Description
SPECIFICATION
Liquid dispenser
This invention is concerned with liquid dispensers as commonly used for example in bars, cafes or the like to dispense an accurate measure of spirits, wine or other beverages from the bottle or other bulk.
More specifically the invention applies to the type of liquid dispenser having a reservoir whose capacity determines the relevant measure and which refills automatically by gravity, the dispenser being mounted in use to connect with the neck of an inverted bottle or with some other bulk container and being provided with resiliently loaded plunger means which is displaced upwardly by the user when a measure is to be dispensed into a drinking glass or other receptacle, and this type of dispenser is hereinafter referred to as a "plungertype liquid dispenser".
One example of a plunger-type liquid dispenser as used for spirits is known by the trade mark or trade name "OPTIC". Another example is described in our co-pending British patent application 8333211 being a larger capacity measure particularly for dispensing wine by the glass.
Most known plunger-type liquid dispensers are made up of a substantial number of individual components which add to manufacturing costs, involve considerable manual assembly work, and make leakage or unauthorised tampering difficult to prevent. In particular these known dispensers have reservoirs which are releasably attached to head formations (which enclose the top of the reservoir) by means of a sealing washer or gasket and an internally threaded ring to clamp the reservoir against the head formation.
The object of the invention is to provide a plunger type liquid dispenser which is economical to produce, durable and reliable in use and which provides improved security against tampering.
According to the invention there is provided a plunger-type liquid dispenser including a reservoir formation defining a measuring chamber of accurately predetermined capacity, a head formation mated with the top of the reservoir formation in use and defining an inlet duct for feed of liquid to the chamber, and a plunger assembly located in an operatively lower foot opening of the reservoir formation wherein the body and head formations are bonded together to form an integral assembly.
Conveniently said formations are formed of plastics, for example the reservoir formation may be a rigid transparent moulding of geneal purpose polystyrene and the head formation may be a rigid moulding of high impact polystyrene or A.B.S.
(Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) these plastics being weld compatible as referred to below.
While the bonding may be effected by various methods including use of adhesives or solvents, or heat welding it is preferred to bond the formations by ultrasonic welding, the two formations being formed of plastics materials, for example those referred to above, which are weld compatible in the sense that they will readily form a secure welded bond.
The dispenser may further include a top plate, for example a metal diecasting, on which the head formation is mounted and which is in turn mounted by means of a bracket, clamp or the like to secure the dispenser at its position of use. Preferably the head formation is secured to the top plate so that it is not readily detachable therefrom.
The invention may be applied to the large capacity dispensers described in our said co-pending
British patent application 8333211 or to other patterns and capacities of dispenser.
An example of the invention is now more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a sectional and part exploded view of a liquid dispenser with some parts omitted for clarity and
Figure 2 is a detail of a weld joint of the assembly.
A plunger-type liquid dispenser, e.g. for measures of spirits, has a reservoir 10 moulded from rigid transparent polystyrene. The reservoir may be various shapes depending on the application of the dipenser and the cubic capacity of each measure, in this example it is generally conical converging downwardly to a foot formation 11 defining a central opening 12. The latter receives a plunger assembly 13 (part only shown in broken lines) of known construction, an external ferrule 14 of the latter being mounted on foot formation 11. The valve mechanism of plunger assembly 13 has been omitted for calrity.
Reservoir 10 has an open top prior to assembly including an upstanding cylindrical rim 15 of greater internal diameter than the maximum top diameter of the conical reservoir interior, the latter terminating at a radial seating 16.
A head formation 20 is a rigid moulding of high impact polystyrene or A.B.S. and includes a central hollow spigot 21 projecting upwardly and which is connected in use to the neck of an inverted brittle or other bulk container of the liquid to be dispensed in measured quantities, the latter being fed through spigot 21 into reservoir 10 under the control of the plunger valve mechanism in known manner.
A cylindrical register portion 22 of formation 20 is sized to fit within rim 15 of reservoir 10 and, on assembly, is permanently bonded thereto to form a fluid tight joint, preferably by an ultrasonic welding process which lends itself to speedy production and the formation of a reliable bond.
To facilitate this the components are shaped as shown in the detail of Figure 2 in that rim 15 is provided with a small internal step 23 immediately adjacent seating 16 having a chamferred top face and an internal diameter which is an interference fit relative to the external diameter of register portion 22. This provides an interface at which the energy of the welding process will be concentrated as the components are pressed axially together so forming an effective bond bewteen them as register portion 22 is pressed home to abut seating 16.
It will be appreciated that various shapes of mating profiles could be provided for sonic welding or other bonding, for example instead of reservoir 10 being shaped to provide a female profile as in the above example in which a male profile of the head formation is received, the latter could have the female profile and the reservoir be provided with a male profile.
The bonding could alternatively be effected by use of adhesives or solvents or by heat welding or other bonding porcess.
In this way head formation 20 is permanently attached to reservoir 10 so determining the effective volume of the reservoir chamber to close tolerances, dispensing with the need for gaskets or sealing washers at the joint between the head formation and the reservoir, and also considerably simplifying the construction because that no screwthreading is required and the use of a threaded ring or the like for clamping the components together is dispensed with.
Under British Trading Standards laws as administered by the Department of Trade and Industry it is a requirement that the reservoir chamber be sealed against unauthorised tampering if the dispenser is to be used in trade. With known constructions of dispenser such sealing is effected providing aligned apertures through the reservoir top, head formation, and its mounting plate to receive a filament which also encircles the threaded clamping ring and which is secured by a Government stamped seal. This arrangement is not wholly satisfatory as the seals can be tampered with or dispensers can be dismantled and purportedly reconiditioned, possibly not to satisfactory standards, for re-sealing by the authorities. The construction described above precludes such undetected tampering and it may be possible to thus dispense with the need for actual sealing and, instead, to have the reservoir itself stamped to show it satisfies the required standards.
To complete the assembly, head formation 20 is attached to a top plate 30 (part only shown) which is typically a die cast metal component which serves as a mounting for the dispenser, being attached in use to a bracket, clamp or other supporting member for mounting the dispenser and, commonly, the bottle feeding it, on a wall or other surface, bar shelf or the like. Formation 20 may be attached to plate 30 by screws in known manner but it is preferred that more permanent mounting is used to simplify assembly and again deter unauthorised tampering. As the invention enables the head formation and reservoir to be permanently bonded without any possibility of leakage there is no need for these components to be disturbed or dismantled, thus it is practical to permanently attach the top plate 30 and various methods of doing this may be employed. For exaple plate 30 may be provided with downwardly depending integral studs which pass through radially outwardly directed flange portions of formation 20 e,g, extending into the corners of a square hollow box section plate 30, the lower ends of these studs being peened to form rivets attaching the two components together. Another possibility is to provide mating profiles on the components such as bayonet formations for semi-permanent attachment which could be reinforced by one or more screws or rivets.
