessary to remove the basin 4 and the contrast roller 14 and to replace them with the above described distribution doctor roll 25 and basin 26. Then the distributing roller 2 is caused to rotate and the sheet material is fed along the path 31. In this way the sheet material surrounds the distributing roller and passes under the unit consisting of the basin 26 and the distribution doctor roll 25 so that it directly receives a homogeneous coating of solvent adhesive on the concerned surface.
The apparatus attains the intended purposes.
Obviously many structural modifications and variations may be made to the apparatus without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. In particular the position of the basin 4 and doctor roll 8 could be suitably changed along the extension of the distributing roller. Furthermore, it should be noted that the distribution doctor roll 8 might take different configurations, for example, when seen in section it could have either a triangular or a trapezoidal or polygonal configuration provided that it can always exhibit a suitably pointed edge close to the tangency generating line between the distributing roller 2 and the doctor roll 8.
