Abstract

A container particularly for particulate food products has a cylindrical wall (10), a base, an upper mouth bounded by a protective metal ring (12) and a lid (14) which snap-fits against a circumferential bead (26) around the inner periphery of the ring. The ring (12) has an inner limb (21) which is curved downwardly away from the top of the ring towards the centre of the container to define the bead (26). The end (28) of this inner limb is curved back towards the wall (10). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Containers This invention relates to a container, and particularly although not exclusively to a container for powdered or particulate food products.
One design of container is shown in British Patent Application 2059400A. This arrangement has the disadvantage that lodgement of food particles can occur in an upwardly-open crevice in a protective ring which fits over the open end of the container. An aim of the present invention is to provide a container which is improved from the points of view of hygiene and can be readily opened.
According to one aspect of the invention therefore there is provided a container having a substantially cylindrical wall with a top end having a substantially circular periphery thereto and a bottom end which is closed with a base, and a protective ring fitted around said top end periphery which ring is generally of inverted U-shape in cross-section and has outer and inner limbs extending downwardly respectively alongside the outer and inner sides of the said wall at said periphery, the inner limb defining a circumferential bead within which a lid can be snap-fitted, characterised in that the inner limb is curved or bent from its upper extremity generally inwardly away from the periphery towards the central axis of the container and downwardly towards the said base to define a shaped surface of said bead for engagement with said lid.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a container for powdered granular or particulate materials having a base and a substantially cylindrical wall whose upper edge defines a substantially circular mouth, a rolled sheet metal protective ring covering said edge, and a closure shaped and dimensioned to be snap-fitted into the aperture defined by the ring, in which the ring is made up of a first portion which is substantially an inverted U-shape as seen in radial cross-section integral with and connected to a second portion which is substantially Ushaped in said cross-section and has a first limb extending substantially horizontally inwards the axis of the wall joined by a round portion to a second limb extending substantially horizontally or downwardly and outwardly towards the wail.
In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention, the closure is of dished form and has an annular lifting flange extending inwardly from an upper external edge portion of the closure.
Among the advantages of a container according to the invention is that the form of the protective ring is less likely than prior art designs to exhibit crevices and so is less likely to harbour dirt or particles of the contents; in a case where such particles may become rancid this is an important advantage. Another advantage is that the sharp edge of the protective ring is well concealed, and so injury to a user of a container is unlikely.
The radius of the aforesaid round portion can readily be altered without affecting most other dimensions of the protective ring. Consequently it is possible to design for larger or smaller areas of contact between the said round portion and the closure without involving a complete redesign of the protective ring.
The invention will be better understood from the following non-limiting description of an example thereof given with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the single figure is a perspective view, partly cut away, of one example of a container according to the invention.
The illustrated container has a cylindrical wall 10, e.g. of wound carboard, the top edge of which defines a mouth and is protected and strengthened by a rolled sheet metal protective ring 1 2. A closuure 14 which may be of synthetic plastics material fits into the ring 12.
The shape of the protective ring 1 2 may best be seen in cross-sectional view at the left of the drawing and it has this cross-section all around the mouth. The ring as seen in crosssection has a first U-shaped position 1 6 one limb 1 8 of which has an inturned flange 20, and the other limb 21 of which connects to an upper limb 22 of a second U-shaped portion 24. The upper limb 22 is joined by a rounded portion 26 to a second limb 28 which extends substantially horizontally towards the wall 10 and whose exposed end 30 is arranged to contact or dig into the inner surface of the wall 1 0. It will be seen that the portion 1 6 is substantially an inverted Ushape and the second portion 24 is substan tiaily the shape of a U lying upon its side.The function of the rounded portion 26 is to cooperate with the closure 1 4.
The illustrated closure 14 is dish-shaped and has an external flange 34, an internal annular flange 36, a sloping wall portion 38, a substantially vertical wall portion 40, and a flat portion 42. On the external surface of the wall portion 40 are located parallel peripheral beads or ribs 44, one just above and one just below the rounded portion 26, when the closure 14 is in its closed position.The dimensions of the parts are so chosen that the diameter of the mouth orifice measured from the innermost surface of the rounded portion 26 is equal to or slightly less than the outside diameter of the vertical wall portion 40, and that the outside diameter of the ribs 44 is greater than the inside diameter of the rounded portion 26 by an amount such that a snap fit occurs in use between the ring 1 2 and the closure 1 4. The closure 1 4 is preferably made of a slightly resilient plastics ma terial so that the lower rib 44 can be deformed when the closure is pushed into the mouth of the container. The flange 36 is located so that a user can tuck the tips of his fingers under it in order to get a good grip to pull off the closure.Provision of an annular flange 36 has the advantage that the user does not have to juggle with the container to get it into one predetermined orientation before attempting to open it by pulling off the closure 14.
The second limb 28 has been described above as being located to extend substantially horizontal. Althernatively it may extend outwardly and downwardly, for example, at an angle of about 45 to 50, to the horizontal.
A particular advantage of the smooth continuous wall of the protective ring 1 2 formed by the limb 21 and the limb 22 is that it offers no break or crevice wherein dirt or particles can lodge, and it can be made to have a smooth shiny surface which is hygienic and easy to keep clean. Moreover, the smooth shiny surface so obtained is visible looking into the mouth of the container and so a customer is able to assure himself or herself by visual inspection that the design of the mouth ring is hygienic and fully in accordance with official regulations governing the sales of food products.

Claims (4)

1. A container having a substantially cylindrical wall with a top end having a substantially circular periphery thereto and a bottom end which is closed with a base, and a protective ring fitted around said top end periphery which ring is generally of inverted U-shape in cross-section and has outer and inner limbs extending downwardly respectively alongside the outer and inner sides of the said wall at said periphery, the inner limb defining a circumferential bead within which a lid can be snap-fitted, characterised in that the inner limb is curved or bent from its upper extremity generally inwardly away from the periphery towards the central axis of the container and downwardly towards the said base to define a shaped surface of said bead for engagement with said lid.
2. A container for powdered granular or particulate materials having a base and a substantially cylindrical wall whose upper edge defines a substantially circular mouth, a rolled sheet metal protective ring covering said edge, and a closure shaped and dimensioned to be snap-fitted into the aperture defined by the ring, in which the ring is made up of a first portion which is substantially an inverted U-shape as seen in radial cross-section integral with and connected to a second portion which is substantially U-shaped in said cross-section and has a first limb extending substantially horizontally inwards towards the axis of the wall joined by a round portion to a second limb extending substantially horizontally or downwardly and outwardly towards the wall.
3. A container according to claim 2, wherein the said closure is of dished form and has an annular lifting flange extending inwardly from an upper external edge portion of the closure.
4. A container substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
