Abstract
A work table lamp (6) has an arm (7) with an upstanding portion (12) and parallel branches (8, 13). Branch (8) is pivotally mounted in a bearing assembly beneath the table top (2) and adjustable along a working area (4). The branch (13) supports parallel therewith an elongated shade (14) with an anti-glare wall (15) at one end. The shade is pivotally mounted about the branch (13). Therefore, the arm (7) can be moved in relation to the table and the shade moved in relation to the arm to avoid dazzling a person seated at the desk. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to lamps for work tables
This invention relates to a lamp for work tables, particularly desks or computer terminal desks, the table having a table top with a front edge along which there extends a main working area for the person seated at the table, the lamp comprising an arm having a portion upstanding above the table top and two branches which extend from said portion and one of which is mounted in a bearing assembly beneath the table top, while the other branch of the arm is located above the table top and supports a shade with a light source for the illumination of the table top from above.
Lamps for different kinds of work tables often are in the way of the person working at the table, are adjustable only to a limited extent and frequently have a directly or indirectly dazzling effect.
The object of the present invention therefore is to provide a lamp which remedies all these drawbacks. This is realised according to the invention mainly in that the lamp described has been given the features that are apparent from the characterising clause of appended Claim 1.
The invention will be more fully described below, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a work table with a lamp according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a side view of the work table with the lamp according to the invention;
Figure 3 is a front view of the work table with the lamp according to the invention;
Figure 4 is a side view of a bearing assembly for the lamp; and
Figure 5 is a front view of the lamp bearing assembly.
The work table 1 illustrated in the drawings comprises a table top 2 with a front edge 3 along which there extends a main working area 4 for the person seated at the table. Opposite the front edge 3 there is the rear edge of the table 2, which is designated 5.
For the illumination of the table top 2 from above there is arranged on the table top a lamp 6 with an arm 7 having a portion 12 upstanding above the table top 2 and two branches 8, 13 which extend from said portion and one of which 8 is mounted in a bearing assembly 9, 10, 11 beneath the table top 2, while the other branch 13 is located above the table top 2. The other branch 13 supports a shade 14 with a light source for the illumination of the table top 2 from above. The arm 7 has its branches 8, 13 directed toward the front edge 3 of the table top 2, while the portion 12 upstanding above the table top 2 extends behind the rear edge 5 of the table top 2. One branch 8 of the arm 7 is pivotally mounted in the bearing assembly 9, 10, 11 so that the arm can be swung in the direction C in parallel with the front edge 3 of the table top 2.The shade 14 is elongated, extends in parallel with the other branch 13 and has an end wall 15 facing the front edge 3 of the table top 2, thereby constituting an anti-glare device for the person seated at the front edge 3 of the table top.
Furthermore, the shade 14 is pivotally mounted on said end wall 15 to permit being swung about an axis of rotation 17 parallel with the branch 13. As a result, the arm 7 is movable in relation to the table top 2 and the shade 14 is movable in relation to the arm 7 without causing the shade 14 to occupy positions in which the light source directly dazzles a person seated at the front edge 3 of the table top 2.
The shade 14 is suitably mounted in such a manner on one 13 of the branches 8, 13 of the arm 7 that it is shiftable longitudinally of said branch 13.
The bearing assembly 9, 10, 11 for mounting the arm 7 beneath the table top 2 is so arranged as to be shiftable along the working area 4 extending longitudinally of the front edge 3 and the table top 2. The bearing assembly 9, 10, 11 preferably comprises a holder 9 disposed at the underside of the table top 2 and the branch 8 can be clamped against said holder 9 with the aid of one or more jaws 10 and screws 11 cooperating with said jaws and the holder 9.
In the embodiment illustrated the lamp 6 is provided with reflectors of assymmetrical shape so that the light rays are substantially directed downward and in the direction A, but the reflectors may also be designed so as to simultaneously direct the light rays downward, in the direction A and in the direction B.
A further advantage of the design of the arm 7 is that the entire front edge 3 of the table top 2 as well as the lateral edges thereof are left entirely free.
By loosening the jaws 10 or by not tightening said jaws too firmly, the branch 8 of the arm 7 can be turned about the axis of rotation 16. As a result, the lamp 6 can be swung as indicated by the arrow
C, i.e. the lamp will be capable of moving along the main working area 4 but not in other directions. The shade 14 may be pivotally mounted on the branch 13 so as to permit being turned as indicated by the arrow D about an axis of rotation 17.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment described above and illustrated in the drawings but may be varied within the scope of the appended claims.
It is essential that the lamp rises behind the rear edge 5 of the table top 2, that it illuminates the table top 2 along the main working area 4 but not in other directions, and that it is movable along the main working area but not in other directions. By way of alternative of the embodiment illustrated it may be mentioned that the bearing assembly for the lamp 6 beneath the table top 2 may be longitudinally shiftable on guides or like means along the working area 4, which implies that the lamp 6 can be moved aside altogether, if need be. The arm 7 may also in this case be pivotally mounted. As mentioned in the foregoing, the shade 14 may be pivotally mounted on the branch 13, but it may also be fixedly mounted thereon, should this prove advantageous.The arm 7 need not be in an inte gral piece, as shown in the drawings, but it is important that it does not permit an adjustment of the shade other than that described above. In case the arm is composed of several parts it should be possible to lock these parts together so that they cannot without further ado be displaced in relation to each other. The shade 14 may also be movably mounted on the arm 7 so that it may be shifted along the working area 4. In the illustrated embodiment the arm 7 is of such a design that its branches 8, 13 extend in parallel and are directed in the same sense and that the arm portion 12 is of such a length that the shade 14 will not be placed at too high a level above the table top 2. The branches 8, 13 may be of different length, but the design of the arm 7 may vary depending upon the size of the work table.This also applies to the design and size of the shade 14. The shade 14 extends in parallel with and along the entire branch 8 and it is of such a length that it terminates above that part of the working area 4 which is most remote from the person seated at the table. The shade 14 may extend a greater distance over the working area 4 or terminate before it reaches said working area. The length and location of the shade 14 may vary depending upon the size of the table and the working area, the type of the light source and,or on other factors.
The anti-glare device 15 may be of a type other than an end wall of the shade 14. The lamp bearing assembly comprising the holder 9, the jaws 10 and the screws 11 may be designed in another way than that shown in the drawings. It is essential that the lamp bearing assembly permits clamping the arm 7 in such a way that it remains in the position adjusted, but can be loosened for turning it and thus adjusting it into other positions.
