Abstract

There is disclosed an identity device 10 such as to identify a meter reader or for use as a credit card, for example, and which remains operative for its intended purpose for predetermined time period after which it becomes inoperative. The device includes, for example, means which can be acted upon with a coded signal, applied through contacts 12, to bring it to the operative state in which an L.C.D. panel 11 displays a 'cord-valid' indication for a predetermined time period after which the L.C.D. gives a 'cord-invalid' indication until a further coded signal is applied to restore the operative condition. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Identity device This invention concerns an identity device usually, but not necessarily, in the form of a card which identifies an authorised holder to enable him to perform some function.
Known devices include those be provided with a magnetic strip which is pre-recorded with data which can be scanned by a reading device to permit the holder entry to a car park or a security area of a building, for example. In a more sophisticated arrangement the scanned information must properly code with further data keyed in by the user at the reading device as is common with cards for use with bank cash-dispensing machines, for example.
Other known devices carry a photograph or signature of the authorised holder as is common with cards to identify bona fide household meter readers or with credit cards respectively, for example.
Loss or theft of such identity devices is always a problem. For example, the holder of a stolen credit card can soon learn to make a passable copy of the signature thereon enabling fraudulent use of the card.
Users of bank cash cards often carry their personal number, despite the exhortations of the issuing bank, in a manner readily ascertained by a thief, again enabling fraudulent use.
It is an object of the present invention to provide identity devices which overcome, at least to some extent the disadvantages arising from loss or theft of known devices.
According to the present invention there is provided an identity device which becomes from an operative state inoperative for its intended purpose after lapse of a predetermined time interval and including means which can be acted upon to restore said operative state.
The means may be acted upon after lapse of said predetermined time interval.
The means may be acted upon before expiry of said predetermined time interval to extend the operative state to a period equal to said time interval.
The device may become inoperative in various ways. It may, for example, become modified so as to prevent the scanning of pre-recorded data thereon or it may incorporate visual means which become activated to indicate invalidity.
Again the device may be reactivated by various means such as receipt of a coded pulse train, unique frequency signal and so on.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description, with reference to the figures of the accompanying drawing, which show, by way of example only, two forms of identity device embodying the invention.
Of the drawing: Figure 1 shows an identity card for use by a household meter reader; Figure 2 shows an identity card for use in obtaining credit; and Figure 3 shows an identity card for obtaining access to a secure area.
Referring firstly to Figure 1, it will be seen that the identity card 10 incorporates a window 11 comprised by a liquid crystal display adapted to indicate either the word "VALID" or, by the activation of initial letters, the word "INVALID". The card incorporates a microprocessor which ensures that the window 11 displays the word "VALID" for a continuous period of twenty-four hours from receipt by the micro processor of a coded pulse signal which can be injected via electrical contacts 12 by engagement of the card 10 with a control unit.
The card 10 is adapted to be carried by a household meter reader such as an electricity meter reader who will engage his card with the control unit at his place of work each morning before commencing his round. The card 10 incorporates a photograph 13 of the meter reader to whom it has been issued and a legend inviting the householder to refuse entry to the meter reader and telephone the police in the event that the window 11 displays the word "INVALID". It will be understood that if the card 10 should be lost or stolen it will not be reactivated after the expiry of the current time period and will effectively become worthless.
Referring now to Figure 2, it will be seen that an identity card 20 adapted for use as a credit card contains the usual embossed indicia 21 of name, account number and expiry date, a panel 22 for the signature of the card holder and, as before, a window 23 comprised by a liquid crystal display adapted to indicate the word "VALID" or "IN VALID".
Again the card 20 incorporates a microprocessor which holds the display reading "VALID" for a period enabling a transacation to be completed after a personal code number known only to the card holder is keyed in by the holder on a miniature keypad 24 provided on the front face of the card 20.
It will immediately be understood that should the card 20 be lost or stolen it will be worthless as the display will then indicate that the card is invalid, the finder or thief being unaware of the correct code number required to alter the display.
Referring finally to Figure 3, it will be seen that the identity card 30 has on one end a plurality of electrical contacts 31 which are interconnected in accordance with a certain sequence within a microprocessor included within the card and which is adapted to alter the sequence after a pre-determined period from having received a reactivating tone through a small microphone 32 incorporated on the front face of the card.
The card can be used by engagement with an appropriate reading device to gain access to a secure area of a building and it will be understood that if the card is lost it will become worthless for this purpose at the expiry of the preset period when the sequence in which the contacts 31 are connected changes, the presumption being that only the authorised holder will have access to means for reactivating the card by injecting the proper tone through the microphone 32.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof as defined by the

Claims (12)

appended claims. Thus, cards such as that described with reference to Figure 3 could be unique to a given employee, forming part of a clocking-on and clockingoff system, the clocking machine serving to reactivate the card on withdrawal from the machine each evening. Again, for example, the devices may be capable of reactivation by any other suitable direct contact or remote means icluding amplitude modulated, frequency modulated or pulse coded radiated or injected signals from any suitable part of the electo-magnetic or acoustic spectra.
