Abstract

214,737. Baron, H., (Signal Ges.). Jan. 29, 1923. Testing physical qualities of materials.-The specimen to be tested is connected to an elastic member in an oscillatorv structure which oscillates at its natural frequency and the quality of the specimen is deducted from observations of its temperature. The tast piece.1 is stretched between a heavy mass 8 and a smaller mass 2 which forms the armature of an electromagnet 7. A larger mass 3 forms the field magnet and the coil is excited by an alternating current generator 14. The smaller oscillating mass 2 is connected by an elastic rod 5 to an elastic tube 6 which is connected to the mass 3. To permit the test piece to expand without flexing when heated, the heavy mass 8 is mounted on rollers or balls 9. A bag 11 of india-rubber or other nexible material encloses the test piece and contains air, water or oil, and a thermometer 16 is provided. Supply pipes 12, 13 are arranged for circulating cooling medium as required. Tests may be made at varying temperature, or at constant temperature, the results being plotted, and the required information deduced from the curve so obtained. In the first case, no flow is allowed in the container 11. and the temperatures corresponding to different amplitudes of vibration of the oscillating structure are observed. In the second case, the temperature is maintained.constant by adjusting the flow,of fluid in the container 11, and vibrations of different amplitude are set up in the oscillating structure until the test piece is ruptured. A thermoelement may be used instead'of a thermometer.
