Abstract

A heavy duty drum has end portions (12) secured at each end of its cylindrical metal body portion (10), and each end portion over the area (27) thereof which lies within the internal diameter of the body portion has a thickness substantially twice that of the area outside the internal diameter and/or twice that of the drum body portion. Each end portion (12) may be reinforced by a metal disc (25) welded on its inside, the disc having a diameter only slightly less than the internal diameter of the drum and a thickness similar to that of the end portion or of the body portion. The disc and area may be pierced to accommodate pour and vent openings. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Heavy duty drum This invention relates to heavy duty drums.
Heavy duty steel drums having capacities generally in excess of 30 imperial gallons are widely used for the storage and transport of liquids and after many years of development are now generally strong and reliable containers capable of withstanding the considerable abuse that they encounter.
There is however a requirement for such a drum capable of withstanding an internal pressure of 20 p.s.i.g., and no drum known to the Applicants was found to be able to withstand such a pressure.
Only now after extensive research and development have the Applicants been able to design such a drum.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a heavy duty drum capable of withstanding an internal pressure of 20 p.s.i.g.
The present invention is a heavy duty drum having a cylindrical metal body portion and end portions each secured at a respective end of the body portion to seal off that end of the body portion, each end portion, over substantially the area thereof within the internal diameter of the drum body portion, having a thickness substantially twice that of those areas outside the internal diameter of the drum.
The present invention is also a heavy duty drum having a cylindrical metal body portion and end portions each secured at a respective end of the body portion to seal off that end of the body portion, each end portion, over substantially the area thereof within the internal diameter of the drum body portion, having a thickness substantially twice that of the drum body portion.
The present invention is further a heavy duty drum having a cylindrical metal body portion and end portions each secured at a respective end of the body portion to seal off that end of the body portion, each end portion being reinforced to substantially twice its thickness over substantially the area thereof within the internal diameter of the drum body portion.
Preferably each end portion has welded on the inside thereof a disc having a diameter only nominally smaller than the internal diameter of the drum.
Each disc may be formed from metal sheet having a gauge the same as that of its respective end portion or of the body portion.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a drum according to the present invention; Figure 2 is an end elevation of the top of the drum shown in Fig. 1; and Figure 3 is a cross section of the part of the drum, indicated in Fig. 1, where the end portion is joined to the top of the body portion.
The external appearance of the drum illustrated in the drawings, i.e. as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is quite conventional. The drum is a heavy duty 45 gallon drum having a steel body portion 10 and end portions 11 and 12, each secured at a respective end of the body portion 10 by a double seam 14 as seen in Fig. 3. The body portion 10 is made from 18 gauge (Birmingham gauge) sheet steel and is strengthened by reinforcing circumferential ribs 15.
The end portions are formed from 16 gauge sheet steel and are dished so that they lie within and are protected by the end flanges 20 formed by the double seam, the bottom end portion 12 having a featureless external surface while the top end portion 11, shown in Fig. 2, is provided with the conventional raised areas 19 and 20 in which are provided pour and vent openings closed by threaded plugs.
Each end portion has secured to the inside surface thereof by welding a reinforcing disc 25 of 16 gauge sheet steel, the diameter of the disc being only nominally less than that of the inside of the body portion 10. Effectively the disc 25 extends to the start of the curve between the radial and axial areas 27 and 28 of the end portion. It should be noted that while the disc 25 on the bottom end portion extends over the whole area of the interior of the end portion, the disc 25 on the top end portion being pierced to accommodate the pour and vent filling. In a modification the top end portion has cutout areas located beneath the pour and vent openings. The effect of the discs 25 is to increase, in this embodiment double, the thickness of the end portions in the areas covered by the discs.
