Abstract

A reversible garment (e.g. trousers) has an opening closed by a zip fastener with a slider (40) and covered by a fly. Fig 5 is a cross-sectional view. Seen from side (B) the fly is a fabric flap (6) attached where one zip tape (18) is secured, the flap extending so as to cover both halves of the zip fastener (18 and 19) whilst the second tape (19) of the fastener is not otherwise fully covered by other fabric on that face (B). The second zip tape (19) is secured to a facing piece (28) which joins the two pieces of fabric (12, 14) constituting the body of the garment. Seen from the other face (A) there appears a conventional fly front (36) provided by a short extension of the fabric (14) which does not overlap the fabric on the other side of the zip. Thus the fly opens in the same manner, i.e. to the left- or right-hand side (female/male), on each face of the garment even when it is reversed. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Reversible garments This invention relates to reversible garments having a zip opening.
It is customary for trousers, skirts and the like to have a slit-like opening beneath the waistband, the opening being closable by a zip fastener (a "zip"and the zip being concealed by fabric forming a "fly" opening. It is customary to have the fly opening reversed for male garments vis-a-vis female garments.
Trousers and the like may be made reversible, having fabric of a different appearance on the two faces. The problem then arises of making the fly opening of the same nature (male or female) on each face. We have devised a fly construction which solves this problem.
According to the invention we provide a reversible garment having an opening closed by a zip fastener and covered by a fly, the fly opening in the same manner on both faces of the garment, e.g. if the fly has its opening to the right hand side (male side) on one face of the garment, then the reversed fly will also open to the right-hand side.
The preferred manner in which this fly is constructed is to sew (or otherwise secure) on one face of the fly a flap which is attached, usually between two pieces of the fabric of the garment where one tape of the zip fastener is sewn in, the flap extending so as to cover both halves of the fastener so that this flap finishes beyond the centre line of the fly, whilst the other half of the fastener is not fully covered by fabric on that face of the garment; on the other face of the garment the zip is covered by a flap which appears as a normal fly front, just covering both halves of the zip, and the edge of the flap and being in the centre line of the garment in the case of trousers.
The invention will be further described with reference to the preferred embodiment shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a front view of a front face of the upper part of trousers incorporating the invention; Figure 2 is a front view as in Figure 1 but of the other face of the trousers (i.e. reversed inside out from Figure 1); Figure 3 is a view of the opened fly opening of the trousers as in Figure 1, without the waistband; Figure 4 is a view as in Figure 3, but from the other face; and Figure 5 is a cross-section of the fly opening on line X-X as in Figure 1 or 2.
Referring to Figure 1, there is seen a normal type of fly opening centrally at 2; the fly is attached by stitching 4, which may be made a design feature if desired. In Figure 2, on the reverse face, the fly opening again opens to the right as viewed, but it extends from the zip in a flap 6 away from the centre of the garment. The bottom of the flap 6 may be of a squarer shape if desired.
The construction of the fly is seen from Figures 3 to 5 and will be described with reference thereto.
The garment is made of two types of fabric, 12, 14, having different colours or other appearances (at areas away from the zip the two layers could be fused together or a single fabric used which is of different appearance on its two sides). The zip fastener 16 is of the usual type, having two zip tapes 18, 19 and a slider 22. Looking at the face seen in Figures 1 and 3, one zip tape 18 is sewn at 20 between the two fabrics 12, 14 which do not overlap the zip teeth. On the other half of the fly the tape 19 is not directly fixed to the fabrics 12, 14 but is sewn at 26 to a facing piece 28 one end of which is sewn at 30 to fabric 12 and the other end sewn at 32 to fabric 14.From this view, from A in Figure 5, or as seen in Figure 1, the zip is covered by a fly front 36 of normal appearance; the fly front 36 is preferably self-faced by a strip of material 38 (of the same appearance as fabric 14).
Considering now the other face, viewed from B in Figure 5, or as seen in Figure 2, the junction 30 of the materials 12, 28 stops short of the zip teeth 40; the zip is on this side covered by a flap 42 of fabric of the type 12; this flap extends as shown in Figure 2 or 4 and is sewn in at 20 with the zip tape 18. The top of the flap is held down by a button 44 or other fastener.
The bottom of flap 6 could, if of a squarer shape, be also held down if necessary by a fastening.
1. A reversible garment having an opening closed by a zip fastener and covered by a fly, the fly opening in the same manner, i.e. to the lefthand side or right-hand side, on each face of the garment.
2. A garment as claimed in Claim 1, which includes secured on one face of the fly a fabric flap which is attached where one zip tape is secured, the flap extending so as to cover both halves of the fastener whilst the other half of the fastener is not fully covered by fabric on that face of the garment.
3. A garment as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein the other of the two zip tapes is secured to a facing piece which joins the two pieces of fabric constituting the body of the garment.
4. A reversible garment substantially as shown in the accompanying drawings.
