Abstract

In order to locate centres for drilling or cutting through walls or bulkheads, a target 1 is affixed in the desired position on one side of a wall or bulkhead 6. The opposite side of the wall is then searched relative to a rough approximation of the target position with hand held unit 4. When the centre is located this will be indicated by unit 4. Hole 7 is for marking purposes. Unit 4 may transmit sonic waves or it may rely on the target affecting a tuned circuit in a predetermined manner. L.E.D.s 5 indicate to an operator the correct position of target 1. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Position locator This invention relates to a device for making exact locations between non communitive spaces.
The normal method of fixing an exact location between non communitive spaces is by taking successive measurements relative to some reference points. This is a time consuming practice and is not always sufficiently accurate.
The present invention sets out to dispense with the need to take relative measurements.
The locator is provided with a transmitter/ receiver and a target. The transmitter unit emits an electrical signal of a given waveform and frequency, which when brought into the proximity of the target reflects the signal back into the receiver. The signal is then processed for horizontal/vertical components, the results of which are outputted to 4 light emitting diodes (L.E.D's), these will in turn indicate to the operator the relative direction of the target. When the transmitter is in perfect axial alignment with the target the 4 L.E.D's will light in unison. The position can then be marked on the surface in readiness for drilling or cutting.
The device will now be described with reference to Fig. 1.
The target 1 is fixed in the desired position by a suction cup 2, or by pinning through eyelet 3. The transmitter unit 4 is then introduced into the general area of the target 1, the L.E.D's 5will then indicate to the operator the correct position of the target 1 through the solid material 6. Hole 7 is for making purposes. On/off switch 8.
CLAiMS
1. An electronic position locating device employing transmitted waves where there is no physical communication through a solid i.e. brick-work, concrete, steel etc.
2. As in claim 1. where the transmitted wave may be sonic married to a suitably adapted target.
3. Where the type of transmitted signal may be part of a tuned circuit, the target affecting the tune in a predetermined manner.
4. As in claim 3. L.E.D's may be substituted for a pulsing audible device.
