Description

1 GB 2 151 546A
SPECIFICATION
Armoured panel The invention relates to a panel, which is armoured or reinforced by a plastics film, which is fastened to the surface of the panel.
Panels of this type are known per se, for example from French Patent Specification
2,457,956. According to this Patent Specificatian, large-area glass panels, in high-rise buildings, are covered by a thin plastics film, to guard against the crashing-down of portions of the panel in the event of the glass panel being damaged for any reason, or even being destroyed.
Nowadays, the continuous increase in lawlessness and public disturbances is resulting in panels of this type being used to an increas- ing extent on office buildings and governmental installations; panels thus armoured or reinforced being located, for the most part, on the door- frames and window-frames situated on the street side. A transparent polyester film is used as the plastics film.
Although good results have already been achieved by armouring a glass pane with a plastics film, for example with a transparent polyester film, based on polyethylene tere- phthalate, and having a thickness of 0.1 mm, there exists, in practice a need for still better means of protection, because experience has shown that a glass pane armoured with only one film is incapable of withstanding repeated heavy blaws, for example with a heavy stone or a hammer.
The purpose of the invention is to further improve the reinforcement or armouring of the panel, without appreciably influencing its original external appearance and, especially in 105 the cases involving a glass panel, without impairing its transparency.
This is achieved, according to the invention, when a second armouring element, composed of thin plastics wires, is applied to the panel. This armouring element is preferably manufactured from a transparent plastics.
An armouring element of this type can be manufactured extremely inexpensively by modern production techniques, and should thus increase the total cost of the reinforcement by only an unimportant amount, while, on the other hand, effecting a considerable reinforcement of the panel. Even under blows from a heavy object, which shatter the glass and finally destroy the plastics film, the wires remain intact, prevent further damage to the film, and act as a barrier against entry to the room which is protected by the panel.
This secand armouring element is preferably provided between the panel and the plastics film; in addition, the armouring element can even be applied, retrospectively, to a panel which is already furnished with a plastics film.
The invention can be used with advantage in the case of a panel which has yet to be armoured, an armouring film being used, which is provided with a layer of adhesive, previously applied thereon, with plastic wires for the second armouring element intercalated therewith, this complete unit then being attached ta the panel which is to be armoured.
The armouring wires can be composed of Keviar, which is very strong, or of another plastics which is suitable for this purpose, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide, polyacetate, or polyphenyl oxide.
The second armouring element can be designed in the form of separate wires, or also in the form of a meshwork, or net, made of wires which are attached one to another at the nodes.
The claimed exclusive rights also include an armouring or reinforcing film, composed of plastics and provided with a layer of adhesive, thin plastic armouring- wires being embedded in the layer of adhesive, or even being contained within the film material, as well as for a panel which is provided with a plastics film, and with an armouring element which is manufactured from plastics wires. The wires are preferably located between the panel and the film, or are intercalated with the film material.
It is observed that German Auslegeschrift 1,496,507 describes a windscreen for motor vehicles comprising a relatively thick plastics panel, which is provided, on one side, with a hard layer, and which carries, on the other side, a thin glass panel, an armouring element composed of plastics wires being located between the glass panel and the plastics panel.
Furthermore, from French Patent Specification 2,279,544 is known a darkcolored and, therefore, heat-absorbing glass panel, being provided, on one side, with an armouring mesh which is embedded in a layer of cured plastics.
The invention is explained by reference to the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a section through an armouring film according to the invention; Figure 2 shows, diagrammatically, a panel with the armouring film which is to be attached thereon; Figure 3 shows, on a greatly enlarged scale, the individual parts in the assembled state; Figure 4 shows, diagrammatically, a panel with a separate armouring element, which is to be attached thereon, and a reinforcing film, this armouring element being manufactured from plastics wires; Figure 5 shows the parts illustrated in Figure 4, in the assembled state.. and Figure 6 shows a section through a unit in which the armouring threads are not located in the layer of adhesive but on the other side of the armouring film.
In Figure 1, a transparent armouring film is denoted 1, this film preferably being made of a polyester film based on polyethylene tere- 2 GB 2 151 546A 2 phtahalate, and having a thickness of 0.1 mm. The film is provided, on the rear side, with a layer 2 af adhesive, this layer being masked by a protective film 3, which is remaved before the armouring film is attached; thereafter the armouring film is applied to the panel which is to be reinforced. The adhesive 2 then cures, and after a predetermined time, which depends on the nature of the adhesive, the film is inseparably bonded to the panel which is to be armoured.
According to the invention a second armouring element 4 is located in the layer 2 of adhesive, this armouring element 4 being compased of thin plastics wires. These wires are preferably made from a transparent plastics-either Keviarl'or polyethylene, polypropylene, or a polyacetate. The armouring element 4 can be designed in the form of individual wires, or as a net or meshwork, made of wires of this type; these wires can be manufactured in any known way, for example by extrusion. The presence of this second armouring element is hardly noticeable.
In Fig. 2,a wall of a building is denoted 5; this wall is provided with a glass pane 6, on this pane is applied the film 1, witb the second armouring element 4, in a known way, after having first pulled off the protective film 3 and having thoroughly cleaned the glass pane 6. Afterwards the adhesive 2 cures as customary.
The unit, obtained in this way is shown in section, diagrammatically and on a greatly enlarged scale, in Fig. 3.
The various parts of a second embodiment of the invention are shown in Figure 4; these parts are for the sake of clarity, shown at a distance one from another. In this case, the wall 11 of the building is provided with a glass pane 12. An armouring net, or armour ing meshwork 13, manufactured from plastics with the rectangular meshes 14 (other mesh shapes are also possible) is located in front of the inner surface of the glass pane 12. The 110 net or meshwork can be manufactured from a transparent plastics for example polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide, polyacetate, or po lyphenyl oxide.
The net or meshwork 13 is located between 115 the panel 12 and the transparent reinforcing film 15, known per se, for example, a poly ester film based on polyethylene terephtha late, with a thickness of 1.0 mm. This film is attached, in a known manner, with the aid of 120 a suitable adhesive. The armouring net or armouring meshwork 13 is first suspended in front of the glass panel, after which the film 15 is glued over the net or meshwork. The film 15 adheres to the glass pane 12 in the open spaces between the meshes 14 of the net or meshwork 13.
Figure 5 shows a section through the unit formed by this means; for the sake of clarity the film 15 is not shown as being in contact 130 with the glass pane 12 in the meshes 14 of the net or meshwark 13.
The separate armouring net or armouring meshwork can be manufactured in a known manner, for example by extrusion, and its presence is hardly noticeable. The mesh-width must be selected according to the strength desired. A high strength is achieved even in the case of comparatively wide meshes, e.g.
10 X 10cm.
The panel according to the invention has a considerably higher resistance to damage and destruction, and is scarcely more expensive than the panel as known per se and is ar- moured with one film only.
Figure 6 shows a glass pane 17 with an armouring film 18, which is located on the glass pane 17 by means of the layer 19 of adhesive. The thin armouring wires 20 are located on that side 21 of the film 18 directed away from the layer of adhesive, and are enclosed between this film and a thin covering layer 22, which is glued on top of the film. The use of this thin covering layer has the advantage that the material of the covering layer can adapt its shape very accurately to the plastics wires, so that, during manufacture, no air is enclosed between the film and the covering layer, and a smooth surface, with a pleasant appearance, is obtained.
