Abstract

Fragmentation of glass panels for windows etc. is inhibited by covering the inner and/or outer face of the glass with a layer of film stuck to the glass over slightly less (by 2-10 mm) than its full width. An adherent mastic of silicone rubber or similar material is applied to cover simultaneously the borders of the glass, including part of the film, and the edges of the frame supporting the glass. To prevent glass from falling into or from windows to cause secondary damage/injury in the wake of a blast or impact. Pref. the film is an adhesive coated, weather- and UV-resistant polyester film 25-200 microns thick and the mastic is an acetylated silicone rubber tinted to match the surrounding framework or building.
