Abstract
According to the invention a particulate material is provided for forming a striking surface for matches on matchboxes and other match containers. The particulate material comprises solid amorphous phosphorus containing resin particles formed by grinding a blend of amorphous phosphorus and a resin binder.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Striking composition and surface for safety matches
This invention relates to compositions for use as a striking surface which is suitable for both safety matches and strike anywhere matches, and to match boxes and other match containers, e.g. book match covers, provided with a striking surface composed of such a composition.
The striking surface provided for strike anywhere matches is usually a stripe or band of coarse abrasive particles, e.g. sand or glass, bonded by a suitable adhesive to the match container, e.g. in the case of the traditional rectangular match box, as a stripe or band of abrasive particles bonded along one or both sides of the box. The striking of a strike anywhere match on such a surface gives a characteristic rough tactile sensation both as to the 'feel' of the match during striking and to the sound of the match being struck.
The striking surface provided for a safety match and which contains a proportion of amorphous phosphorus as a reactive component, on the other hand, is customarily a much smoother, far less abrasive surface which does not give the rough feel or sound as a match is struck thereon.
The present invention seeks to provide a striking surface for safety matches, which provides a rough feel and sound as a safety match is struck thereon, and which is similar to the tactile and sound sensations that are characteristic of the sriking a strike anywhere on a striking surface of bonded sand or glass particles.
In accordance with this invention, an amorphous phosphorus-containing composition is provided for use as a striking surface for safety matches and which comprises particles of a blend of amorphous phosphorus and a resin binder preferably a thermosetting binder such as a urea-formaldehyde resin. Optionally the blend may contain other ingredients, e.g. inert fillers or abrasives, such as sand or ground glass; dispersing agents; and dyes or pigments such as titanium dioxide.
In preparing the composition of this invention the amorphous phosphorus, the binder resin, plus any necessary curing agent for use therewith, and the optional ingredients, if any, are blended together to form a homogeneous mixture which is then reduced to particle form having a size consist suitable for application to the match box or other container or enclosure member according to the conventional technique of bonding the particulate material thereto with a suitable adhesive. For example, following blending the mixture can be allowed or caused, depending on the type of binder, to set into a monolithic block of binder and amorphous phosphorus which is then ground to the desired particle size. Suitably the particulate binder/amorphous phosphorus blend provided in accordance with the invention will have a particle size in the range 50 to 500 microns, preferably 100 to 200 microns.
Atypical composition in accordance with the present invention comprises, on a dry solids basis:
amorphous phosphorus 30-80%
binder resin, preferably
a thermosetting resin 20-70%
inert filler or abrasive
optionally 0-30%
pigment or colourant
optionally 0-30%
A specific example of a composition according to the present invention and utilising a thermosetting resin comprises, on a dry solids basis.
amorphous phosphorus 42%
urea-formaldehyde resin 34%
titanium dioxide 18.3%
Unisperse Yellow 1OG-P 5.4%
Unisperse Red 3RS-P 0.3%
The above ingredients were thoroughly mixed in suspension in an aqueous medium and 0.5% nett weight of ammonium sulphate added to initiate the cure of the urea-formaldehyde resin. After curing the resultant solid mass is oven dried and ground to a size consist in the range 102 to 212 microns.
Atypical example of a composition according to the present invention and comprising a thermoplastic resin binder is a composition consisting of from 50-60% by weight amorphous phosphorus and from 40-50% by weight of a phenol-formaldehyde (Novalak) resin. In preparing such a composition the amorphous phosphorus is added to the molten binder and blended therein until a homogenous mixure is obtained. The mixture is then allowed to cool and the solid mixture ground to the desired particle size.
In yet another embodiment amorphous phosphorus-containing resin particles can be prepared using aqueous ammonium polyacrylate, or other water soluble polyacrylic or polymethacrylic acid salt, as the binder in admixture with zinc oxide. In accordance with this technique an aqueous suspension was prepared containing, on a dry solids basis:
ammonium polyacrylate 30% by weight
zinc oxide 20% by weight
amorphous phosphorus 50% by weight
The mixture was cast into a mould, dried and allowed to set into a solid block The zinc oxide cross-linked, phosphorus-containing polyacrylic acid block thus obtained was then ground to particles of the desired size (100-200 microns).
In applying the composition of this invention to match box or book match cover, this may be done by the conventional technique currently used for the application of the abrasive friction surface for strike anywhere matches; that is to say by initially laying down on the match box or book match cover a film of adhesive, e.g.
a film of urea-formaldehyde resin, and then throwing the particulate striking composition, optionally containing a curing agent for the adhesive at the adhesive film. Usually this operation will be done prior to feeding the match box outer, or the book match cover to the filling machine, but variations in this technique and other techniques for applying the particulate composition of this invention to the match box outer will be apparent to those skilled in the art. For example, the particles of resin bonded amorphous phosphorus can simply be suspended in an adhesive formulation, preferably an aqueous, solvent free, adhesive and applied to the match box outer or cover by any conventional adhesive application technique.
