Abstract

A bracket 14 for use in forming a horse show jump or a high jump used in athletics embodies a pair of spaced parallel sides 15 and 16 which are interconnected intermediate their ends by a bridge portion 22, said bracket supporting a cradle member 23 on which in use one end of a crossbar can rest. Each of said sides 15 and 16 is formed with a slot or recess 17 or 18 which has an open lower end, and a pin 19 cooperates with the slots to support the bracket 14 in a desired vertical position on an upright member 11 in which a row of vertical holes 13 is formed. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Device for use informing a horse show jump or a high jump used in athletics This invention relates to a device for use in forming a horse show jump or a high jump used in athletics.
Thus, a horse show jump is a well known device for presenting to the horse an obstacle which is to be jumped. A simple form consists essentially of two upright members, a crossbar, and a pair of socalled "cups" or brackets. A cup consists of a device carrying at one end a support shaped to allow one end of the crossbar to rest in it and at the other end means such as a pair of flanges which can be located one on either side of an upright member of the jump which is commonly of square or rectangular section and in which is formed a vertical row of spaced holes. The cup is set by hand to any desired height on the stand by a pin passing loosely through a hole in one flange of the cup, through any desired hole in the upright member, and through an aligned hole in the other flange of the cup.
In the normal design of cup, however, some difficulty may be experienced in making the required height adjustment because the two flanges of the cup in use conceal the ends of the required hole in the upright member, which hole must therefore be located by feel or guesswork. The object of the present invention is to provide an improved form of "cup" which will avoid this difficulty.
According to the present invention there is provided a device for use in forming a hores show jump or a high jump used in athletics, said device comprising a bracket having a pair of spaced parallel sides adapted in use to embrace an upright member in which is formed a vertical row of spaced holes, said sides being interconnected intermediate their ends by a bridge portion which is adapted in use to engage one face of said upright member each of said sides being formed with a slot or recess which extends upwardly from its lower edge so as to have an open lower end and a closed end and an abutment edge which faces said bridge portion the two slots or recesses thus formed in said sides being aligned with each other, said bracket also supporting a cradle member on which in use one end of a crossbar can rest, there being also provided a pin which is adapted to support the bracket in a desired vertical position on the upright member, said pin then extending through one of said slots or recesses one of the aforesaid vertical row of holes in the upright member, and the other slot or recess.
The invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure lisa perspective view showing part of a horse show jump or an athletics high jump incorporating one example of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention, and Figure 2 is a perspective view, on a larger scale, showing said device in more detail.
Referring firstly to figure 1,there is shown therein a horse show jump (or an athletics high jump) which is formed essentially by two upright members 10 and 11 and a crossbar shown by chain-dotted lines 12. Each of said upright members has a vertical row of spaced holes 13 which each extend in a horizontal direction generally parallel to the line of approach of a horse or athlete to the jump.
Each of said upright members supports a "cup" or bracket 14 and the two brackets thus provided are of similar construction which is shown in more detail in Figure 2.
Thus each bracket 14 includes a pair of spaced parallel sides 15 and 16 in which are cut slots or recesses 17 and 18, each slot or recess extending upwardly from the lower edge of the associated flange so as to have an open lower end and a closed upper end.
As shown, each of said slots or recesses is of parallel-sided configuration but in an alternative embodiment they may be of V-shaped configuration and such an arrangement requires very little accuracy to engage a cross pin 19 which is conveniently rendered "captive" relative to the bracket by means of a length of chain 20 (or cable), said pin 19 being stored when not in use by engaging it in a pair of aligned holes formed in said sides 15 and 16 at positions remote from the slots or recesses 17 and 18.
Conveniently, said bracket is formed from a strip or plate which is bent to form the spaced sides 15 and 16 which are integrally connected by a bridge portion 21. Another, separately formed, bridge portion 22 is also provided and interconnects the sides intermediate their ends, said bridge portion 22 being arranged in use to engage the inner face of a co-acting upright member 10 or 11.
Each bracket is compieted by a cradle member 23 which is formed from a short length of bar bent to a shallow curve or any other desired configuration and firmly secured (as by means of welding) to the bracket, concave side upwards, at that end thereof opposite to said slots or recesses 17 and 18.
In use, to alter the height of the jump the pin 19 is withdrawn from the hole in the upright member it occupies thereby releasing the associated cup or bracket and is reinserted into any other desired hole.
The bracket is then raised above the pin and lowered down onto it is such a way that the two sides 15 and 16 engage with the pin 19, said sides 15 and 16 being disposed respectively on opposite side faces of the upright member and the bridge portion 22 engaging or lying closely adjacent to the inner face of the upright member. In this way the bracket is supported on the upright by the pin 19 at the desired height, it being understood that the outer verical edge of each slot or recess 17 and 18 (i.e. that edge which faces the bridge portion 22) will act as an abutment edge which, by engagement with the co-acting pin 19, will locate the bracketto prevent any movement in a horizontal inward direction. The bridge portion 22 will of course prevent movement of the bracket in a horizontal outward direction (and also any pivotal movement about the pin 19) whereas the upper edges of the two slots or recesses 17 and 18 will prevent any downward movement of the bracket.
The height of the bracket on the opposite side of the jump is adjusted in a similar manner and the crossbar 12 is then laid across the two cradle members 23 so as to be supported by them.
In an alternative construction, the two sides 15 and 16 are formed separately from each other and are connected to each other adjacent to one pair of ends by the cradle member itself, said sides still being connected together intermediate their ends by a bridge portion such as the bridge portion 22 in the above-described embodiment.
