Description
SPECIFICATION
Ventilation devices
This invention relates to ventilation devices.
According to the invention there is provided a ventilation device comprising a substantially flat metal flashing which, in use, serves as a roof slate, the flashing having a ventilation aperture therein, a hollow elastomeric collar having at its lower end an integral flange at which the collar is bonded to the upper surface of the flashing so that the collar bounds the ventilation aperture in the flashing, the collar having a frontal region, considered when the flashing serves as a roof slate, formed with an aperture therein, and a ventilation grill fitted to the collar by being mounted in the aperture thereof.
With the advent of efficient insulation of loft spaces particularly in domestic dwellings, it is found that because hot air is unable to escape from the living and sleeping areas upwards into the loft that there is no air movement therein, and this can result in dampness in the loft space causing mildew and mould to grow.
A ventilation device constructed in accordance with the invention provides a simple means for ventilating loft spaces and so overcome that problem.
In order that the invention may be well understood there will now be described two embodiments thereof, given by way of example, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ventilation device partly broken away;
Figure 2 is a front elevation of collar and ventilation grill of the same ventilation device:
Figure 3 is a sectioned side elevation of the same ventilation device before the ventilation grill thereof is fitted:
Figure 4 is a scrap sectioned side elevation showing the ventilation grill fitted into the collar of the ventilation device shown in Fig.
1;
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing a rain diverter and the ventilation grill of a modified ventilation device; and
Figure 6 is a scrap sectioned side elevation of the modified ventilation device shown in
Fig. 5.
In the various Figures, like parts are de- noted by like reference numerals.
The ventilation device shown in Figs. 1 to 4 comprises 3 metal flashing 1, an elastomeric collar 2 secured to the flashing, and a ventilation grill 3 fitted into the collar.
The flashing 1 is preferably an aluminium pressing, and the collar 2 a one-piece moulding of EPDM rubber. The ventilation grill 3 is preferably a one-piece PVC moulding.
The flashing 1 comprises a substantially flat base 4 which is apertured at 5. The collar 2 bounds the aperture 5 and makes an adhesional bond with the upper surface of the base 4 at an integral flange 6 of the coilar. In use, the flashing 1 would serve as a roof slate, and the rearward region 4a of the base 4 would be overlaid with upper roofing tiles with the forward base region 4b overlapping the lower tiles.
The collar 2 is hollow and generally of truncated frusto-conical section with its frontal region formed with a flat mounting surface 7 and containing a square cross-section aperture 8. The ventilation grill 3 has fixed louvres 9 bounded by a hollow square cross-section internal spigot 10 which is slightly larger in dimensions than the square aperture 8.
Thereby, the ventilation grill 3 can be fitted to the collar 2 simply hy pushing the spigot 10 into the aperture 8 whereupon, because of the resiliency of the collar material, the collar will deform as shown in Fig. 4 securely to hold the ventilation grill in position with the spigot frictionally engaged in the aperture and making a seal with the deformed collar margin 11 around the aperture.
In the modified ventilation device shown in
Figs. 5 and 6, a rain diverter 1 2 is provided to prevent driving rain from passing into the loft space. The rain diverter 1 2 is fitted inside the collar 2 upon the internal spigot 10 of the ventilation grill 3. The marginal surface of the collar 2 bounding its square aperture 8 is strengthened by a bead 1 3 which is sandwiched between the ventilation grill 3 and the rain diverter 1 2. The bead 1 3 seals against the spigot 10 which, as before, is entered as a frictional fit in the square aperture 8.A peripheral marginal portion 14 of the rain diverter 1 2 is fashioned so that it can be mounted upon the spigot 10 and be solvent cemented at 1 16 thereto to make a water tight seal with the spigot. An radially outward flange 1 5 around the rain diverter periphery 1 4 locates against the bead 1 3 so that the collar 3 is prevented from deforming inwaidly when the spigot 10 is pushed into the square aperture 8 as in the previous embodiment.
The rain diverter 1 2 is a PVC moulding.
Either of the disclosed ventilation devices would be used on roofs of 30 to 45 pitch, and the flat mounting surface 7 of the collar 2 is so inclined relative to the flashing base 4 that in use it will either extend substantially vertically or make a reverse rake and incline slightly rearwardly. The purpose of this is to so orientate the ventilation grill 3 as to inhibit the ingress of rain through its louvres 9 into the loft space.
The described and illistrated ventilation devices each thus provides a roof weathering slate carrying a grill serving to ventilate the loft space.
1. A ventilation device comprising a substantially flat metal flashing which, in use,
