Abstract

A method of manufacturing dartboard scoring area wiring comprises forming a circular length of wire, bending end portions of the wire where a join is to be made, twisting the bent end portions together to form a piercing leg, and locating the wire by pressing the piercing leg into the surface of the board. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Dart boards This invention relates to dartboards and to methods of manufacturing dartboards. In particular it concerns methods of manufacturing wiring to be secured to the surface of the board to define the various scoring areas.
In traditional good quality dartboards the circular and radial wires, required to define the scoring areas, are composed of hard steel wire. The circular rings defining the doubles, trebles and centre rings need to be accurately made and are formed from a length of wire by bending it into a ring and joining its ends by means of a welded butt joint.
There are three major disadvantages of this technique. Firstly, the heat generated by the welding operation degrades the strength of the wire. Depending on the type of alioy used, it may become either brittle or very soft. In either case the joint may be broken by the impact of a dart.
Secondly, during the formation of the butt joint the welded ends of the wire are forced together and produce an unsightly bulge.
Thirdiy, the diameter of the finished ring which must be accurate, is affected not only by an initial cut length but also by the amount of compression at the wire ends during the welding operation. The control of the degree of compression when using automatic production machinery is not easy to achieve.
In United Kingdom published specification no. 2084473, in the name of Nodor Company Limited, a method of making the wiring for a dartboard is disclosed which involves bending adjacent end portions of the wire ring and joining these portions together so that they may together pierce the board. The present invention is within the general definition of the invention contained in the aforementioned patent specification and constitutes an improved embodiment of it.
In the embodiment of the invention described in the published specification mentioned above the two bent ends of a circular dartboard wire are welded together at a position which is beneath the surface of the dartboard when the ends are inserted into the board. Whilst this is an improvement over the traditional methods there is still the possibility that the ends portion of the wire may be separated and in particular that the region of the joint on the surface of the board may be widened by the impact of a dart. To secure the joint region of the ring staples are required on either side of the joint thus requiring more staples than in the traditional case.
It has long been an objective in the manufacture of dartboards to reduce the metallic components on the surface of the board. Therefore the sector-defining wires are made as thin as possible, but the large number of staples required to hold these in place remain a problem. It will be appreciated that when an oncoming dart hits a staple, the impact causes the dart to bounce out of the board. It is now accepted that every staple that can be omitted, assuming that no other disadvantages accrue, makes for a better quality dartboard.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improvement to the method of manufacture as aforesaid and to provide a dartboard manufactured by said new method.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of manufacturing the wiring that defines the scoring areas on the surface of the dartboard in which two ends of one or more wires are joined, the method comprising bending end portions of the wire to form projecting limbs, bringing the bent ends into juxtaposition and joining the bent end portions by twisting them together.
The invention also provides a dartboard including circular wiring made by the aforesaid method the joined bent end portions being inserted into the surface of the board.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a diagramatic illustration of the circular wire made in accordance with the invention prior to its being fastened to the dartboard.
In accordance with the invention, a length of high tensile steel wire is cut longer than needed to provide a circular wire for a dartboard. The wire is formed on a jig and equal portions at each end are bent downwards to leave a length the exact size required. The wire is then placed in a further jig which holds it in a desired circular shape with the bent limbs touching one another. The two limbs are then twisted together as illustrated in the figure. The circular ring is held fixed whilst the twisting takes place and the overall shape of the ring is unaffected.
Machines for automatically twisting lengths of wire together are very well known and can easily be obtained or modified to suit this particular application. The invention also encompasses the twisting together of the ends by hand.
When the ring is attached to the front surface of the dartboard the two limbs, twisted together, are pushed deep into the board. Because the two limbs when twisted together do not present a smooth outer surface the bent portions are more securely retained in the material of the board. Furthermore since the joint between the two bent ends is not merely at their free ends but extends most of the way up their length the ends of the circular wire adjacent the bent ends are held firmly in position. It is unnecessary to use additional staples on either side of the joint to prevent movement of the wire in this region.
