A hopper 4, Fig. 2, is inserted into a mould with a carton &c. to be filled engaged upon its lower part, and the material is introduced into the hopper. A plunger 5 is lowered by depressing a lever 11 to compress the material into the carton, and is held in its lower position by the engagement of a spring catch 16 with an abutment 13, adjustably secured to the rod 6 of the plunger. During the - descent, a lever 18 is laterally displaced by a guide member 15 on the abutment and rides over a roller 14. A treadle 32 is depressed, and through a string 30, raises four rods 28 to lift the hopper 4. During the ascent, a catch 33 laterally displaces and engages a lever 36, and on the release of the treadle 32 and the subsequent descent of the rods 28, the lever 36 is oscillated about a pivot 41 to pull a cord 42 and release the catch 16. The plunger 5 is thereupon drawn up by a spring and cord 7 and carries the hopper with it by means of spring blades 51 which resiliently grip the inside. During the ascent, the roller 14 lifts the lever 18 about a pivot 23 and actuates carton-closing mechanism 3 through a cord 24. At another point in the ascent, the hopper strikes a stop 52 and is disengaged from the plunger. A treadle 50 is then depressed to raise a plunger 46 and eject the packet. The levers 18, 36 are telescopically adjustable to vary the amount of -actuation. The spring blades 51 are outwardly curved at 53 to act as scrapers on the inside of the hopper.
