Abstract

A conventional multiplier reel is shown having side flanges 1 and 2. In order to provide protection these are fitted, according to the invention, with annular rubber bands 3 and 4 which have a channel shape section to engage over the profile of the reel flanges 1 and 2. The one band 3 may have moulded recesses 4 to accommodate an operating catch 5. The bands 3 and 4 are profiled on the inner periphery to fit the reel flange and may be held by natural resiliency or by adhesive. The outer periphery of the bands may be ribbed. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Angler's reels This invention relates to angler's reels and is primarily concerned with multiplier reels for sea fishing. When fishing from boats damage often occurs to the side rim of reels through impact with parts of the boat, especially when the boat is pitching. The damage may remove protective coatings, rendering the reel vulnerable to corrosion.
An object of this invention is to provide a reel which is protected to a substantial extent from such damage.
According to this invention there is provided a multiplier fishing reel wherein the side rims thereof have a protective sleeving of a resilient impact absorbing material.
Preferably the sleeving comprises an annular band of rubber with the inner peripheral surface having a channel profile to engage the outer periphery of the rim of the reel. The band may include one or more recesses to receive projecting latch or other operating devices on the reel.
An embodiment is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 shows a multiplier reel in side view to which the protector means of this invention is applied, Figure 2 shows a perspective view of an annular band, and Figure 3 is a section on A-A of Fig. 2.
Referring to 1 of the drawings, a conventional multiplier reel is shown having side flanges 1 and 2.
A further feature of this invention is illustrated in the drawings wherein the band is characterised by a channel shaped cross section having a side rim 6 for engagement with the outside of the reel flange 1 or 2 and a rim 7 for engagement with the inside. The flange 7 is thinner and in use is arranged to be fitted between the outer side plates 8 and 9 of the reel and inner portion of the flange 1 or 2, which can then be tightened up by the securing screws 10 so that the side edge 7 of the band forms a gasket ensuring firstly a watertight seal and secondly to provide electrical insulation whereby electrolytic corrosion is prevented.
Thus according to this aspect of the invention there is provided a multiplier reel assembly characterised by the provision of a band around the side flanges with an inwardly directed portion of the band forming a gasket to seal the side flange against the side plate and also to electrically insulate same.
To fit the protective bands of the invention the side plates 1 and 2 are first removed and the bands 3 and 4 fitted around the periphery. The side plates are then reassembled.
1. A multiplier fishing reel wherein the side rims thereof have a protective sleeving of a resilient impact absorbing material.
2. A reel in accordance with Claim 1, wherein the sleeving comprises an annular band of rubber with the inner peripheral surface having a channel profile to engage the outer periphery of the rim of the wheel.
3. A reel in accordance with Claim 1 or 2, wherein the band includes one or more recesses to receive projecting latch or other operating devices on the reel.
4. A reel in accordance with any preceding claim, wherein the annular band has a channel around the inner periphery defined by side wall portions, one wall portion forming a gasket ring clamped between a side plate and side flange of the reel, the other wall portion overlying the outer part of the outer face of the side plate.
5. A reel in accordance with Claim 4, wherein the one side wall forming the gasket is thinner than the other side wall.
6. A fishing reel including a pair of annular bands as described herein and exemplified by the drawings.
